Great steakhouse DC or VA

I am befuddled by the many recommendations of Ray's the Steaks in Courthouse. Having been there twice, I can tell you that it is a very mediocre restaurant. When it moved from the cozy little place in that little strip mall in Clarendon to this big restaurant in the current location, the steaks have gone seriously downhill. Last time I went, my NY strip was so lean and dry and it was almost inedible. My wife's filet mignon was tough as rubber. How you could make a filet mignon taste like rubber is beyond me. Dinner for two and a bottle of cheap wine came to $100 plus tips. It is one of most disappointing and over-rated restaurants in this area.

Sushi dinner - What to order?

Hey Melanie, believe it or not, I had just that combination (Gruner Veltliner and sashimi) last week.

Cursed - can no longer drink regular red wine!

If white wines don't bother you, then it is surely not sulfites, as it is in all wines, even organic ones.

It sounds like you have a histamines reaction. Try taking a Sudafed next time before you drink a red wine and see if it helps. As one ages, one could develop new or intensify allergies. If taking a Sudafed helps, you should consult your doctor to see if you have an allergy that could be treated.

wine and food pairings question

Don't forget because of the richness of the foie gras, it is usually prepared with a sweet sauce, so a dry Champagne wouldn't really work. In addition, since the foie gras is almost alwyas seared, a Sauternes, which often has a carmelized quality to it, works really well.

Having said that, I am not sure if one needs to drink any wine with foie gras at all. It is such a treat by itself. Also, at a restaurant, by the time you finished the foie gras, you have taken but two sips of the Sauternes, leaving you with almost a whole portion of the wine left. Drink that and it'll surely ruin your next wine. Oh, I guess you could save it for dessert. :)
