Best Cocktails Near Ritz Carlton Chicago?

They do a nice martini, always enjoyed a couple there each time we went. You're right about the fog though. I found it quite relaxing in the middle of the day or when they first opened at 11:00.

Was Henrici's a restaurant?

Yes, Oakbrook! We went there all the time my mom and I. We loved the chicken pot pie, actually the whole menu. As others have mentioned the coffee with the little pitcher of whipped cream was such a great detail. I think my meals there really gave me a good foundation to appreciate service, food and a beautiful atmosphere. I can just picture in my mind walking in and strolling to a table loaded down with bags from MF&Co. and many other Oakbrook Center stores.

Pastrami sandwich on Oahu?

You know, not technically pastrami, but……..The pipikaula reuben at the Plumeria Cafe at the Kahala will change your life!!! It was so awesome I could barely contain myself last month. No kidding. Only $16.00 for this HUGE sandwich on beautiful marbled rye, grilled to perfection. K-Man I am not lying on this one!!!! It's divine!
And yes, that is an amazing Mai Tai on the side! Let's go sometime!

One chance for lunch in Maui, coming from Kahului

I would go to Honu's in Lahaina. Lovely setting, right on the water. Amazing food and a menu that would satisfy all of your preferences. Try to Ahi Pizza.

Honolulu (mostly Waikiki) trip report March 2015- oh, Sasabune :(

Thanks for such a detailed report. Your child sounds like dining out is a natural at this point even with the normal time change issue, you are lucky! I was most interested in your comments about your sad meal at Sasabune. That sounds so disappointing. You certainly managed to have a variety of meals. Interesting about Japengo that they know in August it will close, probably waiting for the summer months to go by. I have enjoyed the Maui location which was the first. Thanks for the report, take care!

Foodland vs Safeway in Honolulu

Thanks macarca, it's true. Also it's so easy to identify rental cars by license plates and the larege bar code stickers. Where I work I am always surprised to hear people say "oh, my purse/wallet is in the car I'll be right back." Another idea is the little market attached to Nico's Pier 38. He has fresh fish and other seafood for sale at reasonable prices and great baguette!

I second the Fish Market suggestion. I also think you might enjoy Sangrita Grill & Cantina. Really delicious seafood, the ceviche is wonderful, served in a mason jar a really sizable portion. The tequila and wine program are very good as well. They have some great cinnamon coffee that you can also buy as well as some tasty rub that I have used in numerous ways. It is in a strip mall setting right in front of Whaler's Village the outside area looks at the parking lot but it is festive and the interior has a great ambiance. Also Pizza Paradiso is a good choice right across from the Honua Kai resort.

Just me but I don't think I'd want to leave luggage in the car at any of these locations.

Searching for Hidden Gems on the North Shore, Oahu

Sorry, I got tired of waiting for the photos to post and didn't have time for captions. I'll see if I can add them now! Thanks Steve! Oh, I can't figure out how to go back and add information. I need to get the menu to write what they are. More later!

Searching for Hidden Gems on the North Shore, Oahu

The Sunday Kailua Farmer's market (which it seems you are going to) has a great place for local sausages/meats in Link. Chef Robert McGee makes amazing sausages, bacon and other things. You would not be disappointed! I love his creations. I would suggest also Cactus Bistro in Kailua. Amazing food, not
too fancy but a wonderful menu with a great weekend brunch as well. They
do have Happy Hour from 3:30-5:30 daily. I would also encourage you to try
Vino. Great menu amazing wine program with Master Sommelier Chuck Furuya
hosting the floor nightly. Personally I love Roy's Waikiki always a great menu and the service and staff are most amazing, just Aloha personified. Great wine selections as well. Please don't think of it as another chain it is not. I was just there and then after to Lewer's Lounge in Halekulani for a drink. I sat at the bar and watched and was engulfed in the beautiful aroma of the absinthe dripping over a sugar cube. Amazing! In Kaneohe is a pizza place called Boston's but it is not affiliated with the other restaurants of similar name. It is a spin off as it were and the people also serve pizza from a portable pizza oven at the Saturday Ward Warehouse farmer's market. Their pizzas are truly delicious! We carry out from there frequently since it is so close to our house. On our side the "big" deal place to go is Haleiwa Joe's at Haiku Gardens. Seems everyone goes there for birthday, anniversary, out of town guests. I totally love their prime rib which is huge, probably get 2-3 meals after from it. Usually hash with a poached egg. But the supply is limited and you have to go early. You'd be shocked at how full it is
when it first opens but they also have "Aloha Hour" so that adds to the crowds.
You might really like Waihole Poi Factory for Hawaiian plate lunch, it's delicious and now served daily. I was at Vino last night before Elton John and had a delicious meal. Mini Osso Buco, special of the day pasta, calamari, brussels sprouts beautiful food. If you are a church goer try First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu at Koolau (yes, it's a golf course - church owned!) They have their own chef and Sunday lunches are amazing and $8.00 or less. Today was fried pork chops, broccoli cheddar soup, Hebi with watercress and other veggies, a really great line up today and coconut bread pudding. The Safeway at Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center has a good selection of produce and basics for breakfasts etc.

Oahu and Maui - where to eat? Coming from LA

Mai Tai bar doesn't overlook the water, it's in the middle of the mall. I would suggest (very highly) in Kailua Cactus Bistro. Amazing food, a great
brunch on the weekends with great entertainment that just adds to the ambiance providing wonderful background music. They also have a daily
happy hour from 3:30-5:30 with drink and appetizer specials. I really really also enjoyed Sangrita Grill & Cantina on Maui. Right by the Whaler's Village shopping center. Delicious fresh seafood with a Mexican flair, amazing ceviche, a great tequila and wine program. No view but there is indoor
and outdoor seating. I got some of their coffee to take home (cinnamon
and spice) absolutely delicious!

Thanksgiving turkey packages, any experiences?

Hey! That's so great to hear! I am very happy you were so satisfied and full! I went to the potluck dinner at the church there and saw the pick up area in the port cochere. Lots of people looked happy and hungry as they left! Good to know! Aloha! Happy Thanksgiving weekend! :-)

Koolau Caterers has a great package. And, you can pick/choose sides if that is all you are looking for. It is through Koolau Ballrooms. Here is their website. I saw their menu/flyer this morning. The chef is James Gillespie and I eat his food all the time. Just an idea for you. http://koolauballrooms.com

Magnificent Mile Hip Eateries

I was there in May and found no wait for PP mid afternoon, had a pleasant and relaxing time eating most of the menu. I always go there every year. One day we
were feeling kind of mediocre and left the hotel (The Whitehall) and strolled down Michigan Ave. not very far as we though why not try Bar Toma. We had a lovely meal of a delicious pizza, salad and appetizer with some great unusual sangrias.
Lovely decision it was! I will say that there were several people in and out getting free samples of gelato with a coupon but they weren't bothersome. The reason we stayed to eat was we really wanted an espresso and then saw the food and smelled it and decided to stay to eat.

Magnificent Mile Hip Eateries

Oh bother! I had a post written and then for some reason I couldn't sign in and blah blah blah so the post got lost in the redoing password tedium. But anyway, I was there in May. We went to the PP about 3:30 and had no wait at all. We had a leisurely time eating most of the menu and it was only 2 of us. The next day we were looking for a nice coffee spot and remembered Bar Toma was close to our hotel The Whitehall. So we walked over there had coffee and a biscotti and kept seeing wonderful food going by. We could see and smell such delicious things that we decided to move from the coffee bar to a table. We enjoyed a nice pizza, salad, appetizer and 2 unusual sangrias. Lovely afternoon was about 2:00. I agree that you should definitely go to David Burke. You have wonderful suggestions from these posters and you should follow their advice!

Airport to kaiula

What "h" word? I would think Macsak would be using the "L" word which would be local as the designated clientele. It is
true you can find way more things that work for daily consumption in the home kitchen. I used to go to the Kailua market every now and then but it's way too crowded and also full of visitors and prepared food vendors. Nothing wrong with that but if you want to eat at home with fresh foods it is difficult to find all your needs there. I live in Kaneohe and it is far from the madding crowd of Kailua. I go there to work but am always glad to come home to my valley home!

Whoa! What a post! I am sorry you had such an interesting time. I've never been and have never been inclined to go. I hope you have better meals while you are on Maui. How did you find out they do 700 a night?

Oahu Trip Report - August/September 2014

I did not find the food "torturous" for having sat in the least. I have given up on the KCC market, way too crowded, parking ridiculous and not like it was when it started primarily for people who live here to stock up for the week. Now it is more prepared food, I end up being more annoyed at my experience than pleased so I stopped going. I went on Friday to the Lo'i event and helped shred chicken straight from the imu. I couldn't cross the stream to work in the lo'i so I stayed back with the staff of the area and helped them. I won those tickets. Saturday although not an official event I attended my friend winemaker Jim Clendenen's dinner at Vino. He brought out amazing wines, 8 in all some beautiful vintages. Then I stayed at the after party for a while. Sunday I went to the closing event which was awesome "It's a Food World After All" at Aulani/Ihilani on the beach of the lagoons at Ko Olina. Truly a fabulous night. Sakai was there holding court with Nobu, it was such fun. Later I can post some photos if you would like to see thee.

Oahu Trip Report - August/September 2014

Great report! You had a wonderful time from what I see here. I've been going to some of the Hawaii Wine & Food Festival events and they were fun this weekend. So many chefs there with amazing food. Next year you should try to be here for that.

Aloha from NYC! What did you stock up for the Hurricane to eat?

Jar pasta sauce/pasta, those organic soups in that milk carton type packaging, salsa/chips, pita chips, Kirkland canned chicken, VIA coffee, Open Nature hot salami "Coaches" oats from Costco for example. Then I filled Skyy vodka bottles that I keep on hand just for this purpose with water. Wine of course, vodka. Dog food wet and dry. A take from the normal homemade food, dog treats. Candles, battery operated candles. Just a glimpse of our prep! Here's some photos! The Arrowhead is always in such quantity but could have sufficed for water in a pinch. We switched to this from tonic water, less calories great flavor! Thanks for asking UES! We safe now! The windward side looks pretty much normal, rainy, humid and slight winds! Thank God for Mauna Loa and her power and Pele to fight off Iselle!

Birthday Dinner for 8 people in Honolulu/Waikiki

Well that would be true! Since I don't like their food I'd have to have a liquid dinner! BTW, the Boston's in Kaneohe has a new owns and not part of the original group. Fabulous pizzas and some specialty pies as well we had a beautiful one last night!

I am not so sure you could do the !00/pp at Michel's or Hoku's. Remember too Hoku's you have to wear long pants which might not be an issue. I would agree with you on 12th Ave. or even Tiki's.
