Seeking steak in Cambridge

It sounds like Boston may be a better choice than Cambridge. I've dined at all the chains - - including Capital Grille, and am looking for something unique to Boston. Any recommendation for the best (non-chain) steak house in Boston? Thanks.

Seeking steak in Cambridge

Sorry, I should have been more specific - - we are looking for a restaurant that serves excellent steak. Carty's response - - go to Boston - - is what I suspected. That Boston has many offerings, but not Cambridge.

Amalfi area- Where not to miss??

Would you mind giving the location of Lo Scoglio? We will be Sorrento-based for three nights later this month. We've been there before and have to confess that it is the only place in Italy where we feel challenged to find non-touristy places to dine. Any suggestions welcome! Thanks. Jane

Seeking genuine Italian in Providence

Yes, there are diverse regional cuisines in Italy, but that wasn't the issue I was raising with my original post. By "genuine" I meant an unpretentious restaurant serving simple Italian fare. My experience eating in many of the restaurants on the Hill is that they have grown increasingly "touristy" over the years, serving a broad range of mediocre dishes from all over the world, while pretending to be "Italian" restaurants. I don't want (badly executed) egg rolls or crepes in my Italian restaurant. A few good Italian dishes, whether they are risottos or farros from northern Italy or pastas from the south, is what I want in a "trattoria" here in America (the kind of place that is on every corner of every town in Italy).

Seeking genuine Italian in Providence

Thanks for the recommendations. I will give them a try and report back.

As for Casa Christine, yes, Christine was a "character" - - no doubt about it. Personally, however, we never had bad service, and the food was always very good.

Seeking genuine Italian in Providence

Seeking a replacement for Casa Christine (apparently now closed) in Providence. Unassuming venue, but with solid Italian fare. Have tried many of the places on Federal Hill, but found most to be spotty in service and food quality. Any suggestions welcome.

Seeking steak in Wilmington, DE

Sorry I was unclear - - I am seeking a restaurant (not a butcher). Thank you for the Firebirds suggestion (on Churchman's Road). I called and they said they opened in July. We will give them a try. Many thanks.

Looking for Bistecca alla Florentina in Florence....

Have had bistecca at Giostra on Borgo Pinti several times and never been disappointed. A neighborhood atmosphere, warm and welcoming. Excellent minestrone and risotto, as well.

Rome, New Year's Eve

Thanks for your response. The dinner at La Pergola is expected to be $1,100 Euros, apparently (per person). Even with dancing, etc., I have a hard time enjoying something so pricey. It is more than likely that it simply won't be worth the price tag, hence my search for alternatives.

Rome, New Year's Eve

I know this has been touched upon before, but requests and recommendations seem to have been limited to restaurants. We are looking for a complete dining/dancing/gala event for New Year's Eve (Dec. 31, 2008), with the only caveat being that the most important element of the night is, to us, the quality of the food. A decent band or great atmosphere won't compensate for less-than-stellar dining. We are staying at the Cavalieri Hilton and have heard some negative things about La Pergola, so we are reluctant to place our New Year's Eve "bet" on that, although it would be an obvious choice. Any suggestions (as well as further comments on La Pergola) would be greatly appreciated.

Seeking schnitzel in Vienna

Wanted to report back after our visit to Vienna. Followed advice of Sturmi and enjoyed a great meal at Beim Czaak. Thank you! Did not go to Figlmuller's. Had a reservation, but (a) could see schnizel being served and it didn't look impressive to us, and (b) line of tourists with guidebooks stretched down the road. Beim Czaak had no English menu (a great sign) and a delightful waitress happy to assist us in ordering. Appetizers, salads, breads, sides and desserts were all excellent. Would recommend without hesitation.

Seeking schnitzel in Vienna

We are seeking a geniune, non-touristy restaurant (more fine dining than casual) with great classic Austrian food, including schnitzel, of course. We are staying at the Hilton, but will go anywhere in the city for superior schnitzel in a place with some atmosphere. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks for the tip. Years ago there was a restaurant "1882 House" or something similar. Any idea if that is still around? I don't remember exactly where it was, just that it wasn't far from Easton.

Thanks. I've actually been to the Col. Blackington Inn and it was excellent. I've heard negative things about Luciano's in Wrentham. Any experience there?

Mac & Cheese - Can you freeze it?

I suggest wrapping prepared but unbaked mac & cheese in plastic wrap, then placing it in ziplock bags, before freezing. I've tried foil, wrap, etc., and find this combo fights freezer burn the best. Also, I put a crumb topping on my mac & cheese, but I don't add this until the final (baking) stage; it gets mushy if frozen.

If you are looking for a similar dining experience, but want to dine outside, you may want to consider the Sharpe Hill Vineyard, not far from Still River.

Seeking recommendations for best steakhouse in D.C.

Have now tried both Ray's. My fellow Chowhounds were right on target - - the Ray's in VA has zero ambience, but terrific steak. A great value. I preferred Ray's the Classics in Silver Spring, but only because the setting was nicer and the menu was more extensive. The quality of the beef was outstanding in both locations. Also went to Mortons while in DC (have been to pretty much all the chains: Ruth's Chris, Smith & Wollensky, etc.). I would put Ray's right up there with the best of the best, and when you consider that it is about half the price, I think that is an amazing value.

Seeking recommendations for best steakhouse in D.C.

In response to the question as to why I asked for "non-chain" restaurants: Please don't misunderstand me. I can (and do) eat at Mortons and Ruth's Chris here in CT. When I travel, I like to take the opportunity to find the undiscovered gem that I can't find in my backyard. For what it is worth, we dined at Mortons last Thursday and at Ray's the Classics on Friday. Mortons was, in our opinion, excellent (as always), but we felt Ray's delivered better value. Ray's bread, salads, steaks and desserts were (we felt) superior to Mortons. Sides were tastier at Mortons and steaks were just about as good, but overall, Ray's was better (and literally half the price).

Recommendations for Vienna, VA area?

These sound like great suggestions. I appreciate all of them, and I'll be sure to report back. For those in the Silver Spring area, we tried Ray's the Classics last weekend and it was excellent all around, from appetizers through desserts.

Recommendations for Vienna, VA area?

Will be spending one night outside DC. Any hidden gems in or around Vienna, VA / Tysons Corner area, or must we go to DC for decent dinner? Looking for upscale Italian or steak house (not chain). Thanks in advance.
