Dim Sum that replaced Golden Pond...

Hi.

I was talking to somebody last night. She said that there used to be a good Chinese restaurant that did Dim Sum in Queens called Golden Pond. A few years ago it became another Chinese restaurant. She said the Dim Sum there was still pretty good, but she was unable to remember the name or the location. Does anyone know the place I'm talking about?

Will whipped cream cheese become smooth easier?

Ok. Thanks for the replies!

Will whipped cream cheese become smooth easier?

My electric mixer broke, and I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet. My question is, if a recipe calls for cream cheese to be mixed until smooth and I don't have a mixer would it be ok to use whipped cream cheese under the assumption it would be easier to work with?

When will setting yogurt spoil?

Just made my first batch of yogurt yesterday. I think it came out okay, but I would have liked it to be a bit more sour. I've heard the longer you leave yogurt out before you refrigerate it increases the sourness of the flavor. Does anyone know how long yogurt can be left to set before it starts to spoil?

An additional question would be if the starter yogurt (plain, greek, indian, etc.) has a strong effect on the eventual flavor of the finished product?

Tibetan/Nepali roundup in Jackson Heights?

I've been noticing that there are quite a few Tibetan/Tibetan-Nepali/Himalayan places in Jackson Heights these days. The only one I've been to is Himalayan Yak (and I'm not sure it still exists). Will be heading out there for dinner tonight. Any lists or advice on places to check out?

Will be with my mother and my sister, so my mother will probably be looking for more of a sit-down type place. I'd be interesting in hearing about more fast foody places as well, though, I can just keep them in mind for future visits...

Belgian beyond Moules and Frites...

Looking to try a good Belgian restaurant. Also want to try something more than just Moules and Frites. Any suggestions? I was going to try Markt, but it seems like it's gotten a few bad reviews.

Heard Bruxelles was good, also heard it might be closed though....

What's the deal with wine in grocery stores in NYC?

I had been out of the country for a while and missed the whole wine in grocery stores debate. It seems the issue hasn't been settled yet, but I know that I've seen wine in grocery stores in Queens. Not good wine, far from it, but wine nonetheless. So I ask once again, what's the deal with wine in grocery stores in NYC?

Uncooked celery is limp...

Thanks for all the advice!

Uncooked celery is limp...

Hi,

I have some leftover celery that I didn't need so I stashed it in the veggie drawer in my fridge. I was going to use some of it in a stew later on this week. The celery seems to have gone a bit limp though. The coloring looks ok, and it doesn't smell rotten, but if it is limp is it starting to go bad?

Pumpkin Pie in Astoria???

Well, this is totally last minute, but my Thanksgiving plans changed yesterday. My sister used to have a Thanksgiving party at her place for a few years, and a friend of a friend always brought a pumpkin pie from Astoria. It was one of the best pumpkin pies I've ever had, and I'm totally blanking on the name. I'm sure if I saw the name I would remember it, but right now I'm drawing a blank. Does anyone know of any place in Astoria, that makes AMAZING pumpkin pies? Thanks for the help!!!

Bouley Bakery Croques?

Saw this the other day. I went by there this morning and didn't see them anywhere. Has anyone had one there?

Bottles of Leffe brune...

Does anyone know where I can find bottles of Leffe brune? Blond is fairly easy to find, but outside of bars I can't find brune anywhere. Any suggestions?

Elven lembas bread?

This might be kind of fun to make, although I'm not much of a baker. Was trying to see if anyone has run into anything like this that's premade. Maybe I should repost with a different title...

Elven lembas bread?

I'm serious. For those of you have read the Lord of the Rings books, or seen the movies you will most likely know what I am talking about. Obviously real lembas bread doesn't exist, but has anyone had anything close to it? Some type of flatbread or wafer that is sweet rather than savory, almost like a cake?

Bamonte's open/closed(?) and recs...

Thanks. I also missed the earlier Bamonte's thread and realized that there was not a lot of positive feedback about it. I'm not from Williamsburg though, I just wanted to check the place out.

Parsi and Irani recs. in Bombay...

I might be in India next month, and I'll definitely be in Bombay at some point if I wind up in the subcontinent.

Do people have any recommendations for good Parsi and Irani restaurants in Bombay? I've heard the two communities have pretty distinct cuisines, and I'm interested in trying them out.

Thanks,

Pagal

Bamonte's open/closed(?) and recs...

Two questions.

First one. Is Bamonte's in Williamsburg still open? I called today to get some information and I kept on getting a busy signal. Their website also seems to be down (or I have a bad address). Either I just had bad luck, or these might be bad signs.

Also, what do people think of the place in general? I'm thinking of going there with someone who's favorite cuisine is Italian food. I've heard it's not the most inventive place, but that they make all the standards quite well.

Peace,
Pagal

good food, good beer, good times...

Ok. So tomorrow is my birthday and I've realized what I really want is a good restaurant that has a pretty good beer selection. Seriously, that's all I want. After experimenting with something "different" for the past few years with mixed results (some good, some bad) I just want a place with reliably good food, where I can also throw down a good import or two. Thanks!

Food at Queens Botanical Garden

If I recall correctly there are also 2 or 3 Indo-Pak/Afghani places directly across the road from the entrance on Main st. The food is pretty good, and there are seats, but they're mostly grab and go type of places. You'll be able to eat there if you want, but not the place to go if you want to linger over lunch....

Best Cubano UPTOWN

No, it's not Cafe con Leche, although I have been there and liked the food. I've never gotten a cubano there, though. I seem to remember reading something about a small Carribean place in the 100's that had a couple of cheap and good options. I didn't get out there though, and when I decided to I couldn't remember the name, or where I read about it!

Best Cubano UPTOWN

I read about a place somewhere in the 100's on maybe Columbus or Amsterdam that has good Cubanos. I forgot what it was called and I can't find the article anywhere. Does anyone know the place I'm talking about?

Momos!

So, I'll preface this by saying that I've never been to Tibet (or Nepal). I have eaten at a number of places in India that were run by Tibetans though. Most notably places in Darjeeling, Gangtok, and Mussoorie. I don't know if Momos in India have been "Indianized," but I've loved the Momos I've had over there. Any recommendations for places in NY that serve Momos the way they're made by Tibetans in India?

Best Cubano UPTOWN

Hi. I was just wondering what the best place for a Cubano is Uptown. Please don't tell me the best places in Manhattan or the city. I'm trying to figure out where to get a good sandwich not too far from where I live (113th and St. Nick). Thanks...

Great, inexpensive Thai in Manhattan?

I saw the "anywhere in the city" bit, and in my mind NYC is much, much more that Manhattan. That being said, how does Pam Real stack up to Sri? I've eaten at Wondee and thought the food was decent, but I wasn't blown away.

Best all-around bakery

How is it that the Sullivan St. bakery location, which is not on Sullivan St. kept the name? Kinda weird. Was there a messy split in the company?

Croques!

Where's the best Croque Monsieur in the city in your opinion? Preferably a place where I can just go in and just get a Croque, not somewhere where it's considered an appetizer or something.

Great, inexpensive Thai in Manhattan?

If you like Thai food you MUST make a trip out to Woodside in Queens at least once. There's a small Thai community that has spawned the excellent Khao Homm Thai, and the even better Sripraphai. Also, down the road in Jackson Heights is Rice Avenue, which is also very yum. Sure, they're all the way in Queens, but they're a whole lot better than anything I've ever had in Manhattan (although I have yet to try Pam Real.)

New Food on Broadway btwn 137 and 138

There's a deli counter in a place at the corner of 138 and B'way. They have a sign in the window that says El Rey del.....something. This a temporary location for these guys, or a different sandwich?

Tres Pasos

I had some tacos from there yesterday. I tried it out b/c I live literally around the corner. They're ok, but in my opinion there's really no reason to go there when you can get better Mexican food (and a much wider selection) down the road at El Toro Partido.

Tuscany Grill in Winston-Salem, NC...

Isn't Paul's run by Italians?
