Why is pour-over coffee better? [Split from Boston board]

This one particular rule caught me....
Babbe's Rule* of Fifteens:

a) Green (unroasted) beans should be roasted within 15 months of harvest, or they go stale.

Of course there are exceptions to the rule. This coffee manufacturer has been doing this for 80+ years by storing their coffee bean either for 5 or 8 years before roasting them. http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/food/indonesia-coffee-factory-still-roasting-after-80-years/417260

Yellow watermelon in San Francisco?

Thanks.

I found yellow water melon at Ranch 99; it's about 49 cents/lbs, seedless. They have a Taiwan variety but not seedless.

Yellow watermelon in San Francisco?

I recently tried yellow watermelon while traveling to Asia, it was delicious. Where can I find yellow watermelon in San Francisco Bay Area?

Otak otak in SF?

I prefer Bay Leaf vs Jayakarta.
If you're visiting Bay Leaf, try their "Ayam Penyet".

Hainan Chicken Rice or Khao Man Gai Recommendations in the Bay Area?

I'm not in their delivery zone either, would be interested to know if they'd allow pick up or meeting point in the area they have.

It looks like the chicken rice now has a soup; previously at Kopitiam they don't serve it w/ soup. Their facebook page has some pictures.

Kopitiam in Lafayette Closing

From the facebook post, looks like the chef is now looking for a restaurant to open.

Gan Zha Jiang Mian @ Yu Yu in Dublin

Try Chinese Schezuan in Pleasanton, in the corner of Hopyard and Valley ? I've been to Yu Yu as well as Chinese Schezuan; on both Gan za zang and zam pong I prefer Chinese Schezuan. They also make their noodles.

Cousin Cafe (HK style food), Newark report w/ pics

Is this cafe has any relations w/ the one in Pleasanton?

Ramen in Pleasanton

What used to be a small Japanese grocery store now has turned into a ramen shop. I recently visited Nakayama few days ago to try their ramen noodle. They just started their restaurant for couple weeks now. In the menu, there is miso ramen, tonkotsu, and some others ramen which I don't remember and didn't remember to jot down from their menu.
I ordered the tonkotsu ramen (they also have the spicy version). The soup was tasty and noodle was good, with all the usual ingredients of a ramen noodle. I only wished they put a bit more serving for noodle and soup.
Overall, it's good; definitely a good ramen in this area, and much better compared to the other ramen shop nearby. I usually go for my ramen fixing at Maruichi (either location), and this place is pretty good that I'll come back again, since its nearby my home!
It's located nearby Swensen's Pho, which now has transformed itself to Pho only restaurant.

The 2008 cherries are here !!!

We went to Brentwood yesterday to pick cherries. We went to DC Extraordinary Cherry farm, http://www.harvest4you.com/09dcec4.htm. They have Bing, Rainier, Utah Giant and Sweet Anne. $2/lbs. Since our favorite is Rainier, that's that we picked. The tree is low lying, so kids can pick the fruits themselves also. The rainier cherries are sweet and ripes; we ended up with 20 lbs of them.
There were quite a lot of folks went to Brentwood yesterday, so some farms may be closed today and tomorrow; if you are planning on going, call the farms directly.

The 2008 cherries are here !!!

Any suggestions for which farm in Brentwood to go for pick your own cherry?

March 2008 - Grocery Outlet

I stopped by Livermore's GO recently. Got a pint of Haagen Daz's Triple Chocolate for $1.49.
Grab a box of this pasta, for 99 cents.. Never heard of the name, Podere Italia, but sounds interesting. Here is the detail: http://www.nasoegola.com/egg-pasta-podere-italia-fettuccine-detail.jsp Not much info found on the net about this pasta.
Found some Adells' sausage, many varieties.
Thanks Chowhound! Wouldn't have gone to GO if I didn't read this thread :)

Rambutan at Manila Oriental Market

Spotted fresh Rambutan today (Monday eve) at Le Asia in San Ramon for $ 5.99/lbs. Not that many left, I saw about 4 or 5 pack left.
They also have frozen mangosteen.

MANGOSTEEN anyone???

I saw frozen mangosteen at Seafood Market in Union City, off Alvarado yesterday.

Rambutan at Manila Oriental Market

I saw fresh rambutan as well as frozen rambutan at Seafood Market in Union City, off Alvarado blvd. No idea on how much is the price for the fresh one, no price tag nearby. For frozen one is about $1.60/lbs.

Where can I go to take a class on decorating cakes and cupcakes?

Try your local Michael's store, they have some cake decoration classes. If your nearest one doesn't have it, other stores may have it. It's based on Wilton method.

What is the best burrito in the SF bay area?

As others mentioned, La Bamba in Mountain View. Now thinking about it, I'm hungry for one.

Kee Wah - new branch in Dublin

I had the flaky chicken pie; it was delicious, but I don't have others to compare to.
Just Koi was packed also on Sept 1st eve. They open on Fri and Sat till 10pm.

Asian market coming to San Ramon

We went there at around 1pm on grand opening day. The parking lot was full, but not that difficult to find one if you park nearby Longs Drug.
The cashiers line inside was quite long, waited about 20 minutes. They had promotion where if you spend certain amount of dollars, you get free items, such as 2-litre Coke, Chinese Sausage and 20-25lbs rice.
I noticed that they also have Indonesian food section, with quite good selections.

Kaffir Lime Leaves? Where to buy?

Can you explain more on being illegal from outside sources?

I also have a kaffir lime tree in my backyard; its quite huge and produces lots of fruits as well.

Moved from SF to Pleasanton...Please help.

I went to ramen restuarant in that complex a few days after they're open. I was disappointed with the ramen quality, not as good as Maruichi, which is my standard. I haven't been back there yet to see if it has improved or not.

A new Korean restaurant has open in Santa Rita, near Stanley, it's called Spring Rain. I haven't been there yet, so no review yet.

If you like Korean's noodle soup, Jambong, a spicy beef and seafood noodle soup, try Chinese Schezuan near Hopyard and Valley. They make their own noodle fresh, it's quite good. I don't know if many folks know that they offer this on the menu.

Finding Agar-agar in Chinatown

You should be able to find them in Ranch 99, or in Daly City Pacific Super. here is what it looks like for Indonesian style... The brand name in Indonesia is Swallow.

Thanks Melanie... I was at Gilroy yesterday and bought three of them.

Thoughts on 'Sweet Tomatoes'

In San Francisco Bay Area, they serve breakfast every Sunday from 9am - noon.
The location I've been to here, the restaurants are pretty clean and nice.

Ajisen Ramen opens yet?

It's open few days ago, but I heard they don't have full menu yet.

Breakfast @ Sweet Tomatoes

Sweet Tomatoes in this area starts serving breakfast every Sunday, from 9am to noon. Last Sunday, we went to the one in Pleasanton to try their breakfast; it's their first time serving breakfast.

In addition to their regular salad, and soup (only 2-3 soups available), they serve :
- scrambled eggs
- potatoes o'brien
- waffles w/ maples, strawberry, raspberry syrup
- biscuits n gravy
- oatmeals
- muffins
- 'make your own breakfast burritos'
- spinach quiches (? not sure of the name)
- cereals + fruits
- and more...

Overall, the breakfast was great; we were pretty satisfied with the selections and quality.
I had the spinach quiches, forgot the actual name, that was tasty, had couple of them. They also had a 'pizza' breakfast, again the name escape me that was good.
Scrambled eggs were cooked in smaller batch, using same setup for their pasta during lunch or dinner. Orange juice were available if you buy 'mixology' drink.
As expected, the salad bar didn't get much attention; mostly empty plate during the walk to the cashier :) The price is same as lunch price, around $7, which I found it to be a good value.

They don't have bacon, or sausage or pancakes though.
