Tropiglace Ecuadorian Ice Cream Stamford CT

Anyone been here yet?

I heard that the family that opened this shop, has about 8 more ice cream shops back in Ecuador. Back in the 60's the Grandfather came up with his Ecuadorian version of American ice cream. They offer lots of tropical flavors like mango, lucuma, pineapple, and passion fruit. Sounds good to me!

Avventura Deli Waterbury CT

I was pleased to see a short story run about Avventura Deli in the Sunday NY Times.

Avventura has been one of my go to delis when I'm in the area (also Gaetano's in Stratford and Chaves in Bridgeport). Avventura uses high quality ingredients and they make everything fresh. Also a very nice old school Town Plot Italian neighborhood vibe, people are very friendly and laid back there.

I stick to the grinders. I've never tried the baked goods, though I've heard good things.

Mofungo?

You can get it at many places in Bridgeport.

The best is Restaurant Ramirez, a small Dominican place on East Main Street.

Best vegetarian option in non-vegetarian restaurant? FFD county

You don't mention which part of FFD county you are in, but both my recommendations will work in either the north or south part of the county.

Brazilian: Try one the restaurants that have buffets. They have rice and beans, tropical fruit, fried cassava, salads, plantains, and other options for vegetarians. And for the meat eater a selection of rotisserie meats. My go to spots in Bridgeport are El Pantanal and Terra Brasilis

Central American: For the veggie they can order a "tipico" which will have rice, refried beans, cream, plantains, egg, and cheese, Pupusa which is fried masa with cheese and/or beans inside, and maybe few other things like bean soup. The Guatemalan/Salvadoran place on Main St. in BPT is good. Lots of other little Central American places around FFD.

Where can I find good pupusas in southern CT?

AC,
Nothing going on in Bridgeport....maybe when the weather warms up and the soccer leagues start playing there will be some informal vendors.

Chips and Salsa in/near Fairfield?

Go to the International Farmers Market on Main Street in Bridgeport. They have a good selection of Mexican/Central American products. Buy some Salsa or Chimol and bring it home.

Had a chance to eat at the Chapincita on New Utrecht....not bad. They have a steam table set up in the back. Handmade tortillas which are nice.

Where can I find good pupusas in southern CT?

Here is an old thread about Salvadoran places in BPT.
chowhound.chow.com/topics/541227

Sadly the place with the best pupusas in Bridgeport closed downed recently. First Sabor Salvadoreno on Main Street moved up the street and shared space with a Jamaican restaurant. Then they finally kicked the bucket. Too bad.

One other Salvadoran place in Bridgeport nobody mentioned is Centro Americano Barbeque on East Main Street.

Not sure if it is still open but there used to be one on Campbell down the street from UNH in West Haven.

Vegetarian Food Bridgeport CT

I've been observing a small and growing vegetarian food scene here in Bridgeport.

The oldest is Bloodroot in the Black Rock section of the city. They have been around for years and have the most inventive menu. They are the place you want to go if you are looking for a nice sit down restaurant. They also put on some events and have a bookstore. Every vegetarian I've brought there over the years loves the place.

Shandal's Cafe on Capital Avenue is vegan. The place is tiny but makes up for it in heart. Shandal is probably the nicest chief/owner in all of CT. Everytime you go in there they make you feel at home. Many of the dishes are in the style of making tofu taste like meat which he really comes close to doing. I think his most popular dish is the BBQ tofu. For $6 you get to chose four items from the steam table. Also ask about the juice, they usually have something freshly made.

The newest place in the city is P1 Natural Juice on Main Street. They have been around for a few months now. Their specialty is juice. They have a good variety of fruits and vegetables to choose from. Lately I've been going for banana, pineapple, mango, and coconut milk. So good. They also have soups. Their ital stew is really, really good and very hearty during this cold weather. They keep telling me they are going to have a steam table with food but it still isn't in operation. Things tend to move very slowly there so keep that in mind if you visit.

I hope this trend continues. I think it is really good if people have an alternative to the many fast food places around here.

Lunch near I-84/CT-8

If you are looking for more of a sit down as opposed to a fast serve type of restaurant I would suggest:

La Tavola Waterbury CT
www.latavolaristorante.com

Black Rock Thomaston CT
www.blackrocktavern.com

If you are looking for a fast serve place I would vote for a roast beef sandwich from Sheiks Sandwich Shop in Torrington or Dominican food from La Cazuela in Waterbury.

Naugatuck?

I was passing through Naugy last week so I stopped at Fiesta. It wasn't open and I couldn't tell from the outside if they are closed for good or not. I will say that the prices listed on the menu seemed too high for me.

All the Peruvian places in Waterbury have closed, seems like I'll be sticking to Ceviche Palace in BPT for the time being.

Diablos Cantina? Norwalk Mexican????

A Mexican friend of mine told me that this is the spot. He said they offer birria and pozole on the weekend and that it's really good. It is on my list of places to try.

Guatemalan grocery store?

I don't know if they have that chocolate, but I can point you in the direction of a couple Guatemalan markets.

There is a new one in Brooklyn on New Utrecht btw 71/69th street. They also serve food in the back. Not too far away from there is a smaller one on Bath Avenue between 18th/20th avenue.

In Queens there is a small one in Far Rockaway across the street from Kosher World Supermarket by Beach 19th street. They also have a steam table and serve food.

Good luck.

Northern Galapagos...Torrington, CT

Nice review.

A friend of mine has been praising them for a couple of years now. I think I'm going to have to find an excuse to get up there.

I'll pass on the Cuy but if they offer ceviche that is another story. There was a Peruvian market in Stamford selling cuy for a while. They actually had pictures of them in their ads in the local Spanish newspaper.

Authentico Mexican Comida in Danbury

I haven't been that way in a while, but there was a little Mexican spot on Main Street in Brewster right by the train station. Note: NOT the place directly in front of the train station...the Mex place is about a block or two down the street. Also a decent Central American place about 5 minute drive in the other direction. Of course in this economy none of these places might still be open.

If you live on the other side of Danbury you could explore New Milford. I noticed one or two places advertising "Latino food" close to the train station downtown. Might get lucky and find something good.

Danbury itself has lots of Latino places(Brazilian, Guatemalan, Ecuadoran,Dominican) but Mexican doesn't seem to be jumping out at me right now.

Nice find. Especially if they have al pastor tacos.

There is a similar pizza place on Main Street in Bridgeport serving tacos and tortas on the side.
