Looking for fishmonger in Calgary
Thanks for the replies. The board comes through for me again!
Looking for fishmonger in Calgary
C'mon folks. Need some help. Is there such a thing as a fishmonger in Calgary or do you call that the local Superstore?
Interesting Wedding Locations in Toronto
It's been six years since our wedding at the Berkeley Church. I brought in my own caterer and even back then (this was during the SARS scare, too), we ended up beyond $100/person. Advantage: it's right downtown and within walking distance/quick cab ride to hotels for our out-of-town guests. We were also able to have the ceremony, picture taking and dinner in the same venue. If you go this route, get yourself the best caterer possible. It's what makes or breaks it.
good fancyish lunch place in gay village?
Glad to hear it's still there and that you enjoyed the food. I must go revisit that old haunt in the near future.
King and Jarvis?
The Marche at BCE is open so if you are coming off the King subway station, you might want to swing by there to grab something first.
good fancyish lunch place in gay village?
Perhaps this is the subject of another post, but maybe one of the locals on this thread can enlighten me: is Focaccia still there on Hayden and will it be appropriate as a recommendation? I used to work nearby and loved that place.
Birthday cake
Try:
Celestin on Mount Pleasant never disappoints.
Nakamura in J-Town (Steeles) has amazing cakes as well.
Enjoy.
Birthday cake
Hi eddy. How far will you travel to pick one up and can you narrow down what kind of cake you want? I have a list of tried and true spots I buy from.
Well-priced Indian
By catering you mean, pick up from them, and serve it elsewhere? Or do you mean you want to bring in a party of 20 to the restaurant but pre-select your own menu for a privately catered event?
Either way, I think you should add Tiffin Restaurant (Ellesmere just east of Victoria Park) to your shortlist. Excellent, excellent food. We used to eat there every weekend and my son at age 8 months tried his first naan from there. They also sell Indian sweets (barfi, gulab jamun, etc.) by the weight. The restaurant decor and location itself is nothing to write home (inoffensive generica in a non-descript strip mall) but the location might be more convenient for you than Little India.
Incidentally, this strip mall is quite the United Nations stop: sushi on one end (Korean owners, I think) and Hakka on the other. In between you have a Filipino cafe-type store, Chef George (check out his fruit carvings -- always a big hit at my events), a Filipino grocery store, a hairdresser (does intricate braidings), a Middle Eastern store with take-out food that I've been meaning to try, and of course, Tiffin.
Guilty Pleasures?
Except for the gravy-guzzlers noted above, I say ditto, ditto, ditto.
Oh, and the Goof chicken balls with the sweet and sour sauce over the sodium starch otherwise called fried rice.
And, one more artery-clogging addition: chicharon (basically, deep-fried fat covered in msg) from one of those Latin American markets at Kensington market.
Lemon Tarts in TO
LOL. I often mistakenly call them Attitudes, too, based on the service I used to get with the previous owners. This most excellent bakery is actually called Altitude and yes, their lemon tarts and key lime tarts are awesome.
Dying for Thai

(Toronto) looking for a cozy coffee shop
In the Beach area (or Beaches) , Queen Street and Beech, is The Remarkable Bean (beside the Fox Theatre). No jazz but nice laid back atmosphere and chess sets on the tables. Great treats, too, and open late.
Sushi restaurants with REAL fresh wasabi?
A friend said to me that real wasabi, ounce per ounce, is worth more than gold. There's also a snobbery about the stuff. Purists will say that real wasabi comes only from Japan and that products from other countries (including Canada) are inferior.
One thing about real wasabi... if it was the real stuff, you will only get a little of it at a time, because the potency dissipates very quickly, i.e. 15 minutes. You will need to get it replenished often while you are eating.
athens bakery - danforth
There is also an Athens on Victoria Park between the 401 and Sheppard. It's in a most unlikely place... a strip mall on the east side of the street across from Enbridge. Same Athens quality, same wares, but you can actually find parking! The bougatsa is my favourite.
Sweet Bliss Indeed!!
What we found *was great* at Sweet Bliss was the double-crust lemon pie. The crusts (both upper and lower) were flaky and tasty, and the lemon filling was like a creamier version of the lemon torte filling that Verveine used to serve. Had some good tangy zest, but balanced out nicely with the cream. So head to Altitude for cinnamon buns for breakfast and top of dinner with the pie from Sweet Bliss.
Sweet Bliss Indeed!!
We *used* to call them "attitude" as well a couple of years ago. I had assumed that they had changed hands since, because the service on weekends is now friendly, polite and helpful. Sometimes one of the young girls (I assume part-time-student-type-staff) are a little clued out or under-caffeinated, but there is a decided lack of snark on the premises these days.
stampede pancake breakfast
Visiting Calgary during Stampede week. First time for my husband and son. Who puts out a great stampede pancake breakfast? I'd love to introduce my family to this fine Calgary tradition!
Great Restaurant in Toronto - Celebration Meal, family from London UK
Yes, but good luck trying to get a booking now...
Anniversary Dinner
Hi Wil. Are you looking for someplace in Markham or downtown? How far are you willing to commute?
kebabs (east end)
Here's a couple of non-butcher alternatives in the event you want to try something a little different:
On Ellesmere near Pharmacy, there's a middle eastern shop in the strip of mall anchored by China Cottage (Hakka food). They have good looking kebabs that you might want to try.
For Asian-inspired ones, try Mayette's on the Danforth just east of Pharmacy. She makes a Filipino barbecue, as in pork satays that are very tasty. Call in the order first since she is more of a restaurant. I do know she sells the satays because I've ordered it myself.
Good value caterer in Toronto?
What part of town are you in? If you are on the east side, I can recommend someone who catered my husband's company party. Also, are you talking a sit down service here or just food stations?
Organic Produce Delivery
I just got a flyer in the mail the other day for Mama Earth Organics (www.mamaearth.ca). They say they are for the Beach community so depending on where you are, you might or might not get delivery.
The only other one I know is Green Earth Organics (www.greenearthorganics.com). The thing with this one is that part of their profits go towards supporting Greenpeace so depending on how you feel about that, it might be another option.
I am looking for a delivery service, too, but this is as far as I got.
Good luck, and please share with us what you find out.
New Upper Beach Organic Bakery
Update on this: it looks like the bakery is no longer. Can you believe it?
I bumped into the owner who said that she was too exhausted to continue running the retail part of the place.
Pho: Financial District/St. Lawrence
Sorry, hmclean. I think you are out of luck. Nothing in these parts other than the food court ones.
Peppadews in Jars?
Try the South African shops, ie. Baxters on Sheppard near Bayview. I believe there's also a big one in Port Credit. Just can't remember the name of the shop.
I got several jars from the chef of the now defunct Star breakfast joint on Queen East. And you're right, they are awesome.
What wine with Indian?
Try Kingfisher beer (Most thrilling chilled). :-) No, seriously... I watch this post with interest because we have never found a good match.
