Gluten Free in the city (not for the fad diet, but because I miss eating out) Any gluten-free search will probably uncover Risotteria (on Bleecker St.). Mostly pizza and beer -- and breadsticks. There is a take-out area where they sell gluten-free items including baking mixes. There is a store that sells gluten-free items on West 85th St. east of Columbus Ave. In general, it's gotten much easier to find gluten-free food, both in restaurants and in food stores. Good luck with the diet! |

Just noticed a Japanese/Hawaiian place called Makana on 1st Ave. between 115th & 116th. Looked it up on menupages and see that it has a single poke dish, plus a few other hawaiian items. |

I also like Malecon and Gennaro (remember the antipasta plate was good, though it's been awhile since I've been). Best Indian in the area is Indus Valley at Broadway & 100th, though it's on the pricey side for Indian. You might consider Pio Pio at Amsterdam & 94th ( check menupages to see if you like the menu). Decent Mexican at Noche Mexicana on Amsterdam near 100th or 101st. Haven't tried it, but am curious about Warique, a Peruvian place on Amsterdam near 101st. Cheapest of all, if the weather is good: the taco truck on 96th St. west of Broadway! |

smoked salmon bagel near 85th and broadway? Another vote for Barney Greengrass. For takeout there is also Murray's Sturgeon on Broadway between 89th and 90th. They have a small selection of bagels, but you can go across the street to Tal's for that. There's no better neighborhood for smoked salmon except, perhaps, the lower east side. |

Brooklyn Neighborhoods & Restaurants - Newbie Happy exploring! There are other great neighborhoods with great food. Here's part 2: Greenpoint And then there's Queens... |

It's Kosher Marketplace and it's closer to 89th or 90th on the east side of Broadway. Barney Greengrass is great! A classic. Kefi is good. Basic go-to spot near you is French Roast on 85th and Broadway, which is open 24 hours. There are a couple of non-Starbucks coffee places: one on Amsterdam & 86th (Coffee, Tea, Leaf and Bean?) and another on Columbus near 85th (Joe, the Art of Coffee). There is a new-ish kosher sushi/steak restaurant place near you: KO Prime on 85th east of Broadway. I don't know how good it is. There are lots of vegetarian options, mostly on Amsterdam in the 80s. |

Lenny's Bagels on Broadway at 98th St.: IIRC there is a "bad boy" bagel that has jalapeno, cheese and some other flavor. I'm not sure how pronounced the jalapeno is. I like their bagels, though: I might rank them above Tal's but not above Absolute. |

Myers of Keswick (Hudson St. bet. Horatio and Jane in the west village): it's a food store not a restaurant, but he might be able to find some of the items he misses like candy or biscuits. They make their own sausages and savory pies -- and scotch eggs. |

An app to help you find a restaurant Does Menupages have an app? If not, perhaps you could go to that website. You can browse by cuisine and neighborhood. |

I've always preferred El Malecon (Amsterdam near 97th) to La Caridad but haven't been for a couple of years. They probably have roast pork on Sundays. I liked it but it wasn't my favorite dish there (some nice moist pieces, some skin, but also some dry parts). I get everything there with yellow rice and red -- not black -- beans, by the way. |

I recommend Barney Greengrass! It's been around for years and is still great. I can't speak for the pastrami, but the fish is great, and I also love the glass of borscht with sour cream. Murray's Sturgeon is very good too, but there is no place to sit. You could take out and have a picnic. Artie's is OK but I much prefer the other two places. |

Near 65th St. & 12th Avenue in Brooklyn I'm playing an opera at this location (Magic Flute this weekend and next -- come on out!) and tried to search this board but am not sure which neighborhood I'm in. Have checked out 11th Ave. between N train stop at Ft. Hamilton Pkwy near 61st St. and 65th St. La Sorrentino is pretty good. Also found a couple of Chinese places that aren't great, unless I didn't know what to order. Did I miss anything? Thanks again, everyone. |

Am I missing any Uptown good eats on my list ???/ Another vote for El Malecon. I prefer the red beans to the black, BTW. If you really don't want to go below 110th, I think they have a branch in Washington Heights (Broadway around 177th, I think). Also second Flor de Mayo. I love the stuffed potato app. The Hungarian Pastry Shop is on Amsterdam bet. 110 and 111. I haven't been for awhile but it gets mixed reviews. Two alternatives: La Toulousanerie (not sure of the name) is on Amsterdam near 107th. Artopolis on Amsterdam near 114th and is a branch of the place in Astoria. |

Is there ANY decent pizza on the UWS?! It's not classic pizza, but I like the slices (which are square) at La Grolla pizzeria on Amsterdam bet. 79 & 80. There's good variety and one $3.50 slice is just about enough for a light lunch. I don't see it mentioned much here. |

Just talking from a sightseeing standpoint, which may be off-topic, but: I agree with coasts that it's a great combination with the High Line. I like how they renovated Chelsea Market and think it's worth seeing. It's certainly not your average food court! |

I LOVE the Supersizers! Are they still on the Cooking Channel? |

Inexpensive lunch near 55th & Lex -- including food trucks I have to be in this area next week. So far, mostly chains and generic delis. If it must be a chain, I don't mind Pret a Manger, but find it a bit pricey. Haven't yet tried Citibank food court offerings: anything worthwhile there? Tried Rocco DiSpirito's truck -- underwhelming. |

This Fri or Sat: not too noisy My parents are making a spur-of-the-moment trip to NYC this weekend and want to have dinner someplace nice. Wishlist: Not too noisy so that we can hear each other easily, but not so quiet that it's stuffy. Lots of fish/vegetarian choices (my Dad keeps kosher and my Mom will eat beef, lamb or chicken but doesn't eat traif). They're staying on the upper east side and I'm on the upper west. They probably don't want to go too far, but if it's a real destination place then maybe. Not overpriced. Thanks again, all. |

That may be because the rugelach was "parve" i.e. no dairy (or meat). I always check to see that there is butter (and maybe cream cheese) in the ingredients before buying. |

Chinese: where can I find these dishes? Actually, scoopG, I don't mind Manhattan suggestions. I live on the UWS, but thought it more likely that I'd find what I'm looking for in Flushing or Sunset Park (and was too lazy to repost on Manhattan board). Thanks though. |

Chinese: where can I find these dishes? Just returned from China. I had some fantastic food that I hope I can find here. Most notably: 1. Had an epic meal at a hotel restaurant in Chaoyang (up north in Liaoning Province) where a standout dish was shrimp on skewers with red peppers. The red peppers where fried until dry and crispy. It was hot but not too hot for me (I don't have a lot of tolerance for too much heat). Generally curious about northern Chinese cuisine. 2. Also north: ate at a famous dumpling restaurant in Shenyang. Looking for great dumplings in NYC. Also looking for a wonderful tea they had at that restaurant: a beautiful combination of loose tea, flowers, spices and a lump of sugar sitting in the bottom of the covered tea cup. The waiter came by with a hot water pitcher with a spout that must have been 5' long and poured water into our cups -- didn't miss once. 3. Ate in the muslim neighborhood in Xi'an. Loved the spicy skewers of lamb, and the soup with some lamb flavor, but which was also made with rye bread, which imparted a nice flavor. Have only scratched the surface of Chinese cuisine. Eager to try it all! Thanks in advance. |

Artopolis has an outpost on Amsterdam Ave. near 114th St. (across from St. Luke's hospital complex). Second Gulluoglu: many flavors of baklava! ----- Gulluoglu |

Greek yogurt sales continue to soar I'm a big fan of the Liberte brand. The flavors are interesting (I like plum & fig, pineapple, orange & passionfruit, and now they have black cherry). They used to sell mocha but haven't for a number of years. |

What NYC food item do you send to 75 people from out of town - other than bagels? I've heard great things about rugaleh from LooLoo's on 118th St. Not sure if I have the name right -- can anyone help? Thanks. ----- |

The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs (Episode 6 "Food Auction") [Spoilers] Ironic. Did you mention it because Chef Zakarian almost got eliminated because of powdered sugar? |

The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs (Episode 3: "Lets All Go To The Lobby") [SPOILERS] BTW, do anyone notice how they pronounce "foie gras" on IC? FOIE-gre. |

Saw it Friday, Nov 4 at the Whole Foods on Columbus Ave. north of 97th St. ----- |

help identify old cooking show Hilarious, mcsheridan! He was quite overweight and cooked with huge amounts of butter. |

Best cooking/food themed movies? Didn't I just reply to a similar thread? Anyhow, here are a couple I haven't seen mentioned here: 1. Tom Jones 2. Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands. Try to get the subtitled version, not the dubbed one because it's great to hear Brazilian Portuguese. |

If Kalustyans doesn't have it, you might have good luck in Queens. I think there are Turkish food markets in Sunnyside and you might also have some success in Astoria. Good luck. ----- |
