Midtown breakfast ideas. Please help!

Any favorite places for breakfast (weekdays) in Midtown? Ideally in the west 40s or 50s? Most interested in American-style large breakfasts (not hotels, please).

Broadway East, LES (review)

Yes, I've been there 3 times. I don't know anything about a chef change but I ate there again just last weekend. I was very pleased the other times, but by far the best was definately last week. We had vegetarian appetizers but seafood entrees, Atlantic Bay scallops, and salmon. They had a little A/C problem while we were there, so it was a little warm. but then it got fixed eventually. The desserts were so good. I was also so grateful that it's easy to have a conversation there. I hate noisy restaurants (i.e. Blue Water Grill) BTW, have you seen the review on Timeout? Broadway East got a really great one from them.

Broadway East, LES (review)

I was so thrilled with my meal there last week that I wanted to tell fellow foodies. Surprisingly, there are only a few old reviews on Chowhound, so maybe people haven't yet discovered this special place. Every dish was so delectable that we actually felt a certain vague sadness as we finished each of them. I can't remember when I last felt this way.
But anyway, although this is a vegetarian restaurant we never had the feeling that we were sacrificing taste for healthfulness ( we often feel this at other vegetarian/vegan places). One could tell that that the chef took painstaking care to ensure exquisite deliciousness. The place is beautiful and very conducive to easy conversation. Although it was totally packed when we went, there was no problem at all talking without raising our voices.

For details on what we ate, just ask.

Need to find Sutter Home's Mascato wine

Which wine shops in downtown Manhattan carry Sutter Home's Mascato wine? I have been frustrated in my search so far.

Dinner at L'Ecole

Always have had a great experience at this place. Also, try the fabulous Tortulli (?) Prosecco if you like your sparkling wine on the sweet side.

broadway east for birthday dinner?

Hi Karen,

Ate there last Friday. Really liked the baby cauliflower fritto.., the golden beets tartare, the coconut tempeh over whipped potatoes, and the salmon over Ethiopian lentils ( a special that night). There were three of us so we tried eachothers' dishes. My brother liked the Peking Duck tofu, but I wasn't so crazy about it since I'm used to the real thing in Chinatown. Also, the winter green salad (not sure what it's called) was good. We were too full to have dessert. The waitress was very attentive, but not hovering. Also, really liked the music they had.. Hope you have a great time!!

Forgot to add: Broadway East also has long tables that in my view would be perfect for large groups - such as your birthday group. But I think you would need to reserve ASAP as it is full on recent weekend nights

broadway east for birthday dinner?

Just ate at Broadway East last Friday night. We were very pleasantly surprised that vegetarian can be so delicious. It's also great that there are several non-veg options- which my husband took- and he loved the salmon over Ethiopian lentils. My coconut tempeh over whipped potatoes was scrumptious, and the appetizers were delicious and sizeable, as well.
I think this place would be great for a birthday party, as long as the boys wouldn't get too, too rowdy. Otherwise, it's beautiful, elegant- but very comfortable and casual.

Hope you have the birthday party there and please report back to us!!

Blue Water Grill - Simply Awful!

Had the misfortune of eating at the Blue Water Grill downstairs last Friday night. Despite reservations for an early dinner for only 2 people, we were kept waiting for more than 45 minutes. I wanted to leave but my friend wanted to stay, so I was stuck. The noise was simply unbearable - had to insert ear plugs in order to filter out the high decible racket to decifer what my friend was saying during the meal. Food was mediocre. Couldn't wait to get out of there. So much money for such a tortuous evening! Why do people rave about this place??

Any chance to avoid MSG headaches in Chinatown?

Help! I live near Chinatown and love Chinese food. But I often get headaches and can't sleep from the massive amounts of MSG used.

Do you know of any Chinatown places that tend to use less MSG?

Ming Dynasty for Sunday dim sum?

How is Ming Dynasty (East Broadway in Chinatown) for Sunday dim sum? How does it rate compared to Golden Bridge, for example? How crowded does it get at around 11AM? We;ll have a party of 4.

Really good, LES, inexpensive non-Asian restaurant, dinner?

I guess my upper limit is Menu Pages' $$, or about $15 and lower for entrees. Also, the EV would be too far since I'm located pretty far south of Delancey.

Looking for a place on a weeknight on the LES where you can hear yourself talk, and where you don't have to wait too long to get a table for 4. Any possibilities?

I would like to try this bakery since I live on East Broadway. I know the orange awning one you mean, but where exactly is the other one? Is it on East Broadway, next to Weilgas Locks?

Need an alternative to Peking Duck House

I don;t understand why so many people seem to love the Peking Duck House on Mott street. It has always seemed too touristy and expensive for me. Do any of you have any favorite places in Chinatown for Peking Duck? Since I live on the outskirts of Chinatown, I'd much rather eat down here, than go uptown for Peking Duck.

I usually choose from the baked goods on the side, rather than the pastries at the counter. I like the raisin and lemon twist roll (that's what I call it, anyway)
