Am I missing any Uptown good eats on my list ???/

Another vote for El Malecon. I prefer the red beans to the black, BTW. If you really don't want to go below 110th, I think they have a branch in Washington Heights (Broadway around 177th, I think). Also second Flor de Mayo. I love the stuffed potato app.

The Hungarian Pastry Shop is on Amsterdam bet. 110 and 111. I haven't been for awhile but it gets mixed reviews. Two alternatives: La Toulousanerie (not sure of the name) is on Amsterdam near 107th. Artopolis on Amsterdam near 114th and is a branch of the place in Astoria.

Is there ANY decent pizza on the UWS?!

It's not classic pizza, but I like the slices (which are square) at La Grolla pizzeria on Amsterdam bet. 79 & 80. There's good variety and one $3.50 slice is just about enough for a light lunch. I don't see it mentioned much here.

Chelsea Market

Just talking from a sightseeing standpoint, which may be off-topic, but: I agree with coasts that it's a great combination with the High Line. I like how they renovated Chelsea Market and think it's worth seeing. It's certainly not your average food court!

Pretentious Foodie Bullsh!t

I LOVE the Supersizers! Are they still on the Cooking Channel?

Inexpensive lunch near 55th & Lex -- including food trucks

I have to be in this area next week. So far, mostly chains and generic delis. If it must be a chain, I don't mind Pret a Manger, but find it a bit pricey. Haven't yet tried Citibank food court offerings: anything worthwhile there? Tried Rocco DiSpirito's truck -- underwhelming.

This Fri or Sat: not too noisy

My parents are making a spur-of-the-moment trip to NYC this weekend and want to have dinner someplace nice. Wishlist:

Not too noisy so that we can hear each other easily, but not so quiet that it's stuffy.

Lots of fish/vegetarian choices (my Dad keeps kosher and my Mom will eat beef, lamb or chicken but doesn't eat traif).

They're staying on the upper east side and I'm on the upper west. They probably don't want to go too far, but if it's a real destination place then maybe.

Not overpriced.

Thanks again, all.

RUGALACH

That may be because the rugelach was "parve" i.e. no dairy (or meat). I always check to see that there is butter (and maybe cream cheese) in the ingredients before buying.

Chinese: where can I find these dishes?

Actually, scoopG, I don't mind Manhattan suggestions. I live on the UWS, but thought it more likely that I'd find what I'm looking for in Flushing or Sunset Park (and was too lazy to repost on Manhattan board). Thanks though.

Chinese: where can I find these dishes?

Just returned from China. I had some fantastic food that I hope I can find here. Most notably:

1. Had an epic meal at a hotel restaurant in Chaoyang (up north in Liaoning Province) where a standout dish was shrimp on skewers with red peppers. The red peppers where fried until dry and crispy. It was hot but not too hot for me (I don't have a lot of tolerance for too much heat). Generally curious about northern Chinese cuisine.

2. Also north: ate at a famous dumpling restaurant in Shenyang. Looking for great dumplings in NYC. Also looking for a wonderful tea they had at that restaurant: a beautiful combination of loose tea, flowers, spices and a lump of sugar sitting in the bottom of the covered tea cup. The waiter came by with a hot water pitcher with a spout that must have been 5' long and poured water into our cups -- didn't miss once.

3. Ate in the muslim neighborhood in Xi'an. Loved the spicy skewers of lamb, and the soup with some lamb flavor, but which was also made with rye bread, which imparted a nice flavor.

Have only scratched the surface of Chinese cuisine. Eager to try it all! Thanks in advance.

Greek Bakeries

Artopolis has an outpost on Amsterdam Ave. near 114th St. (across from St. Luke's hospital complex).

Second Gulluoglu: many flavors of baklava!

Greek yogurt sales continue to soar

I'm a big fan of the Liberte brand. The flavors are interesting (I like plum & fig, pineapple, orange & passionfruit, and now they have black cherry). They used to sell mocha but haven't for a number of years.

What NYC food item do you send to 75 people from out of town - other than bagels?

I've heard great things about rugaleh from LooLoo's on 118th St. Not sure if I have the name right -- can anyone help? Thanks.

The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs (Episode 6 "Food Auction") [Spoilers]

Ironic. Did you mention it because Chef Zakarian almost got eliminated because of powdered sugar?

The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs (Episode 3: "Lets All Go To The Lobby") [SPOILERS]

BTW, do anyone notice how they pronounce "foie gras" on IC? FOIE-gre.

Ben & Jerry's Schweddy Balls

Saw it Friday, Nov 4 at the Whole Foods on Columbus Ave. north of 97th St.

help identify old cooking show

Hilarious, mcsheridan! He was quite overweight and cooked with huge amounts of butter.

Best cooking/food themed movies?

Didn't I just reply to a similar thread? Anyhow, here are a couple I haven't seen mentioned here:

1. Tom Jones

2. Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands. Try to get the subtitled version, not the dubbed one because it's great to hear Brazilian Portuguese.

where can i buy Acili ezme?

If Kalustyans doesn't have it, you might have good luck in Queens. I think there are Turkish food markets in Sunnyside and you might also have some success in Astoria. Good luck.

Canned vs. fresh tuna, etc.

Someone started an interesting thread on the Manhattan board lamenting the use of fresh ahi tuna in a salad nicoise instead of canned or jarred tuna. It occurred to me that fresh ingredients aren't always better.

I think that frozen peas are often superior to fresh (though maybe fresh peas have to be really, really fresh). I also like frozen berries.

Thoughts?

Trip report: nice meals in Cornwall and Gloucerstershire

We had lunch there. We were pleasantly surprised right away with bread and Channel Islands butter. My husband had the venison with some nicely crusty potato side and vegetables (sorry, I forget which ones) which he really enjoyed. I had a sardine appetizer on toast with perfectly ripe roasted tomatoes, then the pork shoulder with mashed potatoes and onions. Sorry if I have a hard time remembered the other vegetables, but everything was good. Wish we had room for desert.

UWS - Best Places in 90's and 100's?

Taco place on west side of Amsterdam near 107th (sorry, can't remember name).
Awash for Ethiopian on Amsterdam near 106th (east side of street)
Sip, a nice coffee bar (with food, I think) on west side of Amsterdam near 109th
How far uptown: heard great things about Pasticcio (did I get the name right?) on LaSalle west of Broadway (?)
Krik Krak, a Haitian place on Amsterdam near 102nd: don't know if it's good, but in case you're looking for that cuisine

Bon appetit!

Trip report: nice meals in Cornwall and Gloucerstershire

Just got back from a week in the UK and we had some very nice meals. Standouts includes Sam's on the Beach in Cornwall: http://www.samsfowey.co.uk/index.php/online. There are two locations and this is the second one, overlooking the beach in the Par/St. Austell area.

We also enjoyed the Trouble House outside of Tetbury: www.troublehousetetbury.co.uk. We spent a week going from Cornwell to Bromyard (Folk Music Festival), in and around Wales (Wye Valley area) and ending up in Cirencester.

I don't see much outside of London on this board. Any comments about these areas?

Sifton leaving [moved from Manhattan]

LOL! I thought I was the only one who noticed his overuse of that word.

Mini Review : Doughnut Plant coconut cream doughnut

I also liked the CC doughnuts. I had them at Joe's - The Art of Coffee on Columbus near 85th St. so you might not have to trek downtown for them.

Best Food Films - any new additions?

Highly recommend "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands". Try to get it with subtitles instead of dubbed so you can hear the Brazilian Portuguese. Great food content, but it's also very funny.

No one mentioned the feast in "Tom Jones"?!

homemade chilled red beet borscht

I love the borscht with sour cream at Barney Greengrass.

Staying at the Beacon 5 nights, coming in Monday 8/15

Second Fairway Cafe. If the line at GETE is too long, you should go about 3 block uptown to Barney Greengrass. In fact, you should go even if there is no line.

5 nights with coeliac dad - help !

As usual, Kathryn's suggestions and links are spot-on.

Not a restaurant, but there is a new gluten free shop: G-Free NYC on 77A West 77th St. (on upper west side off Columbus Avenue). I can't vouch for it, but it might have something you can't get elsewhere. Good luck.

Q to Beverly Rd. or F to Church Ave.?

I'll be grabbing dinner this evening on the way back from Brooklyn. Are there good places to eat near the Q stop at Beverly Road or the F train at Church Avenue? Thanks in advance.

If you were visiting NYC after a long absence, which neighborhoods are the best package of sightseeing and good cheap eats?

H&H has closed. If you're on the upper west side and want bagels, try Absolute Bagels on Broadway near 108th or Lenny's (Broadway & 98th). If you want something to put on a bagel, try Barney Greengrass (Amsterdam near 86th), Murray's Sturgeon Shop (Broadway near 89th) or Zabar's (Broadway & 80th), and perhaps could get a bagel at Tal (Broadway near 90th) if you don't want to walk too far for everything.
