LA Chowhound staying Downtown (Sheraton) for week of meetings
Looks like lots of chains in the 'hood . . . Wanting to try local good food - the spots that are not designed for tourists. Friends are taking me to Aunt Pitty Pat's Porch for "authentic" Southern cuisine . . . other suggestions on that front ??
Disappointed to see Craft here has closed . . . but again looking for great food that is local . . .
Thanks

Guisados - new spot at 2100 E Cesar Chavez Blvd near Chicago . .. great tacos.
For Manta Ray soup - try El Siete Mares on 2118 N Broadway in East LA. . . they often have it as a special either at their main restaurant or the "stand" El Siete Mares Playita just a block away.
And check out a little place on 2510 E, CChavez just East of Soto called Antojitos Carmen. Fabuous flavors. They were a taco truck until about six months ago . .. the guisado tacos there especially deliciousl. (I'm a Bostonian married to a Mexican for 40 years. . . )

Sweet Strawberries in LA
I second Harry's Berries. Best anywhere . . . also available at Hollywood Farner's Market on Sat morning
Pasadena - Saturday luncheon for 30
Looking for a spot for a reasonably prized luncheon for about 30 to celebrate the birth of my granddaughter. Range of age in guests from 5 to 85. Not too loud. Cozy environment for family celebration. Mediterranean/Lebanese would be great, but not necessary.
BEST seafood/fresh lobster in LA - where?
Palm is probably the best choice currently. . . but the fact that it is broiled instead of steamed is main reason for toughness. Not true that native New Englanders prefer tiny lobsters - which are much more shell than meat. About 2.5 to 3 lbs - steamed is the best. Better to order a pair of those than a 6-pounder, for sure . . . And the problem with Sea Harbour (I would imagine) is that it is an Asian prep . . . Always looking for good steamed Maine lobster though . . .
fresh duck eggs?
Lily's at HFM sometimes has them. Hit or miss. But they are very delicious - like a more intense flavored chicken egg and - of course - larger. I would be very cautious about thinking the allergy would not carry over from chicken to duck. The protein in the white will be VERY smiliar
Korean BBQ in San Fernando Valley
Is Il Auk Jo open? Saw notice on Yelp that they closed about 6 months ago . . .
WHERE TO BUY HOMEMADE, AUTHENTIC TAMALES IN LA?
Liliana's and Los Cinco Puntos are great and I would add Sandra & Lolita's @5390 Whittier Blvd in Whittier

Places to buy fish?
As a fussy fish lover from Boston, by far the very best fresh fish I have found is at Hollywood Farmer's Market Sunday mornings at J&P Seafood. Ultra-fresh. Good variety and prices and Marilyn is so accommodating. Unbelievable. (Sort of at the "crossorads" of the market
Best Bargain Tasting Menu and Wine Pairing
Palate in Glendale. Price varies - but food for tasting menu usually around $45. Wine pairings can be tailored. And the food is spectacularly good.
Duck legs - where to buy in Los Angeles - moved from Home Cooking board
Second McCall's Meat & Fish in Los Feliz. Often in their case - but they can supply most anything with advance notice. .. .
Transplanted Boston foodies, I need your recommendations please
You set high standards! I grew up in Boston area - right near Wilson's Farm in Lexington - with an uncle working the fish pier and bringing us the freshest of fish. Closest to that kind of thing is Farmer's Markets. Check out Hollywood on Sundays and - if you can - Santa Monica on Weds. And BTW for FRESH fish for you to cook - the best I have found anywhere in 30+years living here is at the Hollywood Farmer's Market - J&P Seafood. Incrdibly fresh scallops, seabass, halibut, sole, salmon and sardines. Right "off the boat" and filleted by them the night before. As for Rubin's - I always go there when I visit Boston for the Romanian style pastrami. Langer's is close - nothing else in LA at all close. Ignore the guy below who compares Bea's Jewish pastry to Maria's. No comparison at all. And Nata's in Studio City is building a pretty good Portuguese menu - not Inman Square - but some good things. Also if Portuguese is a goal - some items on the menu at Alexis' in Northridge are very good Portuguese. Alexis is a Greek restaurant run by husband and wife chef team. Husband is Greek and wife if from Lisbon. . . .
AND SOnny McLean's in Santa Monica is a pub style haven for Boston sports fans. They have REAL clam chowder and even do Fried whole belly Ipswich clams - although the quality varies depending on who is cooking. But they feed all the Boston local sports games - from the Sox and the Pats and the Celtics - to BC football and basketball etc.
Welcome to the Left Coast!
What's Your Favorite Restaurant For Fish, near Studio City or Burbank?
Try Palate in Glendale. Menu changes every week - but always two or three fresh seafood to choose from - done perfectly
Induction cooktop
Many thanks to all for your insights. Definitely leaning toward induction - this was helpful.
Induction cooktop
Getting ready to finally do the remodel. Had been leaning toward high end gas cooktop like Wolf. Friend is urging that I consider induction instead . . . more efficient / easier to control / less polluting / less heat generating. Totally aware of the need for iron based cookware - but already use LeCreuset and cast iron . . . Would love to hear from those who use induction.
Best Farmers Markets!
Hollywood Sunday is the place for those of us who work weekdays. Go early for good selection and avoiding crowd. BTW J&P Seafood is the BEST fresh seafood I have found in LA anywhere.
Good source for medjool dates? (Pasadena area)
Excellent fresh dates for sale Hollywood Farmer's Market Sunday mornings . . . you might try one of the Pasadena Farmer's Markets, but I can't really say . . .
Los Angeles next weekend...help! narrowing down restaurants
If you are willing to go a bit past downtown (more East) - check out either La Serenata di Garibaldi or Moles La Tia for Mexican unlike what you can get in the Northwest. For the amazing delights of Mozza Pizza - the secret is to go in mid afternoon - after the lunch rush and before dinner. Excellent food. Check out Palate in Glendale, too. Focuses on what is fresh in the market with a new menu every week.
JERRY'S "FAMOUS" DELI on Topanga
Jerry;s has been inedible for some time! Brent's always a good option. Abe's in Northridge also pretty good.
Corned beef hash??? ANyone??!
I just looked at the online menu of John O'Groats. Salmon and veggie hash, but no corned beef . . .
LOKKING FOR THE BEST HANDMADE TAMALES IN L.A.
Try Sandra & Lolita's Tamales in Whittier // or Tamales Lilianas on Cesar Chavez Blvd ELA
JERRY'S "FAMOUS" DELI on Topanga
Oh yeah! Hideous food. Brent's Deli - or Abe's Deli near Norhdhoff and Tampa
Best torta in East L.A. area
Los Cinco Puntos - known mostly for their fresh made tortillas and masa - makes GREAT tortas as well.
