Nomad - to Chicken or not to Chicken

I, unlike everyone on the planet, was underwhelmed by the chicken specifically, and NoMad in general... but you can't go there and NOT get it, can you?

La Toulousaine: Superb Baguettes in the Carb Corridor

"Carb Corridor"? When did Chow become Zagat?

Humm and Guidara's Nomad

I generally find Chowhound to be a fairly dependable source of opinion, but this is an odd case of mass hysteria. With the possible exception of the fruits de mer, every dish was unexceptional . The tagliatelle was stridently bright, with any crab flavor lost under the sour, one-note sauce. The chicken was ok, though the "crispy" skin was flaccid by the time it got to table and the stuffing had a texture that reminded of a newspaper left out in the rain...the fricassee of dark meat was tasty, but I'm looking for something a touch more rarefied than "tasty" when laying down 80 clams for a chicken. Etc.

And that's not even going into the service...which I can at least say was friendly.

This is a place to go if you want to tell your friends you ate two tables away from a famous fashion designer. If you want to eat some interesting, well-executed food, you have a plethora of alternatives in the city...and most at half the price.

Humm and Guidara's Nomad

My dining companion nailed it: glorified first-class airplane food (and not all that glorified). And wildly overpriced. Service was definitely rough in spots. Though I suppose the point of the place is to see-and-be-seen. Honestly, the food wasn't even worthy of deeper analysis. I'm completely non-plussed by the raves above...a case of the Emperor's New Clothes, I'm guessing.

Is It OK to Complain About Tiny Portions?

While the question of value is relevant in restaurants generally, who goes to a resto with mains bobbing at the $30 line and expects to strap on the feedbag? You (usually) don't go out to eat simply to fill your belly, and that $26 is paying for more than the grocery bill.

(That said, I just recently complained about a portion size...and I emailed the chef-owner, as well...so there you are...)

Updated Balkan Recs?

I'm sometimes dumbfounded to read posts about restos I've been to...I find Kafana to be a solidly mediocre experience. Been there thrice since it opened (live around the corner), and have tried over half the menu...items like grilled pork chops are, well, grilled pork chops (if you like your pig well-done and rolled in salt)...but food commonly comes out luke-warm, and some dishes I wouldn't let escape my kitchen, let alone ask someone to pay for them (the lamb/spinach stew was a gloppy mess). The waitstaff is uniformly pleasant to look at, but is sometimes surly (my first time, my table disappeared from the radar as soon as it was clear we wouldn't be buying a bottle of wine) and often clueless: the last time, our server was cheerful and chirpy, but had no idea about the menu and wine list (one example: she had to go ask the chef what the specials were...good thing he was nearby, lounging at the bar and chatting with friends as insufficiently heated dishes came out of his kitchen)...I really wanted Kafana to be good...but if this is how they prepare and serve food in Serbia, I'm afraid Belgrade is getting crossed off my list of dining destinations...(also, not particularly cheap, considering the level of sophistication...)

Thoughts or Recs for The Redhead?

I think maybe I went to the wrong Redhead...yes, the bacon peanut brittle is nothing but peanuts and bacon, with occasional toffee-like bits lurking about: nothing brittle-y about it (I'm afraid we have finally arrived at an era where you can sprinkle bacon on carpet tacks or golf balls and call it an app), and egit's comment on it is on the money...the coat on what was advertised as fried chicken was aggressively, nearly inedibly salty without much other flavor, and biting through it revealed a terribly dry piece of white something or other (it might have been chicken)...the cauliflower bread pudding sounded really interesting, but was ho-hum, more like a frittata you'd see passed at a catered reception than anything else...had something else unmemorable...and the bartender had the TV blasting throughout the meal...the cookies they gave us for being good sports were decent, though...won't be going back.
