underground eating in san diego

Zirkubu is always fun. From circus acts to humorous skits to puppetry to the often bizarre. We're biased, some friends in the group; but you will be entertained. No idea what they're serving but think we'll find out.

Quality Social

Love the way he reviews. "Condouchius say Oh, hell yeah." Too funny

San Diego Breweries

Here's a 2nd for Anvil and X!

Best Wine Store/Supplier in San Deigo?

I'm going there today to say hey to Brian and check it out.

Red Door Mission Hills

that would be Knight Salumi. Great stuff, selling like hotcakes, he's doubling the size of his curing facility.

Try his Coppa Molina. Very hot, sent me running for a cold beer, but once the frosty was in my hand, couldn't stop eating it.

Wa-fu Izakaya Maru (San Diego)

Really funny, when you google it, the first hit is your post here. I'm thinking the name may be off?

Best S.D. Meat Market for Steaks

Last time I bought steaks at Ibis (2 years ago), the prime ribeye was $17.99 and the prime porterhouse was $18.99, IIRC.

Mooncakes: where to buy?- SD

I believe I saw boxes of mooncakes at K Sandwiches in Linda Vista. Haven't tried them, so can't speak to the quality.

Best S.D. Meat Market for Steaks

A little known place for some good steaks is Ibis Market in Mission Hills. You'd never know it by looking, but they dry age prime steaks on site. Their prime is cheaper than Whole Foods choice. They'll bring a slab out, cut the black off, and then cut your steak to order. Very limited selection, but good quality and prices. Caveat - haven't been there in a while, but assume it's still the same.

Jasmine Seafood Restaurant - best of the worst?

Oh how I miss Ton Kiang in the Richmond. Some of the best I've had on the west coast.

Small Bar San Diego

"they have an amazing single malt scotch and bourbon selection." That's good to hear. I couldn't get close enough to really check it out, and all I saw was the standard Glenlivet/Glenfiddich stuff. Perhaps this afternoon...

Wine Shop in San Diego?

Yeah, that was always the plan. Russ is a late addition, it was Bryan and Terry. Don't know if Terry's still involved, haven't seen him in ages, but I think he is.

Wine Shop in San Diego?

By the old Cost Plus outlet, just off Washington west of the 5. Partnering with Russ from 57 degrees, currently on G St. but losing their location to the city for a park.

San Diego - Wetstone Wine Bar

Sparkling Vouvray will have a bit more of a fruit component, and less of the yeasty/toasty notes of champagne. We served one at our wedding, Huet Vouvray Petillant, and even those not enamored with champagne enjoyed it. The Huet is the best I've found, think it's still around $20 or so.

Mister A's in San Diego

Don't know if Sally's downtown still does Chef's tables, but if so, you get a private table for 10-12 people in the presentation kitchen with bay views and the ability to set up a tasting menu in advance.

Wine Shop in San Diego?

Wine Steals does have decent prices. I also like to shop 3rd Corner in OB. Sometimes even beats SD Wine Co. on some offerings. Agree with mcgrath, Wine Bank prices have gone into convention/expense account neighborhood.

DISH restaurant in Hillcrest/San Diego

Haven't been in a while. Both visits I had were average food for high prices, but that was a while ago, and so many places are adjusting to the economy.

I work across the street, and it doesn't seem to be open all that often, mostly weekends, so I'd call first.

Duck and lamb stock in San Diego

Try Surfas in LA. They have the lamb, and sometimes duck.

SD: Craving me some Potatoes..

Tater Tots and a cold beer at Bub's Dive Bar...Yumm!

George's at the Cove $40 3 course dinner

Every Friday, Wine Vault and Bistro has a 3 course menu for $20. Excellent food, excellent wine choices too.

Churros El Tigre and La Fachada- SD

Funny story about our health department. We share a kitchen with our neighbors, as I only have to wash knives and cutting boards once a day. When they got their triple sink, it came with decals for the outside to indicate fill levels for the wash tub and rinse tub. No instructions, no codes tell you how much water has to be in the tub or where these decals should be put. So they just slapped them on. They were cited by the health department because when they inspected, the water wasn't up to the fill level decals. Never mind that if they filled them that high, you couldn't wash anything without sloshing water all over the place.

That being said, if you're selling food, you're required to have a place where you can wash your hands. Indeed, tough on the little guys.

Casa Adams = Authentic? (San Diego)

One of the most eye-opening experiences of my life was when I moved from PA to CA and saw a Taco Bell. "holy crap, they have those here?"

Best Patty Melt in San Diego..

One thing I'll say about DZ is that they make an edible pierogi, something impossible to find in this town since Cottage Cafe closed.

Communal Tables in San Diego County

Ruby Kitchen

Opinions please!

Lazy afternoon, sitting with your dog on the patio with a pradorita in your hand, not bad.

Red Door Mission Hills

You are right Honkman, it was addressing my "false sense of entitlement" comment to another poster.

My point about the auto repair is that, if they have any sense, you won't get your car back until the repair is done right. If you have to take it back several times, of course you won't be using them again. A restaurant doesn't have the luxury of keeping you on premises until it's done right. They may only get one or two hours.

Youse guys are a tough crowd!

Red Door Mission Hills

Honkman, that's not a realistic comparison and you know it. A restaurant doesn't get to keep you until they get it right. An auto repair shop does. There's a reason most critics don't review restaurants right after their doors open. Talk to restaurant owners, and very few, if any, will tell you they can hit the ground running perfectly. Heck, my first meal at Better Half sucked, but the next visit was night and day different.

And the sense of entitlement I was talking about was expecting someone else to shell out their hard earned bucks for a meal and feeling you deserve their review. Go shell out your own bucks if you don't like what the review says. Had nothing to do with being entitled to a good meal.

Red Door Mission Hills

"Some Chowhounds might possibly be weathering the times carefully, and we certainly deserve to know the fine print about the places we choose to spend our money."

Really. Deserve? Sounds like a false sense of entitlement to me. And doesn't someone who has invested their hard work and money "deserve" a chance to get their doors open and work things out a bit before getting trashed? It's hard to make a business go these days, and I respect that the OP factors that in. Plus I wouldn't go jumping to conclusions on one poster's visit during opening week. But that's just me, your mileage apparently varies.

Urban Solace is a class act

I know what you mean, but it happens to me all over the country, not just SD. Heck, it happened at Picasso in Las Vegas, had to send the entree back twice! I don't recall having that experience at US, but could have happened once. Busy places trying to turn tables, I guess. Not that that's an excuse.

Urban Solace is a class act

Love their Sunday brunch, damn good biscuits and gravy.
