Bulk grains and beans?

Great! Does sprouts sell dried beans as well?

Bulk grains and beans?

Any recommendations on where to buy bulk chickpeas or quinoa etc? Preferably on the west side?

Recs on recs?

Thanks for the replies! Any recs for a great splurge night?

Recs on recs?

Hi all,

Heading up to SF for the first time and a friend recommended the following places. I was wondering what your take on them was!

- NOPA
- Blue Plate
- Limon
- Range
- Marlowe
- SPQR

And for bars/lounges, she recommended:

- Rye (two words: basil gimlet!)
- Bloodhound
- Minx
- Zeitgeist (lot of bicyclists/hipsters, but amazing beers on tap and great backyard patio area)

Hey, guys,

Thanks for the recs.

I ended up having an absolutely fantastic meal at Mare; one of the best I've had in recent memory. Their grilled baby octopus is exemplary, as is their mushroom spaghetti.

LA equivalent of Blue Hill at Stone Barns?

Hey, all,

Just wondering if you had any ideas about this:

I've been thinking a lot about Blue Hill at Stone Barns and whether or not LA (and its environs) could claim an equivalent.

The criteria here would be: a place with its own farm (preferably with the restaurant on the grounds) that grows/raises all of its own stuff. Obviously there's Gjelina with its farmers market menu, and of course French Laundry, but what else?

Perhaps we could broaden the criteria to: a very, very farmer's market driven menu?

Arg--so many places I want to return to and so many new ones to try! I think we'll definitely do Toro one night and then it's a toss up between Carmen, Scampo or Craigie for our second dinner.

Any good lunch recs? (Sadly we won't be around for Sunday brunch--the trip is Thursday to Saturday before we drive back to NJ.)

Are reservations necessary at any of these places?

Former Bostonite returning for two nights

Hi guys,

I lived in Boston for four years before moving to LA in 2006. I'm going to be spending three days and two nights in Boston in early June and was wondering what I need to try. I used to really like The Butcher Shop, Carmen in the North End, Grotto on Bowdoin Street, Great Bay back when it was still around (was sad to hear it closed).

I'm staying at the Ames, so maybe recs in the Beacon Hill area, but really am open to anywhere, since I'll be relishing the chance to walk around again (no taxis necessary when you're on a nostalgia walk).

I've heard good things about Meyers+Chang and Hungry Mother. Any ideas? I've lost touch with the food scene out there and since this is a special occasion (a triumphant return to the city I love), I'm not terribly concerned with price and what have you.

Thanks!

Ceviche Quality Tuna on the West side?

Had fantastic yellowfin tuna ceviche in Miami last week (it was cubed in very large chunks and served with avacado and mango and grapefruit...good lord it was good). Any ideas on where I might find some high quality tuna with which to make the recipe at home?

Fist time in Miami

Greetings, hounds,

Going to be spending a few days in Miami with friends before heading off to Key West for a long weekend. I only know the basics, like Little Havana, and even then, only vaguely. What must I do while in town?

Rec needed around 26th and 5th

Howdy,

A few of my work friends and I are in from LA for a few days for our show's premiere and we were looking for something great. Nothing insanely expensive (we're not network after all), but I was thinking anything from A Voce to more gastro pub.

Any thoughts?

Kickass sympathy food baskets?

Ben and Jerry's doesn't ship anymore, but found this site that has a pretty spiffy option: 19 pints of ice cream, one of each of every flavor they make. Nothing wrong with a little whimsy in a sympathy gift.

Kickass sympathy food baskets?

My good friend's mother died today a year after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Rather than send flowers, about 20 of our friends were thinking of chipping in for a really fantastic food basket. I figure we could easily spend between $100-200.

Does anyone have any suggestions about where I might look?

A Voce/Esca: still worth it?

Or how about Scarpetta for that matter?

A Voce/Esca: still worth it?

I'm going to be in New York for 72 hours in March, and am planning a family birthday dinner while in town. Anyone have an opinion on Esca or A Voce?

If negative, any recommendations in their places?

Where can I find Purslane?

I don't believe I've seen any at the west side farmers markets...unless I'm overlooking it.

Romantic/Fun Date Spot?

On this note, has anyone tried Tasca Wine Bar? I was thinking of trying that or Pace on Laurel Canyon Blvd.

Romantic/Fun Date Spot?

Anyone have any recommendations for a romantic date around Mid-Wilshire? We're both pretty open to any sort of food. Looking to spend under $100 for two. We just went to Lou on Vine and loved it. Anything in that realm would be perfect. Mostly I just want a place where the food and wine will be interesting and tasty enough and where we can sort of hang without being rushed out.

Pumpkin Picking

As fall approaches, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for good places to go pumpkin picking. Ideally this place would also have a little homemade pumpkin pie stand, farmer's market, etc.

Best Coffee in LA

The guys at The Funnel Mill in Santa Monica (Bway bt 9th and 10th) make an amazing cup of coffee. Not only are they obsessed with their sourcing and preparation (and their cup of coffee science lab), but they also will gladly talk to you about every last thing on their menu. It's a pleasure to drink their coffee.

Any suggestions for a good Catering/Burrito truck in West LA?

I can't recall the name at the moment, but there's a late night truck with amazing tacos al pastor in the parking lot of the Vons off Barrington and Santa Monica Blvd.

They also do catering.

Dinner in Ojai

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone out there had any recs for a nice Sunday dinner in Ojai. In the range of $30-70 a person or so.

First time in Santa Barbara

Also: between The Ballard Inn, The Hitching Post and Trattoria Grappolo, what are your thoughts?

First time in Santa Barbara

Thanks, guys!

What about the town of Santa Ynez? Is that too out of the way, or just not worth staying in?

First time in Santa Barbara

Narrowing things down further, I think we're going to stay in Santa Ynez or in one of the adjacent towns rather than Santa Barbara...

First time in Santa Barbara

Great, recs, everyone, thanks.

I think we're going to drive in early Saturday morning from LA, stay overnight, and then head back Sunday evening. So we'll do something like lunch, wine tastings and dinner on Saturday followed by breakfast, tastings, lunch and dinner on Sunday.

I think we'd like to spend most of our time in and around wine country more than downtown Santa Barbara, so a lot of these restaurant recommendations seem right on the nose.

Any recs for accommodations? Places nearish several good wineries?

Thanks again!

First time in Santa Barbara

I should also clarify: we are open to the Santa Ynez valley as well.

First time in Santa Barbara

Hi there,

Spending a weekend with a few friends in Santa Barbara--none of us have ever been there and I was wondering what you guys recommended in terms of restaurants and wineries.

God speed!

Last minute Village rec

Meeting a few friends for food/beers tonight around King/Hudson...any spots with tasty eats and solid beers?

Carmel by the Sea

Planning a weekend trip up there--anyone have any suggestions? I really enjoyed Casanova last time I was there.
