Whelk/Welk/Sea Snail & Foie Gras (& Cold Octopus Recipe)

Great to know! Thanks! for the info J & M!

Whelk/Welk/Sea Snail & Foie Gras (& Cold Octopus Recipe)

Update on this one. Shuang Hur only had baby octopus, so trecked to Coastal on Minnehaha and got a 2.5 pound Octopus. Asked about welks and they hadn't had them in for a couple of years. No big deal.

You can order Foie Gras with a delivery day of Friday, weekly at Syrdyk's from a local farm - but they are not butchering much this time of year.

Whelk/Welk/Sea Snail & Foie Gras (& Cold Octopus Recipe)

Does anyone know where I can buy them in the TC? Preferably closer to the West than East side, but I will travel.

Also, does anyone have a good cold octopus recipe they would like to share?

Thanks!

Last night in Paris - Restaurant on Line 7 or Line 12

I would like some suggestions for restaurants on line 7 or 12 for this evening. I would like "typical French" cuisine. We will have our two French friends along and our 6 and 4 year old (so nothing "fancy").

If I need reservations, please let me know.

Thank you in advance.

MMMMMM..... I have fallen in love

Oh, I certainly grew up eating most everything on my plate (minus fois gras). The only things that I can think of that are British are; (the words) bangers and mash & fish and chips, & (the word) trotters. I think that the use of bangers and mash sounds better than sausages stuck in mashed potatoes ;) and I think trotters scares less people off than writing pig's feet. :)

To me, everything was home cooking made beautiful. I guess my use of generalizing Minnesota was too broad. This reminds me of My Minnesota. ;)

I think this string could prove to anyone reading it that they should go there. It may bring you memories of Ma's cooking, or it may bring your memories back of traveling overseas, or it may just give you good food!

But go there. Just go. It is great! :)

MMMMMM..... I have fallen in love

Victory 44 is the essential combination of love of food, simplicity and local faire. All you big chefs - come home to Minnesota!

1. Headcheese - I make it every Christmas with my mom - it is a tradition that I will pass down to my children's children. They did it fantastic - They fried it. New to the palate. I liked it!!

2. Fois Gras - Need I say more?

3. Fantastic service

4. Locals said "Hi" to by name - love it.

5. Wine and beer non stop until the happy hour ends - ours was in 15 minutes after we got there, but what a wonderful idea!

6. I fell in love with the food. Simple pleasures from childhood made beautiful. I will be back.

AND, I won't be scared to bring my parents that think that anywhere past 494/694 ring is impassable because it is the "cities."

I felt comfortable, I fell in love with the food, the service, the atmosphere, the laid-back-ness of it all, the "real Minnesota" that most of us don't know/remember.

This is great.

Thanks Victory 44 for making me fall in love again with Minnesota food....!

MMMMMM.

Good Burnsville Restaurant for Business Lunch

Thanks for the information. I will look into those restaurants.

Good Burnsville Restaurant for Business Lunch

The only thing I remember about B-ville is that they had an Olive Garden there when I was younger. Does anyone have a place they could recommend that is not Olive-Garden-like? I can't do a dive on this one, but family owned or not major chain, and closer to the Prior Lake side of Burnsville - rather than the Apple Valley side is appreciated.

I did a search on "Burnsville" and the only thing that sounded appetizing on the boards was the co-op.... I can't really do a lunch there.

Thanks!

gift certicate [MN]

Hi Sandramrma,

It is on the boarder of Deephaven and Minnetonka right on 101 and Minnetonka Boulevard. It is family friendly and the food fits the very Minnesotan taste. Not great, but not bad. It is right next to Snuffy's (hamburger joint) so it is the place you go when your kids tire of only eating chicken fries and malts... It is an easy and relaxed and also a bit sophisticated, atmosphere, so people feel comfortable there. Hope this helps some! It is also owned by a local person, and I am all for that!!

BBQ KC (that we could bring a vegetarian to, and bring excellent leftovers home from)?

I think Oklahoma Joe's on the Kansas side of KC was a fun experience. Totally locals and it is in the back of a gas station. We knew it was good when there was a line out the door for the food! Have fun!

Typical Minnesota Snack Food?

Hello Uisge,

It actually went well. I sold out and bought something at the store - but it was not Lefse because - well - we aren't of scandinavian decent, and I never even knew what it was until I was an adult.

Since I can see General Mills from my house pretty much I thought that I would bring something that is made from a local company. (pearson's nut rolls - awesome but has peanuts)

I ended up going down the snackbar isle but every snackbar had some type of allergen in it. I ended up with a kid friendly snack that was popular (and brand new) when I was a kid - Fruit Role Ups. No allergens just some hydrogenated oil. I was able to explain General Mills to the kids, and since school is in Golden Valley about 3 other kids said they had parents working there. So it was a fun homework assignment for me. It wasn't homemade, but it is a local company that employes many, many people in the TC/Nationally/Internationally. So I thought it was a fun choice.

Oh, I thought cheesecurds as well, but the only local/MN cheesecurd company I would want to represents is Bongards Creamery (has anyone ever been out there? It is great and they sell these local homemade horseradish pickles that are amazing) and I could not find anything but their sliced cheese.

Thanks for asking how it went!

Typical Minnesota Snack Food?

Thanks! This is my stand by :) I am pretty sure I am going to go with that :)

Typical Minnesota Snack Food?

Hi Community,

Can anyone recommend a typical Minnesota snack food that is:
1. Cross Culturally acceptable (no pork, no dairy/meat combos etc.)
2. Is not an allergen (peanuts, seafood etc.)
3. Is a small bite
4. Not spicy (ha, Minnesotan and spicy - I would like to see that combo - horseradish not included)
5. Suitable to bring to a kindergarten class this morning around 11 11/12/09 (I don't have time to make something time consuming)
6. Real suggestions greatly appreciated (no lutefisk, etc)

Thanks in advance!

MSP - Groceries on the Cheap

Others are ok. The tilapia tastes like a dirty fish tank smells. (ish)
I did buy baby octopus there and they were great one time and overly rancid the next time - both frozen so I was unable to detect a smell when purchasing.

Last Night in MSP for French Exchange Student - College Age

We ended up going to Longfellow and then to Minnehaha Falls. Thanks for the good suggestions to AMG & Big E.

Applebees? Really? Come on now.

No thanks to CEC.... I don't believe in gambling for young or old.

Last Night in MSP for French Exchange Student - College Age

We have one last night - tomorrow night (Tuesday) with our French College age exchange student before she goes home.

We have young children - so we will be going early (5-6/630) Family friendly/cool place suggestions that she can remember when she goes home would be appreciated. We would like a restaurant with nice atmosphere - preferably on the Minneapolis side of town.

Thoughts, suggestions? Outside would be a bonus since the past two weeks have been freezing.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

Golden Valley Minnesota

Go to Latuff''s on 55 near Holiday Station Store instead. Family owned good food, good prices. About 2 miles west of that place - went once - comparable to nursing home food.

MSP - Groceries on the Cheap

Hey Bob,
I go there about once a week. Most everything is very good. Excellent deal on Tofu and fresh noodles. The barbecues are great. My husband loves the chicken feet - I am not a fan of Chinese 5 Spice, but they are decent. The fish counter is very good. The talapia tastes like a dirty fish tank though - but I don't like talapia anyway. The fish always smells fresh and is well cleaned. The butcher counter has very polite helpful people.

Matiz Gallego Polpo Octopus in Twin Cities?

Thank you!

Matiz Gallego Polpo Octopus in Twin Cities?

Very possible. I was trying to find it for my husband's birthday. Maybe next year!

Matiz Gallego Polpo Octopus in Twin Cities?

Where is Bills?

Matiz Gallego Polpo Octopus in Twin Cities?

Hi Sal and Faith,

I will check with both. Yes, I have heard that it is spectacular. With the on-line price of around $7 per tin it should be good! I will go to Mercado and also try Surdyk's. I went to Shuang Her (Across the street from Quang) and purchased baby octopus and squid after my search that day. It tided me over until I find it!

Matiz Gallego Polpo Octopus in Twin Cities?

I am looking for the name brand "Matiz" brand canned octopus without having to order it on line. Does anyone know where I can find this product in the TC? I have already tried Lund's/Byerly's. Next stop Broders but this is a Spanish product. Any ideas?

Thanks.
