Kosher cookbook recipe club!

I think here is where the voting comes in:

Please vote between chefs confidential and spice and spirit

Personally I have both those books anyway and haven't made much from either so would be interested in both.

Kosher cookbook recipe club!

I propose that those who are interested in specifically kosher cookbooks (cause there is a thread on the main board for regular cookbooks) join in a monthly cookbook club- each month we choose a cookbook, pick 4-5 recipes from said cookbook (and report on this thread so we do not end up all making the same thing) and report back after each recipe with a report on said recipe... Who wants to join? Any suggestions of the first book?

Sammys in Teaneck

Well sammys, to be fair, is meant to be a Pizza store. But by the same logic, they have mocha bleu a block away, lazy bean a block away and ej's across the road. I don't get who they are trying to appeal to?

Best parve sliced "cheese?"

Sammys in Teaneck

Walked in their tonight and discovered their new menu- I am not joking but they have moved their fries prices up to $6 for ONE portion of fries. $12 for a personal pie. I walked right out- for that money I can go to Mocha Bleu and have more food and a waiter experience.. What are they thinking?!?!?!

Looking for advice for guest with crohns

I have a friend coming for Shabbat who has Crohns so she basically doesn't eat flour or sugar. I also have someone coming for lunch who has nut allergies.. I am planning to make a dairy buffet- lasagne, quiches, a variety of salads, borekas and maybe falafel and pita. I will do a crustless quiche and buy the raw gluten free falafel mix.. any other ideas of what i can make for my guests? I will do a big fruit platter and some cakes/ cookies for dessert.

Kosher vegetarian Italian sausage and other deli items

Gardein- the Chicken tenders, schzechuan beef and beef tips are only ones worth buying IMHO.

Burgers- Non-freezer burnt Tival burgers cannot be beat.
Morningstar Grillers are also very good.

Buffalo nuggets- Morningstar- divine.

Chickenless nuggets- 365 brand from whole foods- absolutely delicious.

Dynasea is made with fish and I dont eat fish- i did buy a brand of vegan scallops from a company called Sophies Kitchen which is vegan. They have a whole range.

Sorry I was unclear. I meant the cookie butter inside these cookies tasted very similar to the Biscoff spread. The actual cookies were just crunchy (regular) butter cookies.

Tj recommendation and random observation/ question

I have had Biscoff spread in Israel so many times. It is like a million calories for a teaspoon and it is worth every one of those kcals ;)
These cookies tasted very similar to the israel spread. I guess my question is why they don't use the same cookie butter to make speculoos kosher. I might email them and ask.

Same thing with the triple ginger cookies- choc covered triple ginger cookies and cowgirl bark are kosher but the triple ginger cookies themselves are not. I don't get it...

Trader Joes make cookies called "cookie butter sandwich cookies". Chaf-k d and amazingly delicious.
On a separate note, why do things like these cookies have hashgacha yet the root product (in this case the cookie butter) does not? Cowgirl bark has hashgacha yet triple ginger cookies do not etc etc... It is bizarre.

Now that foie gras is legal again in California

Be that as it may, I personally find it hard to reconcile with a religion that places much of the rules of schechita on ensuring animals never feel pain, yet have no problem with them being raised in pain when they are alive.
Not to mention, at time when Shulchan Aruch was written I doubt factory farming on the current level was ever envisioned.

Now that foie gras is legal again in California

I am a vegetarian, and I will probably be totally blasted here for this, but aside from inhumane practices of factory farming (and i have zero clue how any kashrut agency certify animals raised in such conditions cause it goes so much against the halachot of Tzur ba'alei chayim) i really cannot imagine how any kashrut agency would ever allow certification of foie gras. I am shocked they allow veal as well, but thats a separate issue.

Veggie Bistro Teaneck

Look, the food is actually decent, when they have it in stock and on the menu. I think it is a huge shame that they were never able to properly execute their original menu because it had potential. I think that the owner is a really sweet guy and tries very hard but that he really needs to try and find more staff, create a workable unique menu and stick to it if he wants it to work there. That includes updating the menu on his website ;)

Veggie Bistro Teaneck

The food, when we first went there, was really good (we went close to opening night). I was excited to see real vegan protein options on offer - even if it was Gardein or something similar- and when I found out they were out of all their proteins, I was really disappointed.
We ordered a quiche, some cauliflower (it was literally divine), soup a salad some other stuff... Anyway, we went back about a month later. Nothing was the same (even down to the croutons that I had really enjoyed the first time we went), the cauliflower had been removed from the menu, the menu was much smaller and there was no vegan food on offer at all. In fact, as someone above me said,t here was very little differentiating Veggie Bistro from every other restaurant out there. I didn't want or need more paninis, I wanted good selections of vegan food. The quiche is a nice touch, but the rest of it? I can basically find anywhere else in that vicinity.
