Providence Coal Fired Pizza has opened on Westminster St. downtown. Anyone checked it out?

Bread Pudding at Pane e Vino (Providence)

My husband and I both love the bread pudding at Pane e Vino. This weekend I plan on trying to recreate it at home.

In addition to the flavor it has a texture that I find more appealing than many bread puddings. Maybe because of the type of bread they use.

Anyone have any insights on what makes this version so special? Type of bread? Liquid to bread ratio? Flavoring? Etc?

Thanks!

Just noticed that The American opened in what I presume is the previous Everyman space. Not sure how long it's been up and running, but I've heard zero chatter about it. Anyone been?

Best Seafood Dishes in RI?

The creole shrimp at Loie Fuller is addictive.

Where Daily Bread used to be (Broadway, PVD)

They're turning it into an "upscale men's salon" - their words, not mine.
They also seem to have a stop work order from the city, which they are ignoring.

New Year's Eve in Providence

Has anyone had a great restaurant experience in Providence on NYE?

Which places are doing something special? La Laitere looks like an interesting option.

Recommendation for Restaurant Gift Certificate

Hi ATL Chowhounders,

I have never been to Atlanta and know next to nothing about the food scene there, so hoping for some local input.

My sister and and boyfriend just moved to Atlanta, fresh out of grad school and with limited budgets. They love to eat out, so I was hoping to get them a couple of $50 gift cards for Christmas.

She loves Top Chef and Richard Blais, so I was thinking Flip Burger Bar for one, but am at a loss for the other.

Some additional info:
-they eat anything, so no cuisine restrictions
-would like the $50 to cover at least the majority of two entrees/two cocktails
-preference for restaurants where I can order the certificate online and have it shipped to me
-bonus points for places convenient to the Lindbergh metro stop

I saw Tap recommended on a recent thread - looks like it's part of a bigger restaurant group and that their gift cards are valid at a variety of places, which is kind of nice.

Thanks!

Disaster!

Congress Tavern opened on Orange St. downtown. Stopped in Sunday night for a few beers and tried some of the apps:
-homemade chips - very good
-lobster nachos - kind of a weird concept, but there were generous with the lobster
-wings - pretty standard

All in all, solid pub food, but not sure it really fits the gastro pub billing.

Best Providence Dinners These Days>>What do you think of My List?

Don't miss the cajun shrimp! the sauce is addicting!

dinner in Wakefield, RI?

Crazy Burger would be a good veg option, they have a cute patio out back, but no view. Turtle Soup is right on the water in Narragansett, and can have a great view depending on the table you get. The deck at the Coast Guard House has a great view, but the food is forgettable at best. You're better off going there for a drink on the early side. These places are all in Narragansett.

In Matunuck you've got Matunuck Oyster Bar - great seafood food, and view of the pond where they grow their oysters. Expect a wait, it's a popular spot. Skip's dock is also fun - you can watch the fishing boats come and go from Pt. Judith.

Anyone tried the Newport Cruise Co's Majestic Dinner Cruise in Newport?

oops, forgot the link: http://www.newportexperience.com/SchoonerAurora.php

Anyone tried the Newport Cruise Co's Majestic Dinner Cruise in Newport?

A professional group that I belong to chartered the Schooner Aurora last summer. They'll provide a lobster boil dinner, which includes a cruise on the boat afterwards. The food was very good for a catered event - simply and freshly prepared.

The cruise was breathtaking.

The Elusive Pizza Strip

A bad pizza strip is truly nasty. If they're not fresh they can get really soggy, and obviously since they're only sauce and dough you need to have great versions of both to succeed.

A good pizza strip (I can only vouch for Calvito's in Wakefield and Narragansett) with a nice bite to the crust and a tangy sauce can be pretty darn satisfying!

What are your Block Island restaurant recommendations for the summer?

The peanut butter mudslide is practically a meal. And if you have more than one, you might find yourself rolling down the hill.

HEALTHY Providence Area Take-out

The new AS200 spot (I think it's called (F)ood) - has a very healthy looking menu. I have yet to try it, but was actually considering it for tonight. You can even bring your own reusable containing for them to pack your take-out it.

Worst of Rhode Island

How about Spain of Narragansett? People seem to think it's the only high end option in the area (ok, there aren't many options), yet I've never had a good meal there.

Professional Dinner Event - Providence

Looking for a place to host a sit down dinner for 50-60 people in Providence. Price should be in the $50pp range not including alcohol and before tax and tip.

Already considering:
CAV
Local 121
Parkside

Ruled out Bacaro, Gracie's, and and Mill's Tavern as too expensive.

Any other good suggestions?

Newly ENGAGED!! Please recommend best, well-priced caterer in Rhode Island ....

We had our wedding in the Towers 5 years ago and used West Bay Gourmet. They did a wonderful job with stations for dinner - we wanted an international flair and did one asian, one south american, and one traditional (at my mom's insistence). They also did some really fun passed apps with a seafood focus - paper cones of clamcakes, etc. Our friends still talk about the food - it was fantastic. WBG was the first caterer that I visited and when I went to others with the same requests most were significantly more expensive - one told me I was trying to buy a rolls royce with a ford escort budget! I have seen mediocre reviews of WBG occasionally, and agree that they are not nearly as good with their plated sit-down dinners, but for a station style wedding, I could not recommend them more highly.

We bought all of our liquor at Haxton's in Warwick (they let you return what you don't use) and WBG provided us with a bartender. I think we paid a few $ per person for his time, glassware, mixers, etc. It worked out great and allowed us to provide an open bar at a reasonable price.

Looking for a really good grinder in providence....

Yes, it has reopened as Hudson St. Deli. They have updated the menu, but one of the items is "The Hudson Market Italian".

Fun Dinner for about 30 (adults/kids) around Warwick, RI

Rick's Roadhouse (http://ricksroadhouseri.com) would probably be a good bet. Saw a group of about 30 kids & adults (a hockey team?) in there a couple of weeks ago. They seemed to be handling it well. It has a fun BBQ atmosphere, and while it' s not exactly a sports bar, but if there's a big game on they project it onto the wall.

Can you get fresh seafood off the docks in Point Judith?

Galilee and Jerusalem are literally a stone's throw apart, but separated by the channel that allows vessels into Salt Pond. You cannot walk between them, and to drive around the pond takes about 20 minutes. If you are willing to drive from Galilee to Jerusalem, Jim's Dock is a cute waterfront restaurant. There are docks on both sides, am you may be able to buy seafood directly from the boats, but we usually end up at either Champlin's on the Galilee side or Skips Dock on the Jerusalem side.

New Year's Eve in RI?

Local 121 might be a good bet. Decent upscale food and depending on the night, two dancing options - upstairs in the taproom and downstairs in the speakeasy. Nothing specific posted about NYE on their site yet.

Dinner & Dessert for Day-trippers

Ouch, Public is closed for a private event on Saturday night. Any suggestions for something similar?

Dinner & Dessert for Day-trippers

Taking my parents on a day-trip to Manhattan on Saturday and am responsible for planning dinner (for my 30th birthday). My husband and I lived there several years ago, but on student budgets, so we're really not too familar with the restaurant scene.

I'm looking for someplace with adventurous modern american food that's not too much of a scene (or too formal, we'll be having dinner after walking around all day). I really like the menu at Public, but most of the reviews seem to be about brunch or Sunday Supper.

Any options about Public for dinner on a Saturday or suggestions for alternatives?

Also, we'll be heading out of town through Grand Central Station, so any dessert suggestions in that area would also be appreciated!

Cheap Eats, Rhode Island

Resurrecting this thread for a worthy addition…

Tried out Dakar restaurant in CF last Friday night. Being new to Senegalese food we weren’t quite sure what to order, but our waiter pointed us in the right direction. After hearing one lamb dish (Dibbi) described as a man’s meal, my husband made his decision. I finally settled on Chebujenn, a fish and rice dish. Our food came out quickly and portions were generous. My husband enjoyed his lamb, but the fish and rice dish was a standout. The spicy rice was subtly flavored with the fish and accompanying vegetables. The vegetables, which included carrots, cabbage, and yucca, also really adsorbed the flavors of the dish. I believe the fish was striped bass, but I neglected to ask whether it changes. I also tried the ginger juice, which was well worth the $3 if you’re a ginger fan.

I believe the most expensive entrees were $10 and the apps were around $5.

Prix Fix in Providence

A recent issue of Providence Monthly listed lots of Prix Fix options in and around Providence. Chez Pascal, Bravo, Rue d'Espoir, New Rivers, Dewolfe Tavern... to name a few.

Any recommendations based on Prix Fix menu alone?

Providence or Greater RI: day-caught seafood

Matunuck Oyster Farm has a stall at some of the farmer's markets around Providence. I've seen them at Hope High School on Saturdays and the Armory on Thursdays. The have littlenecks, steamers, oysters and lobsters.

Soup dumplings (XLB) in Providence Proper?

I've had them at MuMu on Atwells Ave.
