Never have I been so baffled: Mama's House of Horrors

Whoa! What a post! I am sorry you had such an interesting time. I've never been and have never been inclined to go. I hope you have better meals while you are on Maui. How did you find out they do 700 a night?

Oahu Trip Report - August/September 2014

I did not find the food "torturous" for having sat in the least. I have given up on the KCC market, way too crowded, parking ridiculous and not like it was when it started primarily for people who live here to stock up for the week. Now it is more prepared food, I end up being more annoyed at my experience than pleased so I stopped going. I went on Friday to the Lo'i event and helped shred chicken straight from the imu. I couldn't cross the stream to work in the lo'i so I stayed back with the staff of the area and helped them. I won those tickets. Saturday although not an official event I attended my friend winemaker Jim Clendenen's dinner at Vino. He brought out amazing wines, 8 in all some beautiful vintages. Then I stayed at the after party for a while. Sunday I went to the closing event which was awesome "It's a Food World After All" at Aulani/Ihilani on the beach of the lagoons at Ko Olina. Truly a fabulous night. Sakai was there holding court with Nobu, it was such fun. Later I can post some photos if you would like to see thee.

Oahu Trip Report - August/September 2014

Great report! You had a wonderful time from what I see here. I've been going to some of the Hawaii Wine & Food Festival events and they were fun this weekend. So many chefs there with amazing food. Next year you should try to be here for that.

Aloha from NYC! What did you stock up for the Hurricane to eat?

Jar pasta sauce/pasta, those organic soups in that milk carton type packaging, salsa/chips, pita chips, Kirkland canned chicken, VIA coffee, Open Nature hot salami "Coaches" oats from Costco for example. Then I filled Skyy vodka bottles that I keep on hand just for this purpose with water. Wine of course, vodka. Dog food wet and dry. A take from the normal homemade food, dog treats. Candles, battery operated candles. Just a glimpse of our prep! Here's some photos! The Arrowhead is always in such quantity but could have sufficed for water in a pinch. We switched to this from tonic water, less calories great flavor! Thanks for asking UES! We safe now! The windward side looks pretty much normal, rainy, humid and slight winds! Thank God for Mauna Loa and her power and Pele to fight off Iselle!

Birthday Dinner for 8 people in Honolulu/Waikiki

Well that would be true! Since I don't like their food I'd have to have a liquid dinner! BTW, the Boston's in Kaneohe has a new owns and not part of the original group. Fabulous pizzas and some specialty pies as well we had a beautiful one last night!

Birthday Dinner for 8 people in Honolulu/Waikiki

I am not so sure you could do the !00/pp at Michel's or Hoku's. Remember too Hoku's you have to wear long pants which might not be an issue. I would agree with you on 12th Ave. or even Tiki's.

Itinerary Review (Kauai, Oaho, Big Island)

Roy owns all of the Hawaii locations. The mainland are franchised through another corporation. This I know from the horse's mouth as it were.

Culver's in Wrigleyville

I have enjoyed a "butter" burger from time to time when I come back to visit, their fries were good too. Each time I visited a Culver's the people were super nice and friendly that worked there and it was always clean.

Gee, I've been waiting myself to hear from others. What I have heard is that lunch is a much better deal. Hopefully others will tell us their experiences!

Roy's locations

No Beach Chick, it is in Waikoloa at the King's Shops center. I just had an impromptu afternoon in Waikiki spur of the moment as it turned out. Had a martini, ribs, a burger and a great Rose', both Diva and Lou were there so it was a great afternoon! I really like the burger when at the bar.

Roy's locations

My favorite is Waikiki, the staff is magnificent, the food is truly wonderful. I have been to the one on the Big Island many times however and like it as well.

Maui Here's our homemade guide to places we like

When we had lunch at Halekulani he was about to undergo a major remodel at his home, really major. Perhaps he's just enjoying all AZ has to offer during the construction.

Maui Here's our homemade guide to places we like

You've put out a great list! I am fan of almost all of them. Some I haven't been to yet! The fish market is a great suggestion, we have had wonderful things from there. I didn't find Honu that expensive, just my opinion. We were lucky, the kitchen sent out an Ahi pizza for us which was just killer. I really enjoy a nice lunch at Sea House, so relaxing and the staff is so friendly. Thanks for the list! Were you just there?

HWAK 3/23/14

Yes, the mai tai's were fabulous, the potato chips always wonderful. And we also had the poke with taro chips and the pipikaula quesadillas, delicious as well! We had a great table along the water side away from other people. Perfect night!

Purple Pig

That's a valid point. We were there one time and there was a baby in a stroller and it was extremely crowded and the servers/runners had a very difficult time. One of your other alternative ideas would probably be better. Even other patrons had difficulty maneuvering around the stroller. And yes, it is really noisy in there no one would probably realize the baby was there!

Unique/Fun Western Suburbs

Wow! That's a great recommendation Nxtasy about Lemon Tree. I'll be in Naperville again for my annual visit in May and staying in a hotel for 2 weeks. This market will be perfect since the hotel has a kitchen! Looking forward to eating and shopping there. Waterleaf is at my alma mater although things sure have changed since I went there in 1974! I am going to finally get there to dine this trip. Thanks for those great suggestions for the OP. Much aloha!

Hawaiian pizza in Hawaii/kauai

Brick Oven. We now have one in Kaneohe I've yet to try it. The owner's of the Boston's in Kaneohe have really stepped up the quality, atmosphere and service. We had the most amazing pizza from there a week ago. They have some new great offerings as well. Don't know if they have this pineapple/ham concoction.

CSA's on Oahu?

I think we talked about this but I do Kula Fields direct to my door from Maui. They offer 3 size boxes weekly, every two weeks and customize to your tastes. Been doing this for about two years and love the convenience and flexibility. Call or email me with question. Unrelated but Lewer's Lounge was lovely tonight with Robert Cazimero's Jazz show, just awesome.

El ideas chef "gift"?

You're welcome! So far I've made treats for dogs, cats, birds and rabbits! Chefs are always just so amazed and appreciative that someone thinks of their pets who often have quality time in smaller doses or see mostly other family members than the chef themselves. I've also made wine cork wreaths for restaurants which they like either for the restaurant itself or their offices. Once I did a painting of a signature hole at a country club that I know a certain chef is a member of for his 50th birthday.

That is very true. Restaurants/chefs always appreciate a note of thanks the old fashioned way. I do this most of the time and I hear back that they read the note to staff and it is always nice if you remember certain names that made an impression upon you. For favorite restaurants that we go to frequently I find out what type of pets they have and if there are any food allergies and either make them treats or send on a toy for their pet at Christmastime.

Honolulu Trip in March staying at RH - help me fill in trip intinerary

Well if I go (it's a thing from church) I'll let you know. The MIL is here then so we may not be able to make the early tour……………I just think back to what a wasteland it was for dining here back from when I moved here in 1985 and I did find his place a beacon of light, plus we could walk there from that apartment we lived in Makiki……I think the whole of it would fit in the dining room you hung out in at my house during the Christmas party!

Honolulu Trip in March staying at RH - help me fill in trip intinerary

I was just reading about a new restaurant there called "Schooner's" which from their website looks pretty nice. Right on the water, nice setting. The chef is Phillip Paolo which if anyone remembers, he had a restaurant of his name about 27 years ago or so on Beretania. Amazing food there. I am going to PH on the 26th and thinking of having my lunch there. I'll let everyone know if I do.

Honolulu Trip in March staying at RH - help me fill in trip intinerary

What? 'Fraid?! Someone once told me I'm somewhat "direct"……………Even in Chicago at really fancy places we just go as we are/would be here and just march right in, get the best service and have a wonderful time. All my Chicago friends say "you can't go to that (food) event you don't have the right clothes." Au Contraire, we just go and end up meeting everyone, hang out and are always glad we went. I am thinking of the jazz show with the MIL……...

No definitely not shorts/slippers. They have a jazz show featuring Robert Cazimero that looks like a nice night. Somehow we get let in all over! Not sure why!

Kona coffee variability

I work almost next to Morning Brew in Kailua and they have a huge following. They have great coffee but I'm not so thrilled about their food, it's a lot of things they just make "semi-homemade" from Costco. They have indoor and outdoor seating and also serve beer and wine.

Scott always has a nice aloha shirt or some silk shirt on, untucked with nice denim pants, last time I wore velvet leggings, a leopard print shirt and sandals. Mostly how we dress sometimes I might have a dress on. Never a problem in fact everyone is super nice to us!
