L.A. Dish of the Month, July 2015 -- SKEWERS

Mentioned on another thread, skewers at Tehran Market parking lot (Wilshire and 15th in Santa Monica) on Sundays only 11-4. They're insanely good.

Suggestions for out of towners

Start with the website Eater LA - they have a top 25 list they update all the time. Also, this is a frequent question, I suggest perusing the boards. Right now, many of the hot new restaurants are on the westside/Santa Monica, like Cassia and Estate and Tar & Roses and Gjelina and so on.

Tell us: Will you have a car? How far did you want to travel? Budget per person for food + drinks?

Date spot - west LA?

There are many near Century City - from Beverly Hills all the way to Santa Monica. Do you have a car? How far did you want to go?

LA BARBERA'S UPDATE!!!!!!

I'm in and can't wait to order the sausage! Maybe it'll make me feel like an undergrad again.

I don't know how to pick for picky eaters! (But need to find a place for dinner for 7 tomorrow!)

Sticking to Venice/SM:
Chaya Venice
Tar and Roses
Hillstone
Catch at Casa del Mar
James Beach
Ingo's Tasty Diner
Misfit
Boa

Chow worthy food in the most unexpected places

I should mention also that they have chow-worthy frozen foods - unique items, and everything I've tried is really good. It's also my go-to place for Belgian Feta, super creamy and much less expensive than anywhere else.

Chow worthy food in the most unexpected places

The kabobs at the Tehran Market on Wilshire at 15th in Santa Monica - but they only barbecue on Sunday afternoons. The ground beef kabobs are to die, served with tabouli and peppers and a little salad for $7.99. They also do lamb, chicken and one other (can't remember). The seasoning is perfect, and ask for extra lemon. The set up is in the back parking lot shared with Izzy's.

Top Leaf (Westwood)

I used to trek to the Coop just for that pizza after a long night at URL, it's sad to hear corporations have taken over the food.

Top Leaf (Westwood)

Way too far away for all those classes I had at Rolfe Hall. But ideal for a break in finals studying. Now I have a reason to go to back to Westwood, post closure of the hot dog place

Downtown LA, Wednesday Evening, Seafood and Vegetarian?

Your budget is fairly low, but the first thing that came to mind was Border Grill. Fresh fish, great apps, lots of vegetarian options, easy off the 110:

Helping picking a GREEK Restaurant on West side?

Depends how far you're willing to drive, Taverna Tony's in Malibu is where I go for my fix for Greek. tavernatony.com/

Fuddruckers Santa Monica (Again)

Line out the door and around the corner today at about noon. I imagine the office workers and hospital / rehab centers / retirement home workers nearby are happy for something new. Lots of scrubs in that line.

Favorite burger for $5 or less?

Definitely Big Jo's. I love their patty melt, too

No Corkage on Westside

Some of the Hillstone restaurants have no corkage - at least for the first bottle, and then minimal after that. It's case by case now (used to be all of their restaurants).

Ingo's in Santa Monica (in old Callahan's space)

Yes, the website clearly states that they are closed on Tuesdays. Seems to be permanent.

Greek Theater Picnic Baskets

The Greek doesn't lend itself well to picnicking, not like the Bowl does. Few tables, and those tables share space with the smoking section.

Los Angeles Restaurants good for Sunday Brunch for a Large Group?

Where in LA? In Santa Monica: Michael's, Fig, Penthouse all do baby shower brunches.

Also tell us your budget. Having a baby shower is different than asking for a Sunday Brunch spot for a large group. Showers tend to be loud, last for hours - not all restaurants are accommodating.

Like you, was walking past. Have seen many soft opening posts here, the A-Frame one from a few years ago went for pages and pages.

Will fully review food and service when properly up and running, just wanted to give the heads up that it's soon to open and give an idea of decor and menu. For a soft opening, it was truly one of the most organized and professional and consistent I've been to, so have high hopes.

Ingo's in Santa Monica (in old Callahan's space)

Went to Friends and Family this weekend, place officially opens on Wed night. Have to say, food was consistently excellent, service outstanding. Same owners as Misfit, so their bar/drink menu is outstanding. Something called The Good Doctor drink will get me back there quickly (vodka, chili, and a mix of cucumber, kale, celery, and apple juice).

Had the filet and the chili garlic broccoli, very good.

They've kept the integrity of the mid-century design of Callahan's (built in '48, I think), kept the counter for the bar, kept the formica tables and booths. It's loud, but enjoyable. A nice addition to the neighborhood - one that's teeming with restaurants in a quarter mile area.

Menu is mostly chops, beef, some grilled seafood, and a wonderful variety of greens.

Santa Monica

What about it? Are you asking where to go for ice cream in Santa Monica?

A: Sweet Rose Creamery

Fajita Chicken tostada is great. Chicken taquitos are the best comfort food in LA. My default when I'm exhausted and just need something savory are those chicken taquitos.

Top 5 Downtown L A?

I would head to Maccheroni Republic, it's in your budget and very close to the Chandler.
