Did you go? What did you think?

Missed it last year, had the day circled on the calendar for this year. We had a blast. Agreed that it was a little crowded, but the weather held out, so really, who can complain.
Canoe's BLT - something so simple, prepared so well.
Splendido's Wago Beef Brisket "slider burgers"
Balluchon's Raw Milk Latte - although we are not allowed to talk about those...what happens at the picnic stays at the picnic.
Gilead Cafe's Peach-Half Oyster style dessert.

I agree that the different places were leaning towards pork, but if you remember that the "theme" this year was giving the direction to the producers, so if that is what was available and offered, then I'm happy to eat it!

Help for Food in Longmont, CO

Hey CW!

I'm going to be in Longmont, CO for work from the 6th till the 18th. Staying at the Radisson, near Twin Peaks Mall. Don't know how many free meals I'll have, but I want to check out the town. Can you give me some hints and clues on the best spots to eat. Looking for the true Chow-Finds. Spare me the chain restaurants, which I'm sure are all around the hotel.

Also, how about really good espresso???

Delicious and Sustainable?

Not really "downtown" but sequel at Yonge and Yonge Blvd (between Lawrence and York Mills) is doing wonderful things with sustainable practices. They use Bullfrog for power, offset 90% of their waste, and use environmentally sensitive cleaning products. They use Local Food Plus designated sources for produce and other products. Their meat and fish also comes from sustainable sources. We've had dinner there just as they started to introduce these new initiatives. Everyone was very pleased at the quality of the food along with the presentation.

Hope this helps!

Best Risotto in Toronto

Globe Bistro had an amazing Risotto when I went there last fall. It was a butternut squash risotto, definitely a hit. Normally something that I wouldn't order when eating out, but they hit one out of the park with that one.

23rd Birthday Party resto-night club suggestions?

What about Supermarket in Kensington? Food is quite good, will be within your price range and it's a awesome place to party once it switches over from restaurant.

Goji Berries (Toronto)

It's true that you get what you pay for in size, but if you soak them in water for a couple of hours or better yet over night, they plump right up and taste great.

Dinner tonight at Yonge and Eg

I'm in need of a last minute idea for dinner out tonight with the 'rents. They are back in town and wanting to head out for a bite to eat. Looking local, around Yonge and Eglinton. Was thinking Lolo or Coquine. Wondering if anyone has been to either of these places recently and could weight in.

Caramac chocolate bars in Toronto?

Try Dolce and Gourmando. If they don't stock it, it is something that she could probably get for you. They stock plenty of unique chocolates.

fresh healthy potted herbs

Was at the Brickworks market this morning. There were a couple vendors selling potted herbs and potted vegetables. Sizes ranged from single plants to multi-herb planters. Didn't notice prices, but they looked great.

Was also in Kensington a couple weeks ago and a few of the fruit shops had large displays of various herbs. Again of the single plant per pot variety, but many of them looked to be good quality.

50th birthday prix fixe

Lolo just re-opened on Yonge. They were on Mt. Pleasant. I believe that they have a really good (reviewed) prix-fix. I think there are a few Chowhounds who have raved about this place. The new location should hold 20 no problem. I also seem to remember that their P-Fix is around $25.

Least terrible dish at Spring Rolls?

Oh Spring Rolls...honestly there isn't much on that menu that is worth consuming, but my vote would be for the mango salad...sorry

The organic fruit market in Kensington, the name alludes me right now, has organic garlic from Argentina. While it's not quite as far as China, it's still carries a large carbon foot print. I believe that Loblaw at Yonge and Yonge Blvd. had Elephant Garlic that was either from Canada or the US the last time I was there.

Alternative to Terroni?

What about Lil' Baci. The menu isn't as big as Terroni, but the pizza is fantastic. Great casual atmosphere, nice little place. Not sure if they take reservations or not.

"Loblaw Great Food" - it ain't Wegman's

We've been to the Yonge and Yonge Blvd. location a couple times since the reno. While I agree with Embee that it could be better, it is a much improved solution to what was there. We were impressed by the receptiveness from the seafood department manager. We were looking for some more sustainable seafood to be carried at that location. While he didn't have all the answer, it appeared as if he was looking for us to ask for them to carry more sustainable offerings. Perhaps the suggestions will be put into place. I found that the produce was a bit expensive, but that the quality was quite an improvement from what was there before. While it's not Whole Foods, it's quite the improvement from what was. I say it's a step in the right direction.

Seaweed Salad at home...what am I looking for?

I've been hooked on the typical green seaweed salad that is served at most sushi joints. Most places call is Kaiso salad. The seaweed which I'm looking for is the almost neon green colored seaweed. It's longer and stringier than the typical seaweed featured in most miso soups. Any recommendations on what I'm looking for?

Gingerbread cake or loaf in toronto?

Oh Noodlhead I feel your pain. The Whole Foods in Cali do the same bread. Saran-wrapped and by the coffee, It`s amazingly good. I don`t know of any bakery that does it, but I do know that if you can get your hands on the Nigella recipe that it`s damn good, same texture and moisture...but it sure ain`t healthy.

Where to find Seaweed

Hi Chowhouds

Looking to find a place in Toronto where I can find seaweed suitable for making Kaiso Salad at home. Been addicted to it, and been ordering it every time I go out for sushi, but wondering if anyone has a reliable source for getting seaweed for home use.

Need Help - Pumpkin Energy Bars

Been having a craving for some pumpkin, random time of year, but after being disappointed by the pumpkin spice Clif Bar energy bars (lacking pumpkin flavor) I've been trying to search out a easy to make pumpkin energy bar recipe - using preferably low amounts of butter and more influence from oats. My teammate and I have come up with an awesome energy bar recipe which is basically:
3 cups rolled oats
1 can sweetened condenced milk,
1 cup chopped nuts/chocolate/dried fruits
1 cup coconut

we press it into a baking pan and voila wicked energy bars. Basically I'm hoping someone can help me adapt this into a pumpkin recipe using pumpkin puree, instead of the coconut....

I was thinking about swapping the milk and coconut for pumpkin puree and eggs, but think it will be way to wet. Any suggestions?

Farmers Market, Seneca, SC

Does anybody have any information about this market? Everything I find online seems to be copied from a year 2000 website. Wondering if it actually still exists and also if it only happens in January? Any help would be great as I was hoping to go tomorrow morning if it is still open/exists.

Foodie near Clemson for the next 2 months...

Hi Chowhouds. I'm a Toronto-Chow transplated onto Lake Keowee for the next 2 months. Looking for some help for searching out the following if it actually exists in Clemson/Seneca. First, any suggestions on must gets/must try while I'm here? I've heard and will be picking up some Clemson Blue Cheese as it gets good reviews. Anything else?

What I'm looking for is a good bakery, and more specifically a bakery that makes good baguettes. So far, Bloom Markets has been my shopping destination, the produce is good, seafood is better than average and they stock a good number of organic and natural foods.

Am I missing anything?

affordable chocolate covered espresso beans?

Hi All,

Got a 14 hour drive going tomorrow evening leaving from Burlington (I'm at Yonge and Eg. in Toronto). In need to affordable choc. espresso beans. Preferably not having to pay $8.00 for a tiny bag from somewhere like All the Fine Things or Whole Foods. Normally, love great chocolate, but in this case I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of quality for quantity at a good price. Suggestions?

Any suggestions on brand and location where I can purchase a decent, but not too expensive Pasta Machine? I would prefer a hand-turned one, instead of electric. I'm in Toronto.
