50th Birthday Dinner?

Thanks for the suggestions!

50th Birthday Dinner?

Hi all,

Would love your opinions of where to go for my husband's big birthday in two weeks. We love food and wine and are willing to splurge. Is Menton worth it? Is L'Espalier as special as it used to be in its old digs? Is Clio too into foam?

Thanks!

Killer Dessert?

Wow--sounds amazing. Thanks.

Killer Dessert?

Am planning a big night out to celebrate a friend's 40th birthday. She really loves dessert. Any suggestions for a special restaurant that also will have a killer dessert?

Thanks!

Berkshire's Best Dinner Spot?

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and suggestions. It sounds as though no one has eaten at Mepal Manor...Old Inn on the Green sounds like best option if we arrive late and don't want to drive too far. I'll save all these other suggestions for another visit. Glad to hear Cafe Adam keeps improving!

Berkshire's Best Dinner Spot?

Hi Chows,

Am headed to the Berkshires for a mid-week visit in October with two other couples and we're wondering where to eat...we might stay at Mepal Manor in New Marlborough and I hear it serves dinner on Wed. and Thursday nights. Has anyone been? Is it good, or should be try elsewhere, like Old Inn On the Green? Is that spot still good?

I loved Allium last time I went, thought a dinner at Cafe Adam was fine (kind or marred by the waitress being on some kind of chemical stimulant), and had a great lunch at Nudel when they first opened...hear they no longer serve lunch, just dinner, but am worried that without reservations, it could be risky for three couples, even mid-week.

Any thoughts? Thanks so much. (Oh, and as much as we love Blantyre and Wheatleigh, we're looking for something a bit less fancy.)

Thank you! I'll check it out.

Favorite Cheese Shops?

I frequent Formaggio's in the Boston area, but would love to discover some great cheese shops in New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont...any suggestions? Thanks.

Best Bites for 4 days in Toronto (including New Years)

Once again, thank you to everyone who offered suggestions. I just booked New Year's Eve at Splendido and made Jan. 1 reservations for a dim sum brunch at Lai Wah Heen. I think I'll keep the rest of our time open, given all this eating!
I really appreciate all your help with all this and can't wait for our visit!

Best Bites for 4 days in Toronto (including New Years)

Hi all,

My husband and I are visiting Toronto for the first time this December (including New Years) We adore great food, but are not fans of fussy, molecular gastronomy-style cooking. I guess we like upscale bistro food using local, in-season ingredients, served in a warm and friendly atmosphere with great wine. I also love chocolate and great coffee. Any suggestions for where to go, including NY Eve, which doesn't have to be a fancy-schmancy affair?

I did some preliminary research and was intrigued by:
Melena
Earth
Spendid
Local Kitchen Wine & Bar
Paramour
Guu Izakay
Soma for hot chocolate

Thanks so much!

Northhampton Eats

Thanks to all of you who answered. I should have checked my spelling (gulp).

Northhampton Eats

Hi all,

Am headed to Northhampton for the first time this weekend and am wondering where to eat on Saturday night--love good food and wine--coffee on Sunday and perhaps a fun, casual lunch. Noticed last post on the board was in 2004...thanks for any advice.

Framingham for birthday lunch

Am taking a friend to Garden in the Woods for her birthday and wanted to find a nice spot to treat her to lunch after our visit. We're not looking for a fancy meal, but a cheerful spot with high quality entree salads, soups, etc...any thoughts?

Veal cheeks?

Recently had some incredible veal cheeks at Troquet, as part of the veal tasting (sweetbreads and the loin). They were rich and velvety.

B-day Spot for Foodie that's Cozy Yet Elegant

RGR, thank you so much for getting back to me. We've been to Veritas and loved it. What do you think of Olana and Scarpetta? I've managed to snag a reservation at both...

B-day Spot for Foodie that's Cozy Yet Elegant

Thank you, RGR for your thoughts. We've been to Fleur de Sel and, you're right, it was exactly the kind of place I was hoping to find. We've also been to Toqueville, not too long ago, so I was hoping to go somewhere different. We love Blue Hill and, although it's bigger, we also loved Ouest. Any other thoughts?

B-day Spot for Foodie that's Cozy Yet Elegant

My wife is a food writer and I want to surprise her with dinner this coming Saturday at a great restaurant that is intimate, yet elegant. We just decided to come to NYC from Boston, so I realize reservations may be hard to come by...she isn't the kind of person that wants to eat at places like Per Se, but prefers more cozy spots, like the defunct L'impero or Toqueville, etc... Any thoughts?

Where's Your Favorite Place for Brunch?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. They all sound different in their own way and very enticing!

Where's Your Favorite Place for Brunch?

I am still searching for a place that offers something special, beyond your basic eggs and French toast. I'd love to hear what others have discovered...

Favorite Signature Dishes?

Thank you all for such great suggestions. We'll be set for months to come!

Wow--is that an appetizer?

Favorite Signature Dishes?

Thank you--we've never been there!

Favorite Signature Dishes?

When my wife and I come into Boston from the North Shore, usually for an occasion, we tend to go to the same places and order favorite dishes, like the lobster Savannah at Locke-Obers the Oak Room's steak for two. She has a birthday coming up and I'd like to branch out a bit. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Best Chocolate Chip Cookie in the Boston area?

Clear Flour Bakery in Brookline has terrific c.c. cookies--they're oversized, made with butter, crisp on the edges and a little chewy in the center and generously studded with darh chocolate chunks. Definitely hits the spot!

Beggar's Chicken

Thanks so much!

Beggar's Chicken

Does anyone make Beggar's Chicken around here? I had it once in Hong Kong and it was to die for!

Best wine lists?

You make a really good point, jibourgeois. I guess what I was hoping to discover were some unsung heroes--those restaurants that have made a real effort to create an interesting list, whether it's from a certain part of the world or it has something special, like a generous selection of oranic and bio-dynamic wines (such as the list at Oleana, as Litchick pointed out earlier).
