Pumpkin Ravioli
This is the time of year that we often see pumpkin ravioli on menu's. My wife loves it and as we are coming into the city in the next couple of weeks I would like to try a restaurant that chowhounders find has an exceptional pumpkin ravioli dish. Price point: up to approx. $25 ish for the entree only.
Sharing Entre's
My daughter and six work friends are going into the city in early May. They would like a restaurant located between approx. 15th street and 47th street, and west of Broadway. Here's the catch. They want a place where they can share entre's ( is that possible) maybe purchase three entre's and three apps to share between themselves., or just get 6-7 apps. Any cuisine except asian. They would like to keep it at $ 20-25 per person excluding drinks, tax and tip.Any suggestions??? thanks
Rec's for group around Canal and Broadway area
Have a group of 6-7 people coming in sometime in early October. They want to shop/ window shop in the Little italy,Chinatown area. We need two rec's. First, a pastry/ coffee shop in the Little Italy area for a morning stop. Secondly, a lunch rec. Lunch does not have to be in the immediate area, but that would be nice. They are willing to walk or take a short subway ride to another area for a more worth while lunch. Any cuisine is ok, certainly Italian is welcome. Price range: $15- $25 PP without alcohol and tip. thanks
Rolfs report
Orginally we were going to stop for drinks, see the decor and have dinner elsewhere, but decided that if we could get reservations we would give it a try. We were able to get a early time slot for this past Sat.(4:30). Forget about sitting at the bar, as it was packed three deep at the time we arrived. I don't think anyone else would have fit as this place is pretty small with tight seating. Anyway we were seated shortly after we arrived. The Christmas holiday decor is quite extraordinary and festive. I've never seen anything like it at Christmas time in a restaurant. Now for the food. I enjoyed it. It was not a great meal, but good and the portions were large. We left there very full. The German beers are excellent. We had one appitizer, the potatoe pancakes and they were excellent. Two entree's, I had the saurbraten with red cabbage which I enjoyed and have not had in quite a few years so it was hard for me to compare. Again a large portion. My wife had a pork loin dish which was just ok, nothing special. Two large draft German beers, a coke and one shared dessert. Total without tip came to $97. 00. Our server was very nice and helpful. One other thing, It was very warm in the restaurant, probably from the 75,000 lights hanging off the ceiling and walls. I had to take my sweater off. Yes , it may be pricy for the food but you're also paying for the festive holiday decorations. It's a restaurant that maybe you go to once to see what it is about, so you can say you were there. It certainly will put you in the holiday mood. I'm glad we went.
Baccala Salad
Don't know specifically, but I do not know too many people that are even familiar with that dish. My family has eaten it at Christmas for many many years. It is something I look forward to every year. I think there are various versions of it. I have never seen anything like what we have at any restaurant in NYC. If you find a place that serves it please post it as I would be interested in checking it out and comparing it to our version.
Restaurant close to Rolf's in Gramercy
The suggestions look great. I will check out the menu's on menupages and select one from there. I've alway been happy in the past with hound rec'c.thanks
Restaurant close to Rolf's in Gramercy
I will be bringing my family into the city for our annual viewing of the Christmas tree at Rock Center. Heard alot about Rolfs for its awsome display of Christmas lights. We would like to stop in to see it and possibly have a drink. I am not so sure I want to have dinner there as it seems most of the hound reviews on its food are not so favorable. That being said, can I get some rec's on restaurants within a 3-4 block distance in any direction from Rolf's. Any cuisine except Chinese and around $40-$45 per person without drinks and tip.
thank you
Lunch around west 19th street
Myself and a few employee's will be coming into the city in the next week or so to do a job. We will be in the area of west 19th street, between 7th and 8th. I'll take them to lunch. Any rec's for any reasonably priced places ( approx. $ 15-25 /person, no alcohol ) that are reasonably close by, maybe 3-4 blocks any direction. Any cuisine is fine.
thanks
Good eats by javits center
Have a business seminar at the Javits center next week. It will be a group of 5-6 people and we will be having lunch in the city. Would like reasonable ( $ 15-20 ) per person without drinks or tip. A good tavern might fit the bill or a Italian or American cuisine restaurant within the price constraints. We would like to stay within a short walking distance from the center, maybe 5-6 blocks in any direction. Your thoughts please. Thanks
Chowhound team , can you help me
Previously on my screen I had a little icon that told me if there were any new posts on a topic since I last visited. This is very helpful to have so as not to keep rechecking posts you have already read. My problem is that I lost this feature and can't seem to figure out how to get it back. I'm not real computer savy, so maybe you can direct me.
thanks, laurian
"The Harrison" - Review
My wife and I sent my son and his new bride of one year to NYC for a over-nighter downtown and dinner at The Harrison. I received some great rec's from the chowhounds which I value greatly, but I've passed by this restaurant on a few occassions and always wanted to give it a try. I did some checking and found most of the recent reviews were favorable. Also the fact that the restaurant was close to their hotel came into consideration on its selection over a couple of others that were more of a walk.
They had a early reservation (6:00) and were seated promptly. They said the service was cordial and friendly with no rush for them to finish their meal. The restaurant was getting full and busy by the time they left which was around 8:15pm. They were able to carry on a conversation without yelling and the tables were not real close together.
Their meal consisted of 2 apps, 2 entrees, 2 vegetable sides, 1 dessert shared and a bottle of moderately priced wine. The restaurant also provided them each a complimentary glass of dessert wine for their anniversary celebration. They were both very happy with their meals all the way through. I asked my son about the portion size, as I had read in a older re view, maybe 2006 that the portions were small, but he said no, that they were of nice size and they did not leave hungry. They both suggested I give it a try next time I'm in the city. The total bill, with tax and tip was $165. I hope this helps others who may have been considering trying this restaurant.
going to bluenote for jazz, need rec,s nearby
We will be going to Bluenote for a evening of jazz in Dec. It is on West 3rd Street between 6th and MacDougal. We are interested in something very close to the venue , maybe 3-4 blocks in any direction. Preferably Italian or American or even maybe a great sandwich shop. Looking to spend up to around $20-$30 p/p without drinks, tax or tip.. Help me out hounds. thanks
Opinions on "The Harrison"
Thinking of sending my son and his wife here for a cozy, conversation friendly (relatively quiet) romantic dinner. What are your thoughts on this choice. Seems to have received good reviews, but would like to hear from somebody who may have dined there recently.
thanks
sons first year wedding anniversary dinner
My sons first year wedding anniversary is coming up in late November. My wife and I would like to send them to the city for a celabratory romantic dinner. Any location in the city is fine and the cuisine is flexable, just no Asian or Indian. We have to keep the price moderate, so I am thinking somewhere under $175 with a moderately priced bottle of wine.We are just looking for something cozy, romantic with good food. A fireplace would be a plus. Your help is appreciated. Last year my son and I went on a father/son dinner to Keens prior to his wedding on your recomendations and we had a great dinner..
thanks
Boothbay Harbor
Wife and I are heading to Boothbay Harbor next week for a few days. Would be interested in rec's for lunch/dinner.. Nothing overly expensive but certainly good. Lunch $ 20-30 for two and dinner $60-80 for two without drinks. We certainly are interested in almost all types of seafood fare. We will also stay one night in Kennebunkport, so a rec for there would be helpful. thanks
Sunday restaurant around Madison and 60's
I will be in the city this Sunday for lunch in the above mentioned area. any recs. I will be by myself. I am open to just about any cuisine and in the $30-40 price range without drinks. I'm thinking Sunday might be a tough day to find a open restaurant in the area. ??
Bistro vs. Brasserie: what's the difference?
The Chowhound Team split this question off from the Manhattan board
* * * * *
Help me out, I'm not sure of the difference between a bistro and a brasserie. Could you clarify that for me and others who may not know? thanks
which one would you choose
My daughter, boyfriend and another couple going into city tomorrow, Saturday for a comedy club act near west 53rd and Broadway. Thinking of trying one of the following restaurants. Would like chowhounders opinions on what they thought of the choices. Here they are: Basilica, Amarone, Rino Trattoria, and Rachel's. If you have other suggestions feel free to rec.
thanks
Roberto Passon report
Went with family this past wednesday. We made reservations based on chowhound posts. We were there early, 5:15 and were seated promptly. Service was quick with bread and drinks coming soon after being seated. We ordered salads, three different ones and they were all very good. Our main courses were pumpkin ravioli, fettuccine with wild mushroom sauce, marinated venison, and linguini with clams. All were very good. I , myself had the venison and I tasted the pumpkin ravioli. I liked them both very much especially the ravioli. I heard no complaints from the others on their dishes. I should also add that the portions were rather large, surely not small.
We finished up with three desserts and coffee. It was a very enjoyable dinner and we would go again. Total for five adults excluding tip was $171. Hope this helps others out who may be thinking of going. After leaving we joined the rush at Rockefeller Center to view the tree.
recent visit to keens
My son and I had a great dinner at keens a couple of weeks ago thanks to chowhounders suggestions. It was a final father/son dinner before our son got married last month. It was a perfect setting for such a dinner. We started off with the shrimp cocktail which was very good. My son had the prime rib and I went with the lamb chops. both dishes were excellent. Had a side of creamed spinich which tasted like my moms and we also had a potatoe side ( nothing special)For desert we both had the "cantina coffee ice cream" (spelling?)with a couple of drinks and glasses of wine, tax and tip it came to about $180. all in all a good choice. I will say although, that good steak houses in nyc are not cheap. from there we did a little bar hopping at the local establishments. it was fun.
rec's on what to have at Keens
Going to Keens in a couple of weeks with my son. Any favorite cuts of meat to have or anything in general to have there. what are your thoughts?
thanks
Father / Son Dinner Get Together
Thanks for the re-assurance. We will go to Keens. It won't be until the end of October, but I will let everyone know how it was.thanks again
Father / Son Dinner Get Together
I would like to take my son out for a night on the town before he gets married in November. Was thinking dinner then maybe a stop at a fun bar for a few drinks. Any location in Manhattan is ok. Preferred cuisine would be Italian, Seafood or a steak place ( I was thinking possibly Keens). Would like to keep the cost for dinner around $40-$60 per person not including drinks. How about a after dinner bar suggestion also. thanks alot. This may be our last time together before he takes the plunge!!
