Burger Week - $5 Burger specials at various restaurants in Toronto - The Grid newspaper - may 30 to june 2, 2012

Anyone try any of the burgers today?

ISO Canned smoked oysters that are from Canada

I can vouch for this option as well. Picked up a bunch of their stuff at the One of a Kind show two years in a row.

Toronto Taste is the best food event in TO, hands down.

Charity aside, if you can separate it out, how would you rank it is you considered the cost vs. other events which have lower ticket prices? Seems like Toronto Taste is almost double (at $250) vs. some other charity food events.

I was there as a volunteer so I "saw" some of the amazing dishes but didn't get to try anything :)

It was a really well organized event (even from a behinds the scene view) and the food options seemed incredible. Curious how you managed to survive the evening, I think I would be so overwhelmed with all of the food options!

I won a ticket last year to Brewer's Plate and I really enjoyed that event as a guest... Would love to be able to donate to Second Harvest and go next year to Toronto Taste as a guest as well.

Glad you enjoyed the event and curious to hear what others have to say as well.

Airport dining?

In addition to what Bytepusher posted, if you wanted to leave the airport and come back, then 4 hours isn't really a huge amount of time especially since there isn't really anything around the airport area which would be worth going through that hassle for, and, probably not enough time to get to somewhere decent. If you are on a connecting flight and your bags are being re-checked in for you there is probably security issues as well.

Burger's Priest vs. Holy Chuck vs. Stockyards

I liked my burger there, WAY better than anything I have ever had at any fast food joint. I am surprised what you said about the shake too because I had the peanut butter/chocolate one and it was my favourite shake I have ever had anywhere. I like that they have thicker straws too.

Surprised to hear that you would prefer a McDs burger to theirs. The thing is, I won't be going back often because of the cost, not because of the quality.

Food-related volunteering [Toronto]

I will broaden this post to include items that are food related and do help out with homeless/poor people but not directly.

Yesterday I just volunteered for Toronto Taste for the first time. It is a huge annual event put on by Second Harvest (been at the ROM the last few years). They have a wide variety of duties as a volunteer including checking people in, giving out loot bags at the end, clearing tables (which was what I was doing). They said the evening generations enough donations to provide for lik 750,000 meals. I am still sore from last night, but, it was an interesting experience. They have a really big team of volunteers. They also do other things throughout the year like having people at TTC stations canvassing for "lunch money", etc.
There is also Not Far From The Tree which I have been wanting to volunteer for but haven't been able to make the schedule work yet. Basically, they will harvest private property fruit trees. A third goes to the landowner, a third to the volunteers and a third to the food bank

Dinner close to Thompson hotel (NOT scarpetta)

What about one of the Susur Lee spots? Been there?
Alimento is seems to be pretty good too. I only had wine and desserts but read good reviews of mains and it really transforms itself in the evening vs. the "grocery store" setting during the day.

Burger Week - $5 Burger specials at various restaurants in Toronto - The Grid newspaper - may 30 to june 2, 2012

I saw this posted on RFD, looks like it could be interesting. A bunch of restaurants are featured and will have a $5 burger

The list of participating looks awesome... In addition to places like Burger Bratz, Holy Chuck, etc there is smaller places like Keriwa Cafe,

The week ends in an event at Wychwood Barns on June 3rd.

Details here:

Joanne Kates is leaving the Globe!

She is talking on Newstalk 1010 right now. John Tory's show, kind of interesting to hear about her experiences.

Memphis Fire Barbeque Company - Stoneycreek

Yeah, I don't like the wings either. Really dislike them but liked everything else I have had so far. I was back on the weekend for breakfast. I had the Breakfast and BBQ and I really enjoyed it. The biscuits were good with breakfast and I got a side of pancakes as well.

Grand Electric

Not sure if it has been discussed, but do people think the loud music is designed to help turn over the tables quicker? No lingering conversation, just eating and drinking...

Calypso Lemonade

Did you try contacting the company? http://www.kingjuice.com/contact.html

I saw a thread that said they are available in USA Walmarts. Might want to check with a Walmart in Toronto area.

Going to Toronto Taste on Sunday. Anyone else going?

I am going, but, as a volunteer and not a patron. Never been before so I am curious. Maybe next year I will support the event as a donor/ticket holder.

Hero Certified Burgers....What the $^%#!!!!!

I recall having the large burger in the past and it being gross. About 6 months ago I had one of their smaller sized burgers (maybe 4 oz patty?) and I liked it better. Anyone tried their salmon burger or other options?

And yeah, the chain is really growing fast. They seem to really be trying to expand quickly.

looking for vietnamese sandwich

Banh Mi by definition just means the bread but it is often used interchangeably to mean the sandwich. Sounds like the dish they were talking about was a curry dish with the baguette style bread on the side. As you said, probably best to ask them.

Where to take wife for 10th anniversary in Toronto

I agree. Worthy of a 10th anniversary dinner.

The Chickery - Spadina South of Richmond (David Adjey's new casual spot)

Exactly.

But, I put it there for context.

He is a "food network" chef. He did (maybe still does) Restaurant Makeover and some other shows for the network. He used to be a personal chef for Dan Akroyd.

Curious, prices are high but how is the taste?

Anyone tried them? Worth giving a shot if in the area or avoid?
It is a casual rotisserie chicken spot.

Kinton Ramen - Opening on Baldwin St. - May 2012

Thanks, I reported my original post, asked them to change the topic heading.

iced coffee 2012

A tip for getting a "decent" iced coffee at McDs ($1 for medium size for the summer).

I order it - Half Ice (otherwise it is way too much ice), milk (instead of cream) and no sweetener (find it way too sweet).

Kinton Ramen - First Taste

Thanks for the review. Was this a special invite thing or did you just go? Any wait when you went in or when you left? (i.e. lineups?)

Toronto bakeries with swiss meringue type frosting on cakes and cupcakes- please help

I wish I had a daughter's who was having a birthday soon so I could have an excuse to travel all over the city eating cupcakes :) I went to Prairie Girl for the first time yesterday, I had walked by it many times before but often it was closed when I was in the area so finally had a chance to try it. I was also really disappointed. I think part of the reason was because I got 2 mini cupcakes vs. normal size and the frosting overpowered the Mini based on proportion to cake. I also was not a fan of either of the frostings (Creme Cheese on the red velvet and peanut butter on the banana). After reading your post westcoastgirl I now understand why I didn't like it. I found it much too sweet (frosting).

I can't recall if you mentioned For The Love of Cake yet in this thread but between them and Bobette and Belle they are probably my favourites in the city of the spots I have tried: http://fortheloveofcake.ca/

Joey's - Eaton Centre

Thanks for all of the feedback. Will likely play it safe or "safer" and get a burger.

Hamilton Area Update

I would add Memphis Fire BBQ to this list, it is in Winona very close to Stoney Creek. Great BBQ.

Anyone been to Chuck's Burger Bar? Worth checking out?

Luminato - 1000 Tastes - June 9 and 10, 2012 - Distillery District

This year's 1000 Tastes is happening at Distillery District. I think the best year was the one at Queens Park but the one on Mill Street (the first year) was decent too. Interesting to see it go back to Distillery District area, wonder how it will handle the crowds this time around:

Doesn't look like the participating restaurant list is up yet. I know a lot of mixed reviews in past threads but I am still hoping for the best.

As a side note, some really great free programming so worth while checking out the other items too. (free concert by Rufus Wainright, K'Naan, etc).

Milton, ON - good places to eat?

The only place that I know people from out of town visit for food is the Halifax Donair place on Main Street. A friend recently moved to Milton but I can't say I have had any awesome food around Milton yet. There is a BBQ place up in Georgetown that is good though. As other's said not many ethnic/asian options in Milton itself. Brampton isn't too far I guess.

Just ordered a dozen glory hole doughnuts

BLOGTO mentioned this today: "Parkdale just got even sweeter with the announcement that Glory Hole Doughnuts is set to open their first retail location this summer at 1596 Queen Street West."

Her website says her production is down until the new store opens as she has to move her kitchen over and her old lease expired.

Openings 2012 (Toronto)

Greg's Ice Cream is now open in the Distillery... in part of the old Fresh/Wild grocery store:

The Works - coming to The Danforth

Wow, sounds like a horrible experience. My burger was pretty decent when I went to the Oakville opening. Sounds like they have quality control issues. Definitely not the best burger ever but far from the worst when I had mine

Recent Marben, since the change of staff?

I have picked up from various people and posts that it isnt' as good as before but I haven't been personally before or after so I can't really comment. I had been wanting to go as well but I am waiting to hear about more recent experiences.
