Markets Near Ronda

We're staying in a house outside of Ronda. We'll be doing a combination of eating out and cooking at the house. Looking for a market to buy local fresh produce. Although the large grocery stores are okay, we're looking more for large open air with stalls type of market.

Eating My Way Through Spain

I'm heading to Spain from Berkeley in mid September with 5 close friends. We all love to eat. Our travel priorities are: 1) to eat, and 2) to relax. I was in southern Spain last year and fell in love with the country, the people and the food. We'll be in Spain for about 12 days, traveling from Madrid to Andalusia region. Not sure where we'll be staying, most likely around Rhoda or Gaucin. Would love to know places to eat, markets to visit, and other places of interest. We'll have a kitchen. Our tentative cities to visits (we're open to suggestions):

-Madrid
-Toledo
-Sevilla
-Cordoba
-Malaga
-Granada

We're open to any and all suggestions. We don't need fancy, we just need good. Thanks in advance for your comments.

Vi's Restaurant - Oakland

Glad to hear that he and his mother are relaxing but sad to know that I will no longer be able to have their amazing soups and noodle salads. Their won tons rocked! Thanks for the update.

Vi's Restaurant - Oakland

Vi's Restaurant on Webster and 7th. It's been years. But I was just craving the duck pho with star anise and baby bok choy. I remembered when they closed, about 5 years ago, because of the increased rents. The owner (I can't remember his name) told me he was looking for another location to re-open. Anyone know what happened?

the Berkeley Bowl tamale lady

I've gotten tamales from the woman across from Monterey Market. I think it's the same woman, she sells out of her truck. I've gotten both chicken and pork, very yummy, moist, good flavor. Was looking for her the other day. I think she said she's at the MM area on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Regarding if you should buy out of a truck or not, with or without certificates. I work in public health and love good street food. I travel internationally for work (India and Turkey) and will often go out to find a good street vendor to try the local fare. There is a risk to eating out, both on the street and in a restaurants, locally and internationally. I've gotten more sick from eating in local (Berkeley) restaurants than I have from street vendors. Health inspection certificates are important, but not the end all and be all of safety. Use common sense, I wouldn't chomp on raw lettuce on the streets of Mumbai, but these tamales are cooked thoroughly so most icky germs are killed off. And I think that most street vendors that have "regular" hours and locations count on repeat business so are careful not to "poison" their customers.

Buy a tamales for $1, use your eyes and nose, try it on the spot (I think she has napkins), if you like it buy more.

Saturday night meal near Grand Hyatt in SF

We've got a friend visiting from Australia (born and raised in India), staying at the Grand Hyatt for a conference. Would like to take him out for dinner on Saturday night. Any suggestions nearby?

Fried Chicken (in or near Berkeley)

Okay, so for game 2 of the historic match-up between the Celtics and Lakers, my 9 year old son say, "You know what would be great for game watching? Fried Chicken!" I agree. Now, normally I would make oven-fried chicken, but time is not my friend today. So take out is the way to go. Any thoughts on good fried chicken in or near Berkeley? A place I can go and get a bucket without heading through a drive-through? Go Celtics!

In MSP from Berkeley

We're visiting family in Minn/St. Paul for the next few days. We're going to the Heartland for dinner tomorrow night. Any suggestions on "must go" places in the area? We don't need fancy, we just like good eats and good vibes.

Mint Leaf on Shattuck (Berkeley)

Milder spicing? Ummm? Well we'll try it tonight before the Berkeley Rep show.

Mint Leaf on Shattuck (Berkeley)

Was walking down Shattuck past Epicurious Garden and noticed a new Indian Restaurant, Mint Leaf. Any reports?

Taiwanese Parents Visiting Berkeley

My Taiwanese parents are driving up from Newport Beach to be with the grandkids for Christmas. And I'm looking for a good authentic Taiwanese place. They always say that there is not good Taiwanese or Chinese restaurants in the Bay Area. I tend to agree. Most are amazingly bad Americanized places that are overly salted, overly soy sauced dishes. But I'm ready to prove them wrong. I think I've been to every (okay maybe not every, but it seems like it) Chinese restaurant in Berkeley/Albany/Oakland area and nothing rocks my world. I'm ready to drive to find a place.

Rest. Gift Certificate for Xmas

Have you eaten there lately? I had the most amazing meal there, about 15 years ago (or was it longer), but lately I've been hearing not so favorable reports.

Rest. Gift Certificate for Xmas

Looking for a FAB-U-LOUS, knock your socks off restaurant in the East Bay or SF to get a gift certificate for my husband for X-mas. Last year it was French Laundry. I'm out of the SF restaurant scene, last time I was in SF for a rock 'em sock 'em restaurant was years and years ago when Masa's was amazing.

Fresh Olives to Cure

I think we can share! Foodfan, are your olives ripe for harvest?

Fresh Olives to Cure

Oh ya, it's olive season (nifty article in the NYTimes today) and we're looking for fresh olives to cure. Anyone out there know of a source? I'm going to check in with folks from Monterey Market and Berk. Bowl but though I'd ask the Chowhound circle.

fun place to eat with teenagers - east bay

we're tired, we're hunger and we're looking for some fun. can't muster up the energy to cook dinner tonight. i've got two teenagers to feed and hoping to take them somewhere good and fun. something a bit different, can't do another "boring" restaurant near our house (ashby and college) we're in berkeley but can motor anywhere for good eats.

Places in Pacific Grove Area [moved from San Francisco board]

We're at Asilomar for the night (for a conference). Although the grounds at Asilomar are stunning, the food is pretty cafeteria like. Would like to have dinner off site, but where? I've got a car and we're looking for good food (maybe seafood, but pretty open--to type and price). Any suggestions? I looked at previous posts, but most were a few years old.

Maya in SF

My family and some friends are heading to Maya this evening. Don't know much about it. Any suggestions, comments? Thanks.

Sudden Urge for Mexican in Berkeley (near Shattuck)

I'm sitting in my office (near Berkeley Bowl) and I'm having a sudden urge for Mexican (Tortilla soup, carnitas, etc.), but where to go?

Bakesale Betty (oakland) : Love at first Bite

Yup. Love the place. Amazing chicken pot pies and incredibly nice people. I've been raving about this place to my husband (he's a scone addict but has never been) so we stopped by the other day and they were closed. But Mike saw the disappointment in our eyes, make us a table on the sidewalk and served us two teas and a strawberry shortcake...for free. But like the other post, sure they give away freebies, but it is more about a dedication to people and providing good eats. Can't beat that. I hope other businesses take note. By the way, my husband and I went back a few days later and ordered much more than we could eat (including a frozen pot pie and a few scones) and he's now a true fan.

Quick Good Eats Near 22nd and Valencia

Sounds good. Thanks.

Quick Good Eats Near 22nd and Valencia

I'm going to a show at the Marsh, tonight (8pm), and need to know a good place to grab some dinner. We won't be leaving Berkeley until 6:30 so it needs to be quick. Any suggestions?

"Rehearsal Dinner" for 35 in Berkeley/Oakland

So it's not really a rehearsal dinner, but it is a dinner for his and my family on a Saturday night before the wedding. The combined brood will be about 35 (including about 7 under the age of 9). We wanted Oliveto's, but alas the private room only holds 28 comfortably. Drat!

Most of the family will be staying at the Claremont and a few scattered around Berkeley. Any suggestions on places near and far?

Good place in Berkeley area w/out kids

I'm not too worried about the cost, just want a good meal.

Good place in Berkeley area w/out kids

Okay, so we have a rare treat--dinner without kids and a movie. Looking for a good place to eat, not necessarily an expensive or dressy place, just looking for a meal that won't disappoint. What's your favorite place to eat in Berkeley/Albany area?

Where can you get some lemon meringue pie in this town?

The Bread Workshop (University and Acton) makes a killer lemon meringue.

Driving down Hwy 1 to Costa Noa

We're heading out of town for a romantic getaway without kids. Driving down Hwy 1 to Costa Noa (in Pescadero, half way between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz). Any suggestions on good eats to stop along the way or places to go near Pescadero. Looking for good eats, no need for fancy.
