Best place for a pint of cider in Cobble Hill area?

I have a friend visiting next weekend who is enamored with hard cider - and not being much of a cider drinker myself, I am not sure what places (if many) carry cider on tap.

Recommendations, please! Thank you.

wedding gift - restaurant gift card suggestions?

Hi all,

My friends live in Chicago and I'd like to get them a gift certificate to a nice restaurant as a wedding gift. I'm looking to spend $100 on the gift certificate, but I've noticed that many places (such as the girl and the goat) don't have gift cards readily available online - which is to be expected. Does anyone have any restaurant recs that I can look into?

I'd also be open to getting them a gift card to a nice wine/cheese shop as well.

Thanks so much for helping me out.

cambridge/somerville dinner?

Second the Garden at the Cellar. Trina's Starlite Lounge is good too. The Independent in Union Sq - sit in the bar.

Looking for a dressy but affordable restaurant in Boston

The Ten Tables in Cambridge was a great spot for my birthday dinner (with 7 people) last year. Some people were dressed up and some were casually dressed. I also agree with Gaslight and Helmand and the Franklin Cafe (both). I'm unable to think of anything new to add, as most places that jump to mind don't truly fit in the price range, but if you were willing to travel out to Needham, Sweet Basil is delicious and BYO - and dressing up there wouldn't be too strange.

sushi for 8th graders

Hi all, thanks so much for the suggestions. It is a group of 4 students and 3 teachers (7 total). I love the idea of Cambridge Culinary to make sushi as a big year end goal to work towards! We will get permission slips and take them in a car, but don't want to travel too far. We are taking them for a late lunch on a Friday (when we have a shorter day at school). Thanks for the idea about reminding the parents and students about the raw foods. I love sushi myself and I'm excited to share it with this adventurous group!

We are coming from East Boston, if that helps. We might go with Fugakyu after all. I want them to have a great experience and I agree that perhaps a cheaper place could not produce a lifetime love (or even interest) of sushi.

sushi for 8th graders

Some fellow teachers and I are taking some of my students to sushi as a reward that they have earned. None of them have tried sushi before and we want to give them the full experience (they will probably not order anything too crazy, however).

Can anyone reccomend a good sushi place that also has good atmosphere? I like the private rooms at Fugakyu in terms of it being a unique setting, but would enjoy a place that's a little less pricey.

Thanks so much!

Franklin Cafe in Southie open yet?

Curious if the new location is open. It was supposed to open Nov. 15 but have not been by yet and their website does not have this location listed. Any info is welcome!

Harvest tonight - any menu recs?

Thank you.

Harvest tonight - any menu recs?

I'm taking a friend to Harvest tonight for her birthday (her choice). I've never eaten here before, just had calamari at the bar which was decent. I'd love any food recs - I am open to all kinds of food and have no dietary restrictions. Thank you!

Donna's in East Boston

It is near the Orient Heights T stop - corner of Bennington and Saratoga.

Donna's in East Boston

I went for the first time two Saturdays ago. It is definitely still open and is a decent diner experience. Friend had french toast and loved it. I had poached eggs, excellent spicy homefries and wheat toast. Coffee was ok.

Magnolia, Inman Sq.

They have Abita Purple Haze there, last I checked.

Con Sol: a hidden gem (Portuguese)

Went last night and while the atmosphere was cozy, the food left a lot to be desired in terms of seasoning and freshness of the food. Nice person working there and freshly made sangria, but it was just not that worthy of any mention on this board.

Coffee House/Cafe "Crema" now open in Harvard Square!

Hi Chipper,
It is next to/near the Bertucci's on Brattle St. Kind of across from the hardware store and near EMS.

Pizza Dough Sources now that Bertucci's is Closed

I was in Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge this afternoon and they carry pizza dough. I think the Formaggio Kitchen in the South End might carry it too? Worth a shot.

Alone in Cambridge Sunday Night

I'll second Garden at the Cellar. I think you can eat downstairs at the bar if you'd like too. Affordable and delicious. Do not go to Grafton St.

Chowish Spots Near Cambridgeside Galleria

Second the vote for Helmand. Excellent Afghan food.

Best sandwich... ever?

I love the Hubbard Park sandwich at Darwin's on Mt. Auburn St in Cambridge. It has hummus, carrots, avocados, tomatoes, green apple slices, sprouts and honey mustardand you can order it with cheddar (which I recommend). It has the right combination of crunch and flavors...mm so delicious! I personally think the pepperjack bread is best but it is only available on weekends.

Group birthday dinner in Cambridge??

You might want to try Ole in Inman Square. I think the food is tasty and definitely different than the usual Mexican. With a group, you can order off the tapas menu and come out (with cocktails or wine) at about $40 per person. I loved the dessert that was some sort of fried burrito I think, but I cannot find it on their online menu. http://www.olegrill.com/dinnermenu.pdf We had a group of about 10 and there was a group of about 20 there as well and it was festive but not terribly loud.

Finding Cadbury Flake candy bar in Boston area?

Cardullo's in Harvard Square had them last time I checked.

Please post one NEW chowish find

I second the vote for Dough. http://www.doughpizza.com/ The Vermonter sandwich is my favorite : turkey, smoked gouda, bacon, sliced green apple, red onion and served on extra thick multi grain bread...mmm!!

What's the buzz on metropolis?

I heartily second the risotto recommendation. I've had brunch here 4 times and every time it has been delicious and filling. I've not had to wait before 11:30 am, but arriving after I've had to.

Lower Newbury area lunch-Panificio?

I have not been impressed by this Panificio. I've had a good butternut squash soup there, but many of the sandwiches leave a lot to be desired. The Beacon Hill location is far superior. That being said, I have not given it a shot in the past three months, so perhaps it has improved and the outdoor seating is a definite plus.

Sunday night drinks - Cambridge

Thank you! I live right in the middle of it, so I was planning on walking. Does anyone have an opinion of Noir? Haven't tried the food there but the patio looks nice.

Sunday night drinks - Cambridge

Looking for a good place to have a drink or two on Sunday night with a friend. We'd love to sit outside, preferrably in the Harvard/Central square areas. We'd also like to get a light bite to eat. Cambridge Common has outdoor seating and you can also drink beer, but the past two times I have eaten there have left something to be desired.

Any and all recommendations are welcome. Thank you!

Romantic, but affordable, date spot?

Second Franklin Cafe. Very affordable and I've never had a bad meal there. Good drinks at the bar while you (inevitably) wait for your table.

dinner tonight - a place like Franklin Cafe?

We went to the Audubon - reasonably crowded around 8 pm on Saturday night. Had the shrimp skewers as an app - good but the dipping sauce was a little sweet. My friend had the tuna steak which I tasted and it was delicious, perfectly done (slightly rare). I had the steak with blue cheese butter and asparagus which was also delicious. Service was great and we shared a good bottle of wine and the comfortable atmosphere. Thanks to all!

dinner tonight - a place like Franklin Cafe?

Thank you for all of the suggestions!

dinner tonight - a place like Franklin Cafe?

A friend and I are having dinner tonight. I'd love to eat a place similiar in price (and tastiness!) to the Franklin Cafe. We have already eaten there together a few times and loved it but are looking for something new. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Need a yummy birthday cake. In the shape of a car or motorcycle please...

Sweet Tooth bakery makes delicious cakes. They made an extremely unique cake with a chianti bottle rising out of the surface for my friend's 30th - even added small details such as having the vintage year as 1977 (birth year). They can get pricey, however. This cake fed over 40 people easily.
