Good Indian in the East Village?

Brick Lane or Banjara

College Eats in the Financial District

Walk down Fulton to L&L Hawaiian BBW or Reuben's Empanadas. Maiden Lane has great food if you walk down all the way to Broadway (most notably Alfanoose). And when you get the late night munchies, Best of New York Food is the obvious choice as it is the only 24 hour deli in the area.

Recs for Blue Smoke?

The absolute musts are the mac and cheese and the fry bread. I can't even walk within 3 blocks of Blue Smoke without ordering those. You're gonna need more than one of each. Deviled eggs also make a great appetizer.

As for the entrees, everything is slightly-above-average. Order whatever you generally like. A rib sampler or pulled pork sandwich is always a safe bet, but the daily specials are usually better.

Any $1.00 food in your neighborhood ???

Yeah, his excellent chicken drumsticks are also $1 each

Is BBQ in NYC hopeless? How is BLUE SMOKE?

Personally, I love Blue Smoke. The sides are fantastic, most notably the mac and cheese and fry bread. However, looking at ribs alone, there is no question the best BBQ in the city is Dinosaur in Harlem.

what to serve with hot wings and beer?

mashed potatoes with a little bleu cheese mixed in

Looking for best pizza [moved from Manhattan]

I have yet to try DiFara's, unfortunetely. But I will tell you that I like John's on Bleecker better than Grimaldi's, Lombardi's or any slice place.

Good Indian Cookbooks?

Anything by Kurma Dada

I'm thinking about ordering a Lou Malnati's Pizza [Moved from Chains board]

haha, if you live in Chicago, they are worth it. I have never tried having them shipped cross-country, but thank you, that is a great story.

A memorable food from another land...

Blood sausage in Paris. It was good. Kinda crunchy

Where to? Astor Place Lunch Hour

Chickpea
6th St for Indian
Klong
99 Miles to Philly
Pizza Mercato

Spinach Enriched Pasta

What do you all think? I like the stuff, and it is becoming inceasingly available in supermarkets. At least tri colore is always available. I have no idea if this stuff is actually healthier or not, but I like the flavor.

what to do with a quart of buttermilk?

Homemade cottage cheese! Stick the whole carton, unopened, in a deep pot. Fill with water so the carton is submerged, and bring it to a boil. Boil gently for 30 minutes, then remove the pot from the heat, put a lid on it and stick it somewhere for 12-18 hours. Then all you have to do is take the carton out, open it and pour the contents into a colander. Make sure to let it drain for a couple of minutes.

Good Indian food on the LES or in the East Village.

No need to "switch," both are great. Banjara is slightly cheaper, but I have always liked the food at Bick Lane slightly better. Although, Brick Lane does not have those delicious pot pie things. Anyway, Indian food on the LES shouldn't be a problem...6th street is also known as curry hill. Try Panna II for the cheapest good Indian you can get.

rec sought - fast food but good in Financial District or Tribeca, at night

Sophie's for Cuban sandwhiches. I think the one at Maiden Lane and Broadway is closest to where you will be.

Lunch at DB Bistro

No...try the pommes soufflees. I promise the thought of McDonalds french fries will never ever cross your mind. Unfortunetely, if you didn't like the burger, I don't think any other lunches have a choice of them.

Devi - any good

If you don't mind the price, yes, Devi is about as good Indian food as you can get in Manhattan

Interesting Indian south of 23rd?

Brick Lane Curry House is fantastic. Spicy goan, sweet and velvety korma and a delicious potato dish cooked "bombay" style.

Camping

english muffin pizzas are my go-to camping food. Obviously, hot dogs, burgers and chicken are easy as well

If you could only...

I am tempted by Vietnamese and Indian, but would most likely have to go with Italian

East Village bests

The two "musts" are the east village cheese shop and pomme frites. For other diversions, you are pretty close to the Trader Joe's wine shop. Veselka is a great meal, as is Klong and any of the indian places on 6th street. The entire area is saturated with cool bars, so getting a drink shouldn't be a problem.
