This is absolutely correct regarding the prime rib. Great tip! |
|

SANSEI is the spelling and it was fabulous this past weekend. I ate there twice. I will post pictures tomorrow. Great service especially laudable as it was the Kapalua WIne & Food Festival and the resort was jammin' everywhere. Hats off to them and their chefs. |

Haleiwa Joe's in Kaneohe is the only game in town for locals to celebrate, enjoy, go out. They have Aloha Hour which always has a line. It's a beautiful setting, lovely. A problem I have is that when it rains a lot during the day the evening atmosphere is perfumed with the smell of old cushions on the chairs and stale carpeting. I don't mind carry out. Their prime rib is amazing! Go for that. I have always had good service with sincerity. We just got a Teddy's Bigger Burger and that is a welcome addition. Sumo Ramen is always solid and consistent. Heei'a Pier is a good choice as well, I I know there is not a lack of consensus on this but I give them 2 thumbs up. |

I have heard that from people at church who go there regularly. I did always enjoy their special noodles and would get trays of them for parties here. Another place I've not been to is Kin Wah. When I visit my insurance agent parking is always an issue since folks eat there after funerals at Hawaiian Memorial Park. What would I order there? |

I should try Pah Ke again. I wasn't that thrilled with it the times I did eat there or carry out. It's only a mile away so maybe one night or day for lunch I'll try it again. I'm encouraged by the posts! |

I have gone and it is still great. While I love Mark I don't think that his departure was the death knell for HP. They have fresh fish almost always and their luau stew is fabulous. I love their Patty Melt as well. Please continue to support them, it's a great experience and a nice outpost here on the WW side. |

Anniversary Dinner in Honolulu/Oahu I think the best known is Kaumakapili Church's luau in the summer. |

Anniversary Dinner in Honolulu/Oahu I sent you a 'test' email earlier today. BTW, I heard that Hope Chapel Olomana is having a benefit luau, $20.00 ticket for all you can eat or $25.00 at the door. It is coming up on church luau season and this is the first one I've heard of so far. I also recently had a yummy lunch at town, the salad with fish was fabulous (fish can be added) as well as a wonderful fish entree with tomato vinaigrette with grilled polenta. A nice rose' topped it off! |

Anniversary Dinner in Honolulu/Oahu I have Hunt's email but not yours, let us all know! :-) |

Anniversary Dinner in Honolulu/Oahu I'm in! |

What foods might I miss moving from DC to Oahu? Hunt, many many tribes make that fry bread my Oneida tribe does as do many many others. It tastes just wonderful and could pass for the Navajo as it has become to be known. It is a most amazing world we live in! :-) |

What foods might I miss moving from DC to Oahu? Au contraire my friend. Fry Bread in all it's authenticity can be had probably one time of year for sure at the Thomas Square Pow Wow and maybe also at the one in Kapiolani Park. I've been to them and I know. Being Native American myself I can attest to this being authentically delicious! :-) And New Eagle does have a great Philly Cheesesteak as mentioned by Indelibledotink. Also in Windward Mall there is a place with really good Philly sandwiches. |

Where to you go for Portuguese Bean Soup and why? Certainly not BCD at least in Kailua. I prefer to make my own with NS Cattle Co. Portuguese sausage, watercress using Bev Gannon's recipe from the Haliimaile General Store cookbook, winnah's every time! |

There is parking but not necessarily right in front of if in farther parts of the lot. Sometimes it is possible to get parking right in front but not often. You might have to walk a bit. You can buy bottled beer and they give you a brown paper bag to wrap it around so you can drink it there. Lately they have a lot of fresh fish for both breakfast and lunch. They post on FB so you might want to check out their page if you are so inclined. |

I find your comment lacking any sort of credibility beyond negativity with no back up. I told the Chowhound team my concerns and they didn't respond. I'm disappointed with them. Sansei is a really nice place and I have had many wonderful meals there I can provide details unlike you. |

Well I probably will. I do enjoy the conviviality and genuine care/rapport with the staff at Galena Garlic Co. Maybe I'll share my purchases b/w both. I love that they are growing garlic and using it in their retail environment. |
|

I have found wonderful spices and oils/vinegars at Galena Garlic Company. Locations in Geneva and Galena. My annual trip from Hawaii finds me in Geneva to stock up! I also get some items from the Penzey's in Naperville where I stay when in the area. |

Gee, I can't figure out what happened! Here is the picture I thought I posted first. Turns out it was the table of food that came through. Here is the take out area of dim sum, there were lots of people who came in and left with bags of food. I noticed too lots of big carry out orders leaving the restaurant as well. It is obvious for lunch you have to go really early or carry out. |
|
|
I don't know, I think dinner too but here's the phone number. Oh, I kept trying to post the picture of the table but it wouldn't go through. Hence, the picture of the take out area only. Definitely go! (808) 538-1088 |

So I went yesterday for lunch. There were 5 of us and we had the large round table in the back. The entire table was covered in food at one point. I can't tell you everything that we ate nor the names. One of the guests eats there all the time and he just reeled off items to the server in rapid fire. I include 2 pictures. One is of the table with almost all of the food (more kept arriving) and the other is the carry out area when you walk in. I do know we had these crispy little pockets that had shrimp inside that they mixed sugar and a mayonnaise type sauce for dipping. We had these little filled pockets of chives with that yummy house made chili sauce (Russkar you were right, that sauce is amazing!). We had the ong chou, beef with crispy noodle cake. Some sort of seafood package with crab, & shrimp. A scallop dish. EVERYTHING was delicious! I was most impressed. Sorry for the lack of complete detail. I parked right up from there in one of those pay/park places. It was $5.00 for 2 hours which I used up the entire time. The meters were all 1 hour and I didn't want to have to go in and out. We got there at 11:30 and within minutes the place was completely full. Nice server and I also enjoyed the tea. |

I don't know for sure but a good place to ask might be the Honolulu Chocolate Company in Ward Center. Neiman's has some good ones pre-packaged. |

I haven't tried it but in January I did a walk through and thought it would be a nice place for a drink with a great view. |

Hawaii Vacation- help! escaping cruise food Well it's the "only game in town" for our side especially for local people. I live down the road and only go there if someone is going to the airport early in the evening and a fast close meal is needed. I do like their prime rib but was not feeling well so that was out. I don't like the smell of the place when there is rain as everything absorbs the moisture and it smells musty. The people who work there are nice and that's a plus. They always have a line of people waiting to get in at happy hour or I think they call it "aloha hour." You are right, change is unavoidable. |

Hawaii Vacation- help! escaping cruise food Well only when I have to be! No need for apologies Beach Chick! Only Hunt has met me IRL at the Halekulani. Did you see the news, Bob McGee has left the Whole Ox. Good luck to him in his new ventures. I totally loved that burger! I did not like the whole onion slices so they would mince them up very finely for me and it was so good! On another note I have to say that Haleiwa Joe's did not show well last week. Their burger was less than memorable and their baked potato was just a microwaved soggy specimen. The spinach salad was still good however. |

Hawaii Vacation- help! escaping cruise food Actually I'm female! But she's doing great! Saw her a week ago. The kitchen just poured out the love and creativity. I gotta say that Duroc pork chop is just amazing. If you go try the lobster appetizer with port syrup and rosemary butter! It's baked in an escargot dish, piping hot and needs bread to just soak up all that yummy sauce! I've been once a month so far this year. Also pictured the blackend ahi and the misoyaki butterfish. I remember back when Roy and his band would play events, such fun! |

Hawaii Vacation- help! escaping cruise food Really? No Kaua'i? That's odd. But if you are there the Feral Pig is very close to where you will be in port, I highly recommend it! If you have a car and drive to the north shore I just had lunch (and wrote a post) about Luibueno it was really good. I do not like Haleiwa Joe's there - I have one near the 'hood and only carry out in Kaneohe. Yes, most people go to the shrimp trucks but I just cannot get behind sitting at a picnic table (unless it's Whole Ox in Kakaako) with a bunch of strangers and lots of flies. That's just me. You are very lucky to go on the cruise! You will have lots of fun I'm sure! Welcome to Hawaii! Since you are in Waikiki I would go to Roy's. I've been there a lot in the last few weeks and every time I'm completely absorbed in the menu and have a hard time deciding what to have. |

Thanks guys! I am really looking forward to this lunch! If you both like it "I'm In!" I'll let you know. I am interested in that crispy eggplant. Hopefully that will make up for the parking! The people I'm going with eat there often and I think I'm just going to defer to their expertise! |

I'm going for lunch next week, never been there. Can anyone tell me what I should order? I have no idea where to park either! Chinatown is not normally in my radar! Thanks everyone! |

I had a wonderful lunch at Luibueno this week. We started with their chips and salsa, a huge basket of really great crispy warm slightly salty chips. We decided to order the side of guacamole which was a very large bowl of chunky beautiful guac for just $6.00. For drinks our table had the Cadillac Margarita, and two Sangrias (I had the embellished version with a float of tequila.) We moved on to entrees of carnitas ( a very generous portion, crisp, juicy packed with flavor) which included a choice of corn or flour tortillas, refried beans and rice I think it was $17.00 definitely a great value. I had the ala carte fresh grilled ahi burrito with lots of yummy black beans and 2 sauces, 2 nice long pieces of fish. Our other diner had the taco entree (2) which I think was $11.00, she had the fish of the day which was maui, grilled instead of the blackened. They're nice sized tacos with rice and beans. Our server was really really good, she followed our lead and offered great advice on the menu when asked. She was great to have as a representative of the restaurant. Everything was clean including the bathroom. It was a later lunch, we got there about 1:30 and there was still a good crowd. I would definitely go back and recommend it highly. |
