Norgaard's Bakery in Astoria
My family lived in Astoria till I was 14 in 1964. I went to Norgaard's many times. I seem to recall a checkerboard cookie. A Proustian moment? (I grew up to be a wine guy, btw.)
Jackson Diner coming to University Pl.: what to expect?
Yes, exactly: the mugh tikka palakwala--which, btw, is not on the menu at University Place. (I took one for the team.)
Nantucket Bay Scallops
Blue Moon has Peconics for $23 at their usual greenmarket locations.
R.I.P. The Fairway Lobster Roll
I don't know: I've had Fairway's lobster roll perhaps a dozen times, and today's had the most lobster of any. Perhaps my preparer didn't get the memo. Or perhaps they've had a change of heart.
Sifton is from another planet (Tanoreen gets one star...where exactly did he eat?)
End of the BYO policy is a loss, however.
Brooklyn Fare Tasting Dinner
I certainly would have no problem paying something for glassware, or per bottle corkage if they have their license.
When I made the reservation, I had not appreciated how slated the menu is toward fish. It argues for an emphasis on white wine, with reds toward the lighter and crisper-- pinot noir, say, rather than cabernet, syrah or grenache. We'll manage, I'm sure.
Brooklyn Fare Tasting Dinner
I have a reservation in late March along with friends who like me are wine collectors. It sounds like we will get in under the wire. I agree that losing BYO would be discouraging, as the restaurant couldn't offer the sort of thing we would bring, especially not at a price we would pay. I wonder whether they understand how much of an draw BYO is.
Great new Indian restaurant in Park Slope
I also use Kinara for takeout, and am always pleased by the strong spicing. At my one visit to Balaka, I thought the food was too sweet.
Istanbul Park: New South Slope Turkish BYO
I haven't been there since my op, but if Jen likes it I'll be back soon.
Istanbul Park: New South Slope Turkish BYO
In the continuing search for local BYO's, I have now found Istanbul Park at 293 7th Ave, between 7th and 8th Streets (in the former space of No No Cajun and, before that, India House). Hot and cold appetizers around $5-6, entrees $8-20. There are various lamb and chicken kabobs, and some fish. The sigara boregi and eggplant salad were good, as were the gyro and lamb adana. Both entrees were served with rice, a roasted tomato, shredded red cabbage and onions. After tax and tip it came to under $20/person. Staff is friendly and helpful, and, for the byo'ers, the glassware is fine.
Pizza Dough
In the six plus years since the original post, I have tried Trader Joe's dough, which I didn't much like, but have been happy with the frozen from 9th Street Steve's C Town. I originally baked pizza on a cookie sheet, which came out a bit doughy. I got a stone, which makes for a crisper pie. But since the stone, unlike a cookie sheet, doesn't have a raised edge, melted cheese and excess oil slide off it onto the oven floor. I may go back to the sheet.
Anniversary Dinner near Coney Island/Brighton Beach
If Park Slope isn't too far there are several worthy candidates close to the F line.
Dinner rec, near Staten Island Yankees Stadium?
Its probably too late to help you, but under the same circumstances I enjoyed Beso on Schuyler Street. Four people shared maybe 8 tapas and wine.

Fairway's Lobster Roll - a report
I have sometimes gotten claw meat. I think its luck of the draw.
Sweet Melissa's new ice cream wing now open
The containers I saw were labeled "Bassett's", a Philadelphia brand.
What shouldn't I miss at Bklyn Fairway?
Good enough that I bothered to make a point of it
What shouldn't I miss at Bklyn Fairway?
If you're worried about calories, skip the chips.
What shouldn't I miss at Bklyn Fairway?
They are a great importer of olive oil. They will have bottles of perhaps 8 types open for sampling. Also high end anchovies, tuna, sardines, etc. Also, if you are there at a quiet time, get a lobster roll at the snack bar ($8!) and have it on their deck facing the harbor and Statue of Liberty.
And while you are in the neighborhood, get a Key Lime Pie from Steve's.
Any half-way decent Indian restaurants in Park Slope/Prospect Heights?
The last several times I've ordered from Kinera I've been struck by the forceful spicing. The food is not bland. By local standards, that goes quite a way.
Gargiulo's
I, on the other hand, enjoyed my visit last summer.

Palo Santo - some questions
Here's an idea: whoever wants to know can call the restaurant and ask for a list of dishes on the tasting menu. I believe they will be told it can only be provided in very general terms because the dishes vary from day to day and from party to party on any given day. But let them ask.
Palo Santo - some questions
It is South American, not Spanish, and while they are small plates, I wouldn't call them tapas. Many of the preparations have chillies, lime juice and red onion--I know this because if you sit at the bar, the prep work is done right in front of you.
Palo Santo - some questions
I had the tasting menu in February, We were told it is only served at the bar. It was 9 courses for $50. Wine pairings were $30. The courses vary with the party, ie other people at the bar when we were did not get precisely the same tasting menu. There were, as I recall, 3 seafood courses, foie gras, pork and beef and dessert. It was all very good. I'd certainly go back.
Red Hot Szechuan in Park Slope closed?
I asked one of the guys clearing it out what happened, and he replied "the lease."
Red Hot Szechuan in Park Slope closed?
The Tuesday Brownstoner reported the phones were unanswered Monday.
Palo Santo: Any recent visitors?
Went for the first time Feb 15 and had the tasting menu ($50) with wine selections ($30). A terrific, fun experience. Highly recommended.
