Places I like around Raleigh
I'm in the area and I would like to find a good eat for a friend and me to go one day. I've read through this post and I guess it sounds like Royal India is our best bet. Is that buffet for lunch only, or lunch and dinner? I would like to find a good Vietnamese Restaurant in the area too, if anyone can help with that. I went to one on Capitol, forgot the name, last summer but it wasn't very good. It was in a shopping center close to the beltline and on Capital. They couldn't figure out how to work their Visa machine either, and charged me 3 times for my meal. I called them to fix it, but couldn't really follow through properly myself, as it's my husbands card, and he was quite busy, so I really don't know if we ever really got the credit or not.
Salt Lake City Recommendations?
Just Curious! Why is Log Haven on your " Places I wouldn't go" List? We just moved to SLC and went out to dinner with a colleage of my husband and his wife. They took us to LOG HAVEN, it was beautiful. The wine was great and the food was great. We had a german/swiss cheese dish appertif that was great, and a soup with mexican chipotle seasoning, fantastic. The flavour was very different yet very pleasant. I had the Grilled Diver Scallops with exotic mushrooms, fantastic to say the least. I loved it. I imagine it's a great place to go in the summer, they have the outside open for diners. I certainly would not group them with chain restaurants like: The Melting Pot, don't know the others. We've only been in SLC for 3 weeks.
My wood cutting board smells. HELP!
I also saw Martha Stewart use lemon on hers, I think she used kosher salt and rubbed it in with half a lemon. I believe she cleans her copperware the same way. Worth a try. In the future you may to use the wood cutting board for veggis only and something else for your meats.
Kitchenaid Stand Mixer
So glad you asked this question, I got one for Christmas from my Aunt 2 years ago, but we have been moving across country and it's still in the box. All my things are still back east, but I have been looking at getting attachments. I did buy a cover, and I will certainly buy another bowl and beater. I have been searching high and low for the copper bowl, but read Foiegras comment that it was a waste. Isn't the copper bowl best for whipping whipped cream? Maybe you don't make that much whipped cream? There are many uses for it. Does anyone else have the copper bowl and what are your thoughts on it. Don't eat meat so I don't need the grinder, and I already have an electric citrus squeezer and an Ice Cream Maker, but I will consider the pasta attachment. Is making pasta easy enough? This I would love to do, then I could make all the different flavors, fresh.
Ever ask for chopsticks at a non-Asian restaurant?
I am American, but eat many things with Chopsticks. I always use them for asian food, to me it just doesn't taste good without them. I even use them at home as well, I use the Chinese soup spoons at home too. They are so much better than our spoons. I do think they are more graceful and even kinder and gentler to the food. It does seem horrific to stab the food with a fork, esp. food like olives, mushrooms, and many other food items. They are great for getting olives out of jars. I often do carry them in my purse, just in case, and I like using my own and not those cheap ones they give you in the restaurants. Practice makes perfect! I have a friend from Taiwan and she exclaimed that she had never seen an American use chopsticks so well! I was proud.
To Diet or Not to Diet...?
Striver! You're exactly right! I was reading this thread and as I was reading each comment, I was thinking exactly everything you have said here. I too am a Weight Watcher Lifetime Member! I lost 20lbs. not so much to a lot of people but it was still a life changing event for me as well. I still had the same results as you. A total change of lifestyle and eating habits. I am a exercise guru now to all my friends, and I'm also known as the "foodie" at the same time. I eat good food, but not so much of it, I exercise regularly and eat healthy and many organic items. Overall, it's about living longer and healthier and therefore a more satisfying life. I still dance, I still have fun and laugh and enjoy great restaurants with friends, while staying in shape. I'm going on a cruise in May to Mexico and I will be Bikini Ready! Old Navy has the cutest ones, I'm going next week to pick up a couple! Bon Vonyage and good luck to staying in shape and young and fit! I'm 43 years old!
Albuquerque: Best of?
I lived in Albuquerque for 1 year, and I'm originally from NY Too. l also lived in Las Vegas for 2 years, now I just moved from ABQ 3 weeks ago to Salt Lake City. I did eat at El Patio, the location in Santa Fe, wasn't impressed. I also ate at Sadie's, I love Mexican Food, love the roasted New Mexican Chilies, but that sauce! In my opinion . . . I could do without! Either red or green really doesn't matter to me, all it does (to me) is cover up the food to where all I taste is the sauce and can't taste the food anymore. I thought if I wanted a bowl of chili sauce I would have just ordered that. Of those two restaurants I would pick Sadie's over El Patio. As with Asian, there is a really cool, worth the trip, asian-fusion restaurant in Albuquerque. It's located at the Cottonwood Mall, and called Chow's. http://mychows.com/ The Wasabi Shrimp is their signature dish and it's excellent! Most everything we tried there was excellent, we went there frequently. A very refreshing change for asian cuisine, it's light and fresh, and worth the trip for sure. I really think you'll like this one.
Vegas Report- Vietnamese Food
You mean now I can eat it for breakfast too! . . . not just lunch and dinner! . . . . just another excuse to eat it all day!
Vegas - Seeking Pearl Tea
The Herb Store next to Hua Thai on Spring Mountain, DOES HAVE the Pearl Tea! Bought some there myself. We drink tea almost every night. They also have large bags of Whole Star Anise. They used to carry really big bags for only $6.00 each, but now the bags are smaller. Anyway, I simmer the whole STAR ANISE in a pot for about an hour, makes great tea! So delicious! You can use it more than once too, will last a few times.

This is another good vietnamese restaurant in Las Vegas. I was a Hua Thai regular, but one day went for lunch, on my lunch break from work. They were so busy I was a few minutes late getting back to work, so one day I just walked in here. I was very pleasantly surprised and it quickly became a hit with my co-workers. They are very small so they're not really busy, but their Pho is excellent, and I like that they put so many veggi's in it. The usuall veggi's but just more of it, and the stock is excellent. I really don't think you can get bad Vietnamese food in Las Vegas, atleast I've never had any. Truth be told Las Vegas rocks when it comes to V-Food, and many other ethnic foods as well.
Ellis Island
Went back again for Clams and Liguini, satisfied and good friendly service. Enjoyed!
Good Vietnamese Soup in salt Lake Area?
Well, I stopped at a few Vietnamese places and they said they would not make me Shrimp Noodle soup! Some even had Seafood Noodle available but wouldn't put just the shrimp, so I ended up at Pho Bien Hoa and they had no problem with it. Bought take out and the next day we went and ate there! Very good.
One place even told me, when I mentioned I get it Las Vegas, that people in Utah don't want Shrimp soup! I guess since I'm here, they do now! And, since I eat this soup about once to twice or more even a week, they lost a good amount of business from what would have been a very regular customer!
Italian in Las Vegas?
I'll definately try Cappazolli's when I'm in town next time, just moved to Salt Lake City, but still work in LV on occasion.
just moved to vegas...restaurant suggestions?
Try Nina's or Nora's Wine Bar too! I forget which it is, but they are really good, and if you really like wine it's fun. I like their bruchettas, they are really flavorful and fun to eat. Just those and wine are great, but I did have dinner there and was very satisfied, service 5 star too!
Good Vietnamese Soup in salt Lake Area?
Just moved here from Vegas last weekend! I can't live without my Vietnamese noodle soup! Where can I find it here? Thanks! Christina
Leaving for Albuquerque today and Santa Fe
Sorry I missed your post, but maybe next time! I'll keep Harry's in mind. I ended up just going straight back to Albuquerque that day, and went to Rockfish Seafood Grill with my husband, for a simple dinner.
Opentable.com
I was running late for dinner as my husband's plane was an hour late at LAS. First I called and cancelled and told them the reason, but then when my husband finally got here, we went on to dinner anyway. I did call again and they said to come on. I didn't get any points though, so I did call the restaurant and left a message for the manager, haven't seen any points yet, but it's only been a week. I did read though in the bylaws, that I may not be eligible for points now, I think it's up to the individual restaurant.
Ellis Island
I enjoy the "dive" casinos myself, living here most of the time, you get tired of being around so many "guests". That's what I call them. The $1.00 beers are good too, but you have to make sure the waiter understands that's what you want, we thought we were ordering that and ended up getting the light beer on tap which is $1.50. Not that big of a deal, but it just wasn't what we really ordered, but then our waiter wasn't home that day anyway.
I have an aunt flying into Vegas tomorrow, I plan on taking her and my mom to Ellis for Clams and Liguini, we're an Italian family and we eat that often at home, but their version is so good, I would like to share it with them.
Your favorite sandwich fillings
I'm vegetarian so I like French Brie Cheese, Avocado, sprouts, red pepper slices, pesto.
I've made sandwhiches for my husband from leftovers at Christmas with:
Fried Shrimp
Pesto
Mustard and Horseradish or some combo
Scrambled Egg
Cheddar Cheese
Ham on Kaiser Roll and he likes hot sauce sprinkled inside too!
Ellis Island
Went to Ellis Island this past weekend. Was scared to order the Clams and Liguini (it not being an italian establishment), but saw another patron brave it out. Looked good from afar. I went for it! Had the worst service in the world, think waiter was either new or just not very bright, couldn't figure out which, but after getting a new waiter to bring me some graded parm, Kraft I'm sure, the Clams and Liguini was actually a big success! The wine sauce they made it in was super good, loads of flavor! The dozen clams, little necks, were juicy and not overcooked and meaty! Very well done; I'll be back to get that again, may bring my own freshly graded parm but for $10.95 and I can wear my sneakers, who can complain! My husband liked his Prime Rib dinner for $8.95 too, and both came with choice of salad or soup, hint: get the salad! We ordered one of each just to try, the soup had no flavor and looked more like a clam bisque and not a clam chowder.
Opentable.com
Any chowhounders find Opentable.com useful. What are your thoughts on this. I used it two nights ago in Las Vegas, when I called a restaurant for reservations I wanted to go to,and they wouldn't take my reservation. So, I went there and saw where I could get a reservation at the time I wanted that evening, worked great and really simple to do. I think we got better service that way too.
Leaving for Albuquerque today and Santa Fe
I will be visiting Santa Fe for a day while in Albuquerque for the week only this time. I will be going to the Georgia O'Keefe Museum, she is one of my favorite artists. I will probably have lunch there somewhere that day, any suggestions. I like Authentic Mexican over New Mexican food, and I don't mind eating of a whole other cuisine while there. I have had plenty of New Mexican, I actually live in Albuquerque, Las Vegas (Nevada) and North Carolina intermittently, so New Mexican food is nothing new to me. Just want a good lunch and something comfortable for one person, I'm going alone. Thanks!
Las Vegas - Fix
Oh no, sorry, I didn't mean to imply the food was good, I've never eaten there either! I only go for the evening entertainment, I don't think they serve food in the evening. I've never even sat at the tables, when I go I dance the whole time!
First time at Lotus of Siam. . . a little disappointed
My Vegetarian friend liked it a lot and she's not really fond of Asian food of any kind, so that says a lot, it's just that when you've had something better . . . the food wasn't bad, it was good, just not the best I've had, like I've heard so many times before. It's all relative. I think that they may have had a little too much hype, by people that have had nothing but really bad thai food, I know there's a lot of that out there. But, since my favorite place is closed, they moved out of state, I will probably be back just because there's nothing better right now.
Well . . . off to lunch! It's either going to be American (Ellis Island) or Vietnamese (Hue Tai), which ever way the car goes!
Las Vegas - Fix
We go to Harrah's and Carnival Court all the time! We love it there, where else but Vegas can you get free live entertainment 24-7, food, and drinks all reasonably priced. And have so much fun dancing and kareoke, and the piano bar is great fun too.
Albuquerque ...
Maybe too late but, a good place to eat for non-New Mexican Food is Chow's Asian Bistro in the Cottonwood Mall. It's sort of a asian fusion type of cuisine and very refreshing and different for asian. Try the Wasabi Shrimp, if you're not afraid, it's excellent! When in Albuquerque we go there all the time.
Where to go tonight for Dinner in Las Vegas, Vegetarian Options?
Went to Nora's! Loved it! We like "the scene", hate to say it but we do have to admit to being atleast medium party animals! We've been known to dance until the place closes, more than once a week! Anyway, it was perfect. We bought the "credit card" for $30.00 while waiting on our table to sample the wines in the ultra cool wine refrigerators, fun stuff. Then, at the table enjoyed the Brushettas and #1, #3, and #6 wine tastings, along with 2 other appertifs and 1 pasta, and 1 spinach pizza! I know that was a lot of food but we were really having fun and went for it. Had to bring home a little pasta and half the pizza. The waiter was 5 star, 5 diamond! Kept bringing our dishes and tastings of wines so that we never had to wait for it or ask for anything, nor was it brought too early (one of my pet peeves). We also bought glasses of the wines we liked best from the tasting. Extensive Vegi meal for 2, with wine bar ($30.00), with tip $190.00) I think well spent and couldn't have enjoyed myself more. I will definiately be returning to Nora's Wine Bar on Rampart.
Champagne Brunches in Las Vegas
Found a cute restaurant in Venetian that has a brunch on sundays cheap too. Only like $21 or so dollars, looked good. Going to try it in 2 weeks, I'll write back!
Where to go tonight for Dinner in Las Vegas, Vegetarian Options?
I am looking at an Italian Restaurant on Rampart called Nora's anyone been there. They seem to have good vegi options on their menu. I think Mexican, Indian, Italian, Asian are all good for vegi's. I know that's a pretty wide range, but to narrow it down we ate Mexican 3 days already, ate at Lotus of Siam last night, so Italian is looking pretty good right now. Any suggestions? Semi-Local so no problem driving. I lived in Las Vegas a while, and now come here every couple of months to work. Will be in town throughout February. Thanks in advance!
