Tallahassee Vertigo

Ate lunch there again today. Again had the Triple Throw Down burger. It was cooked medium and while not really juicy, the meat was pink inside. They had the blue cheese this time. Good flavor all around.

Tallahassee

I'll second Angelette's. The menu is mostly cajun/creole. They are also worth a try on Tuesday nights. They do only specials that aren't on their regular menu. I've had some very good dishes then.

Piggy's is my favorite barbecue.

I've also enjoyed Coosh's Bayou Rouge, a second cajun place. Had a very good dish of fried catfish smothered with crawfish etouffe there a few days ago.

Tallahassee Vertigo

Went there for lunch today. Ordered a burger called the Triple Throw Down. It was described as a beef burger with bacon and blue cheese, horseradish sauce and caramelized onions.

They were out of blue cheese so gave me a choice of feta or white cheddar. I chose the white cheddar and ordered it without the horseradish sauce. I also ordered a mix of fries and onion rings they call half and half.

It came out with horseradish sauce, so I sent it back. The kitchen wiped off part of the sauce and sent it back out. I sent it back a second time and asked them to please get me a burger without the sauce. I could see the kitchen manager through the window and he didn't seem too happy to see my burger back for a second time. But he sent another out right away.

The flavor was good but the burger was cooked well done, gray and dry. Not at all juicy. Why is it so difficult to get a burger in Tallahassee that is pink and juicy? The bacon, cheese and onions were a good complement to the burger. The bun was tasty and held up to the toppings well.

The fries and rings were crispy and very good.

I know they are still working out kinks so I'll give them another try in a few days.

BACKWOODS BISTRO IN TALLAHASSEE

Had an early lunch there today.

They have creative rather than descriptive names for their pizzas. I ordered one called the Con. As opposed to the Pro. A 10" pie with white sauce with kind of a buffalo sauce mixed in. Chicken, bacon, mushrooms and pickled jalapenos on a thin crust. The only thing that seemed to come from a package were the jalapenos. Good flavor. The crust could have been a little crisper. Had to eat the middle part with a fork, but that's no big deal.

Also had key lime pie. Good flavor. Not too tart or too sweet. A little creamier than most.

Service was fine. A very pleasant college age young woman who had a good knowledge of the menu.

A tad bid pricier than your typical chain fare, especially the desserts, but not enough to deter me from going back.

Tallahasse Lunch - Driving 19 to Interstate 10 (Tampa to Mobile, AL)

I believe the only barbecue restaurant you'll find within a mile of I-10 is Sonny's. If you're willing to drive about 2.5 miles, you can get to Piggy's, which is my favorite barbecue in Tally. I'm kind of fond of their brisket.

Tallahassee - Up In Smoke

Went back for lunch yesterday. Had a pulled pork sandwich and it was much improved. The meat wasn't stringy and it had much better smoke flavor. Had onion rings for the side and they were good too.

Looks like they are making progress.

I'll try them again in a week or two.

Tallahassee - Up In Smoke

Went for dinner and had the four meat combo since I wanted to try a little of everything. I ordered brisket, 1/4 slab of spare ribs, pulled pork and hot sausage.

Starting with the best first, the ribs were well cooked, tender, but not overcooked and falling off the bone. Good sized serving, 4 bones. They had decent pork flavor, but not much smoke flavor.

The pulled pork was a bit stringy, not bad flavor, but again, no real smoke flavor. A good sized portion again. Enough to make a large sandwich.

The brisket was a bit dry, with no real bark and not a lot of flavor. Average sized portion, three thin slices.

They offer a choice of hot or sweet sausage. I ordered the hot. It was terrible. No heat, sweet or flavor and dry to top it off. The portion was tiny, a single link about 4 inches and split.

On the table were 3 sauces, mustard, sweet and regular. I had the regular on the pork and ribs. A thin tomato/vinegar sauce without much flavor. I tasted the sweet. it was a little thicker and sweeter. I didn't try the mustard.

The meal came with two sides. I chose onion rings and sweet potato fries. Each carried a $1.00 upcharge. They were both very good. Thick cut onion rings, with a coarse crispy breading. Not at all soggy, even at the end of the meal. The sweet potato fries were as crispy as you can get them, with good flavor.

The service was good, friendly and efficient. It appears these folks are decent restaurateurs, but not particularly well versed in barbecue

With a soft drink and tax, the tab came to 23 bucks and change, typical for a meal of that size.

2 stars for the barbecue + 1 for the sides and service.

More current Tallahassee restaurants

I've had lunch at Bayou Rouge twice since crewsweeper's post. Jambalaya the first time. It was very good. Quite authentic.

The second time I had the crawfish etouffe. It was outstanding. Creamy sauce with just the right touch of spice served over perfectly cooked rice. I added just a touch of Crystal hot sauce to warm it up a bit.

Coosh is friendly and attentive, making sure everything is to your liking.

Overall, two very good experiences.

More current Tallahassee restaurants

The last thread is now two years old, so lets start a new one.

I had lunch yesterday at Angelette's Cajun Kitchen.

A board search turned up no results so here are some details.

It's a cajun/creole restaurant located in the Publix shopping center at Capital Circle and Blairstone Rd. It is open only for breakfast and lunch. They serve breakfast during all open hours.

I had the crawfish pie. It's a crawfish etouffe stuffed fried french roll served over more etouffee. The rice was well cooked with a creamy sauce. Nicely spiced without too much heat.

It appears they don't yet have a website, but here is a link to their facebook page.

Piggy's BBQ on Capital Circle, Tallahassee

I tried the the three meat combo.

The ribs were tender, a little fatty, with good smoke flavor. The new vinegar based sauce had a little bite, and was a good complement to the ribs.

The brisket was also tender. It had a good smoke ring, about a quarter inch deep. Good flavor.

The white meat chicken quarter was tender and moist. I would have liked the skin to be a little crispier.

Overall, a good meal.

Piggy's BBQ on Capital Circle, Tallahassee

Thanks for the response browe. Your product is certainly worth what you are charging for it. A bigger sandwich, at a higher price of course, would be a welcome option. Forgot to mention I had the fries and they were well prepared. Not at all soggy like fries that aren't cooked when ordered can be. I would say you are off to a good start.

Piggy's BBQ on Capital Circle, Tallahassee

Not really complaining. As I said, it was not a bad value for the money paid. I'm a big guy and it takes a little more for my appetite. I would gladly pay more for a second sandwich. Overall satisfied and will return. The vinegar based sauce sounds good. Looking forward to trying a slab this weekend.

Piggy's BBQ on Capital Circle, Tallahassee

I ate there Monday and had the pulled pork sandwich. The pork was okay. It was served on a standard hamburger bun. A little on the smallish side. The sandwiches come with one side and a drink. Total bill including tax, about $7.50. Sauce was kind of generic, not bad but not great. I would like a little spicier sauce option.

Not a bad value for the money spent, but not a particularly filling meal. I would have liked to add a second sandwich, but they don't offer them a la carte.

I plan to try a slab of ribs this weekend and will post afterward.

Best Cheeseburger in Tallahassee (Hint: 5 is not in title)

I've lived in Tally for about two and a half years. I went on a search for the best ribs about a year and a half ago. Sadly, I didn't find anything really good. Jim & Milt's was near the bottom of the barrel.

Maybe I need to give their burgers a try.

Lackluster Tallahassee

Is Wilson's still open? I went by there twice a month or so ago during regular business hours and it appeared to be closed.

Tallahassee, where is best Chinese?

I've only been in Tallahassee for about eight months and have eaten at three Chinese buffets. King Buffet on Apalachee Parkway wasn't very good. Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant at Apalachee and Capital Circle was nearly inedible.

China First is pretty good. Certainly the best I've had in Tallahassee so far.

Tallahassee Barbeque

Shane's serves strictly baby backs covered with a vinegar based sauce. No real smoke flavor. Fairly tender. They had two other sauces available. One labeled spicy and one labeled hot. I tasted the hot. It had a little heat to it, but not scorching.

I had a half rack with fries and corn on the cob for the two sides. The half ear of corn was kind of mushy. They served a huge basket of fries and they were pretty good.

I might eat there again if I was in the neighborhood but certainly wouldn't drive across town like I would for really good ribs.

Tallahassee Barbeque

I'm fairly new to Tallahassee. Been here about six months. Lately I've been trying to find decent ribs without a lot of luck.

I tried to go to King's a few days ago. It has closed and the phone has been disconnected.

Mr. T's has opened a restaurant on South Monroe. The ribs there were okay at best. A little tough.

The ribs at Jim and Milt's were very tough and very little flavor.

Wilson's was pretty good. Tender with a pretty good crust and flavorful rub.

Famous Dave's and Shane's Rib Shack both have typical chain fare.

I'm going to try Gertie's later this week and hopefully Tiny's soon.
