Breakfast near Sutter st between Larkin and Hyde

It's not that the service is bad, it's that the head waitress has the personality of canker sore.

Coming to SF mid Oct

There is one good place north on Van Ness called Ya-ya. I think it's iraqi. It's unique and very good and not too pricy ($12-18 for an entree). Check it out and let us know what you think.

Broklyn Lager?

Toronado is a great bar, but it isn't the solution to all of our beer problems. California, especially northern california, has a very particular beer aesthetic which almost all the bars around here cater to. Toronado is no exception, and while they do have a good selection, their beers tend to be close to this california, hoppy, spicey, dry mouth, occasionally poorly balanced type of beer.

Beer Geography

I moved to San Francisco about a year ago and the beer here is just too hoppy. From what I can piece together from some foggy memories of Portland, the beer there was nice and malty and dark and wonderful. Of course, I still love the hearty beers from my home in New England (Did anyone out there get a taste of the Smoked Lager that Sam Adams was brewing a few months ago). From what I can tell, beers from the middle of the country tend to be on the light side for my taste. Would anyone out there like to speculate on the cause of vastly different regional beer tastes? Can I get some sypathy for being stuck here in SF drinking hopped up beer while soon my friends back east will get to trudge to the pub in the snow for all those great porters and stouts and lagers.

Albona

I walked by Albona on Francisco Street in North Beach a few weeks ago. A really nice guy who was standing outside tried to draw me in, but I was on my way elsewhere. It looked interesting. Has anyone been there?

Two French Places on Geary

There are two french places on geary near 6th or 7th street. One has a really dirty exterior that appeals to me. Has anyone tried either of these? What's the dish?

Ginger Ale, Root Beer, Sarsaparilla.

I'd like to here about all fizzy root drinks. Including Dandelion and Burdock.

Chinese Doughnut / Greasy American

I've noticed lots of places around town where you can get doughnuts / other chinese baked goods, chinese food and cheap american dishes (hamburgers, bacon + eggs etc.). I think that one near Hyde and California will deep fry hot dogs for you. Has anyone ever eaten at any of these places? Should I steer clear or are these places somehow justified.

Ginger Ale, Root Beer, Sarsaparilla.

Where's the best of each? Beach Chalet brews there own ginger and root beer and they are just OK. The supermarket across the street (are you in the know?) sells some good, strong ginger ale with a penguin on the lable. I'm especially interested in any local brew pub doing their own versions of these oft overlooked beverages. Also, if anyone has tried to brew their own, I'd be interested in stories / tips.

Where to get an Arnold Palmer drink in the Bay Area?

I agree, the lemonade flavors the ice tea, not the other way around. Also, good APs should be served in a mason jar and are best enjoyed on a shady porch.

Challah in San Francisco

Where can I get a good Challah in SF for some new year celebrations tonight? So far, I've been underwhelmed by the selection of jew food here in San Francisco (bagels, corned beef, matzo balls etc.) Am I going to have to travel back to South Florida for a good knish?
