Good LA spot for watching the Kentucky Derby?

Hey everyone - I'm new to LA and looking for a good bar or restaurant to watch the Derby this Saturday. Nothing fancy -- interested in some decent pub food and a mint julep or two, but would love to watch at a place that has a dedicated big screen and a crowd that's into the race, and not just somewhere that has it playing on a tiny set in the corner.

Any suggestions? Sorry if that's vague - still learning the city and don't know where to find the nicer, non-horrible sports bars in town. Thanks!

Times Square

Enthusiastic seconds for Vynl, Hell's Kitchen and Taboon. All very excellent and fairly reasonable.

The gut-busting Churrascaria Plataforma on 49th street might be a fun experience, also with kids in particular. I enjoy Molyvos for Greek. Fun brunch at Norma's in the Parker Meridian hotel. Haven't had too much luck with Italian in the neighborhood, though some of the 9th Avenue places are decent: I've enjoyed Cara Mia and Amarone. And for good old family style red sauce Italian there's Tony's Di Napoli on 43rd. Carmine's was also a good suggestion. Have fun!

Molyvos RW Review

I'd just offer the contrary opinion that I went to Molyvos for a previous restaurant week experience and had absolutely no problems. Great food and the service was attentive and helpful. So mitsy may have had a rare bad experience. Maybe the waiter got dumped earlier in the evening.

In general, the vast majority of my RW experiences have been positive, and, like dkstar said, it's a great way to sample a place that you're curious about without having to go in whole hog. If a RW dinner is good and the service is pleasant, I will almost certainly return to that restaurant to pay full price and experience the whole menu -- it's a win-win. Speaking of which, if you enjoy Greek/Mediterranean cuisine, my girlfriend and I had an astoundingly good RW dinner at Barbounia -- the food is excellent and the service was so good the waiters were actually encouraging people to order the RW menu because they were excited to have so many new customers coming in to try it out. Recommended.

Las Vegas - Italian restaurant for bachelor party?

Looking for a recommendation for a decent, good-for-groups Italian restaurant for an LV bachelor party dinner, about 20 guests. Price is not really an issue, but for this meal we're definitely more interested in a stuff-yer-face, family style red sauce Italian experience than a chic pricey haute cuisine meal. Strip or off strip also fine, with quality of food being the main concern.

Heard good things about Nora's Cuisine on W. Flamingo, but is it too small or inappropriate for large rowdy groups?

Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Lonesome Dove Western Bistro -- any reviews?

Sounds good to me -- thanks for sharing. I'll post my own thoughts when I make it over there to check it out.

Cool coffe shop to study in?

I'm a fan of Push Cafe on 3rd Ave between 22/23 Sts. I live in the neighborhood and frequently bring my laptop there to work during breakfast. Nice couches up front if you can snag 'em.

Sushi delivery in Hell's Kitchen

Thanks for all the suggestions -- I just had a very nice delivered lunch from Aki Sushi II. Great rolls and the food travels well. Will definitely give the other places a try, too. Thanks!

Il Mulino - tips for reservations?

Well, thanks for the warnings and suggestions -- I've read a lot of posts about Il Mulino on these very boards so I know there are a wide range of opinions. Seems to be pretty polarizing. Still, it's been on my list for awhile simply as a place to try, so perhaps it's just a matter of braving the busy signal after all. Regardless, I will consider myself duly warned.

East Village bests

Supper is a great choice - one of my East Village faves. I also like Mermaid Inn for seafood, and I'd recommend Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches for cheap ethnic snackfood -- great on the go.

For EV cocktails, I'm a dive bar guy myself. Grassroots Tavern and the even nastier Holiday Cocktail Lounge are both on St. Marks Place. Company bar is also a nice neighborhood spot for drinks, and Boxcar Lounge on Ave B has a great garden for daytime boozing.

Sushi delivery in Hell's Kitchen

It looks like this topic was addressed about a year ago, but places can come and go so quickly in this neighborhood that I thought it might be worth revisiting. I work in the West 50s and am chained to my desk during lunch. Would love to find a great (and preferably inexpensive, but I'm flexible) sushi place that delivers in the Hell's Kitchen area. Thanks in advance.

LES Outdoor Dining?

I'd second Loreley -- a great garden, and the brats and schnitzel are not half bad if you're into that kind of thing. Definitely a good place to hang out, especially during off-peak hours.

Good World Bar and Grill on Orchard St. has some interesting beers and food, and I think there's outdoor seating (but I'd confirm that before you take my word for it) and Tenement on Ludlow has a decent garden, too, but I can't vouch for the food.

Il Mulino - tips for reservations?

Attempting to make a reservation at Il Mulino, but I'm getting a little weary of listening to the busy signal for days on end. Anyone have any tips for making a reservation? Best times to call, how far in advance, etc? I've heard a good tactic is to drop in and make a reservation in person during lunchtime hours but so far I've been unable to do so because of work. Advice?
