L.A. Dish of the Month, August 2015 -- HOT DOGS/SAUSAGES

I miss Fab's in Westwood soooo much, was the best on the westside. I've been going to Ketchy's for my fix, but there's really no decent hot dog west of Sawtelle. Someone needs to open a place in Santa Monica! Restaurants open every week, but all feature kale - down with kale, up with hot dogs!

West Side Deli Lovers Rejoice Wexler's Deli is Coming to Santa Monica

I miss Zucky's, still. And the deli at the Country Mart where Farm Shop is now, I loved that place, too.

Joan's on Third Is Coming to Santa Monica...

Because this old thread resurfaced this morning, I was reminded that I hadn't been there, yet (tourist traffic, etc) - so went and had the most amazing Cobb Salad I've had on the westside (they call it a chopped salad, but it's not chopped). Truly great salad, and perfect lunch. That dressing! They call it a sherry vinaigrette, but it's got a tangy, citrus, bite that's to die.

The bakery is pretty great, too - rivals Farm Shop - and I had a fantastic salted chocolate chip cookie and tasted all the ice cream (there's an interesting Corn Flake ice cream, but the Mint Chocolate Chip is the winner).

Weekend lunches in or near Malibu

Malibu Farm Cafe and also their Restaurant (one is at the end of the Malibu Pier, one at the base), are my favorite farm to table restaurants in all of LA County right now. I love every dish I've had there, and am hooked on the Cauliflower pizza/flatbread. Seasonal fruit Sangria cannot be missed, either. Cafe doesn't have a full bar, but amazing views (and that Sangria).

Neptune's Net for fish tacos.

Mr Chow in Malibu - not the best chinese food, but quite the scene. Taverna Tony's for Greek, and more of the scene.

Some of the restaurants perk suggested are closed, like Howdy's.

For Mexican, you've got Casa Escobar. Not the best, but if you don't feel like driving into town, it'll do.

The Sunset in Point Dume has very good food and a fantastic happy hour. Can't beat the views.

Los Angeles Area Abbreviations

UCLA is in Westwood. I concur with paranoidgarlic that Westside is not the same as WLA. Westside is anything west of the eastside ;)

One night solo in Beverly Hills

You have so many great choices within a few minutes walk - no need for a taxi nor uber:

Wally's
Bouchon Bar or even the cafe downstairs, and sit outside (this would be first choice)
Spago Bar
South Beverly Grill or their wine bar next door.
Il Pastaio
Porta Via

Beverly Hills / West Hollywood recs?

Wally's in BH. Eveleigh in WH. Both have menu items that work.

2nd Anniversary Dinner

Wow, has it been two years?

Romantic and good food, with views? How far do you want to drive? It will sound weird, but that new Mastro's Ocean Club is quite good and has gorgeous views. Another idea is to drive to Point Dume, to The Sunset. The food is surprisingly good there.

Without views, but quiet and delicious would be Georgio Baldi, Cafe Delfini, Via Veneto, Capo and Little Door.

Restaurants in Santa Monica with a good back room for mini-Reunion?

The Arsenal, Warsaw, Loew's Hotel, Sushi Roku, Musha, all have areas that can be great for a small group - depends how many of you

L.A. Dish of the Month, August 2015 -- HOT DOGS/SAUSAGES

I had an excellent chili cheese dog at Ketchy's II on La Grange at Sawtelle today. Yummy chili (not too chunky for the dog), soft bun, fresh onions, all around excellent. Plenty of chili to dip my fries, also. $8.50 includes fries and a drink

I found a yelp image:

Exorbitant cocktail pricing?

Hotel cocktail prices are always in the $18-$20 range, and it's insane. I remember when the Viceroy in Santa Monica would charge $22 for a drink, but they pulled back and changed it to, I think, $16 (which is more in line with nearby hotels).

August visit - 1 lunch, 2 dinners - how are my choices?

Stop considering those on the "considering" list - they are all fair and not worthy of seeking out during your short time in one of the best cities in the country for Asian and ethnic food. Nothing spectacular about any on that second list of yours, and a couple are downright ordinary.

Gjelina is definitely worth a visit, and for sure add Cassia to your dinner list. I would also add Red O in Santa Monica to the list, which will be open on the 1st in the old Ivy at the Shore location near the Pier.

Past favorites from the 1970's

Oh how I loved Nickodell's!
Adam West was a regular at the bar there, and told the best stories.

For chinese, we trekked across town to Shanghai Winter Garden. Seemed so far away, then.

We also would go across town to CC Brown's. I miss all those old places.

Ethnic restaurants near Beverly hills

This means you're not really in Beverly HIlls, but adjacent (despite its name) -- you're staying on Pico near Rodeo.

I would suggest Si Laa on Robertson near Pico - terrific Thai food without driving to Hollywood and beyond.

Ethnic restaurants near Beverly hills

Where, exactly, are you staying? Don't forget that Uber and taxis can take you anywhere, because our public transportation isn't always great in all areas - which is why I ask exactly where you're staying.

L.A. Dish of the Month, July 2015 -- SKEWERS

Mentioned on another thread, skewers at Tehran Market parking lot (Wilshire and 15th in Santa Monica) on Sundays only 11-4. They're insanely good.

Suggestions for out of towners

Start with the website Eater LA - they have a top 25 list they update all the time. Also, this is a frequent question, I suggest perusing the boards. Right now, many of the hot new restaurants are on the westside/Santa Monica, like Cassia and Estate and Tar & Roses and Gjelina and so on.

Tell us: Will you have a car? How far did you want to travel? Budget per person for food + drinks?

Date spot - west LA?

There are many near Century City - from Beverly Hills all the way to Santa Monica. Do you have a car? How far did you want to go?

LA BARBERA'S UPDATE!!!!!!

I'm in and can't wait to order the sausage! Maybe it'll make me feel like an undergrad again.

I don't know how to pick for picky eaters! (But need to find a place for dinner for 7 tomorrow!)

Sticking to Venice/SM:
Chaya Venice
Tar and Roses
Hillstone
Catch at Casa del Mar
James Beach
Ingo's Tasty Diner
Misfit
Boa

Chow worthy food in the most unexpected places

I should mention also that they have chow-worthy frozen foods - unique items, and everything I've tried is really good. It's also my go-to place for Belgian Feta, super creamy and much less expensive than anywhere else.

Chow worthy food in the most unexpected places

The kabobs at the Tehran Market on Wilshire at 15th in Santa Monica - but they only barbecue on Sunday afternoons. The ground beef kabobs are to die, served with tabouli and peppers and a little salad for $7.99. They also do lamb, chicken and one other (can't remember). The seasoning is perfect, and ask for extra lemon. The set up is in the back parking lot shared with Izzy's.

Top Leaf (Westwood)

I used to trek to the Coop just for that pizza after a long night at URL, it's sad to hear corporations have taken over the food.

Top Leaf (Westwood)

Way too far away for all those classes I had at Rolfe Hall. But ideal for a break in finals studying. Now I have a reason to go to back to Westwood, post closure of the hot dog place

Downtown LA, Wednesday Evening, Seafood and Vegetarian?

Your budget is fairly low, but the first thing that came to mind was Border Grill. Fresh fish, great apps, lots of vegetarian options, easy off the 110:

Fuddruckers Santa Monica (Again)

Line out the door and around the corner today at about noon. I imagine the office workers and hospital / rehab centers / retirement home workers nearby are happy for something new. Lots of scrubs in that line.
