Miami Danny's Profile
Limited Time Only (LTO) -- RJ Cooper Dinners
I live in NY. And I wasn't suggesting that we need more pork products on menus here. I was recounting experiences of great food prepared by this chef. His LTONYC menu definitely does not focus on pig products. Neither do the fantastic cocktails, of which I tried several, possibly all, last night.
Limited Time Only (LTO) -- RJ Cooper Dinners
Glad to see the opening night jitters evaporated quickly. I was a big fan of 'Pig & Pinot Fridays' at Vidalia when I lived in DC. Bacon chocolate chip cookies with sweet onion- bacon ice cream, pig tail croquettes, shaved pig reuben, shoat head-like to see more pig courses at LTO, please!
Best Organic Produce - Farmers Market in Miami area
The Roots in the City/Wholesome Wave Farmers Market has reopened at NW 2nd Ave and 10th St. Chef Michael Schwartz is the major local supporter. Food stamps get double value and there are local vendors like Troy Gardens, (from the Troy Academy who work with at-risk youth), as well as more traditional farmers like Teena's Pride and Bee Heaven Farms.

Any decent food at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival?
Second the bhelpuri and mango lassi. They also have kingfisher beer.

Frod'o---for the chocolate cake you are talking about you need to go to Take One Lounge, around the corner on NE 79th St.
Burger and Beer Joint Review
Frodo-You are correct-I meant to say that the USDA INSPECTS all beef consumed in this country.
American Kobe is a cattlemen's trademark and Wagyu is another variable term-how much of the wagyu breed must there be for the meat to be called wagyu? Essentially, you are at the mercy of the supplier/restaurant. Caveat emptor 'sall I was saying. When I used to buy my wagyu patties and steaks from Norman Bros. I put my trust in them. At a restaurant? I'd have to see the invoice to believe it

Actually I believe the Boulevard is much safer than a year ago, and the motel itself is certainly less seedy (although some seeds do remain). The 'Boulevard' club is back to being a strip club for the moment, with lovely half-naked hostesses sitting outside to the delight of passing motorists. But they don't appear to be too busy. The gas station across the street, ground zero for skells, is under construction and will have better lighting-perfect for when you need to buy a pack of cigarettes but don't want to get shivved. With Anise going strong, there is more of a police patrol presence on these blocks as well. Agree there should be fewer hookers. Does a lap dance count as a concept?
Also, try the chocolate cake.
Red Light, Yellow Light
LOL No it's quite a different scene now, although still colorful. They have valet parking or you can just park across Biscayne at the Auto Parts place. There are families and couples-the other night I saw at least one state's attorney and a prominent food critic. Two words-spiny lobster!
Burger and Beer Joint Review
Yea! If that's what you've been getting anyway, just paying more for it!
Red Light, Yellow Light
Just to update-All the problems I spoke about last year have been remedied for quite some time now, and Red Light has transformed into a great neighborhood restaurant/hangout with mad genius chef Kris Wessel. Just wanted to update the record. Two words-Spiny Lobster!

Frod-Does each flat screen count as a different concept?
Burger and Beer Joint Review
As I said-kobe or wagyu make excellent burgers if served extremely rare-I have had both. Obviously they are not using Japanese Kobe, and I'm sure they don't claim to be.
Additionally, the USDA grades all beef that is consumed in this country. And true Japanese Kobe is graded by the Japanese, as well. Kobe can be ground by hand and if done properly, it makes a perfectly amazing burger.
I like to sit down to a good burger too, but if the menu says something (free-range chicken, organic Brussels sprouts, or whatever) it better be on the plate.
Burger and Beer Joint Review
BM-Ground Kobe makes a great burger, actually. As does American Kobe or Wagyu-extremely rare. However, I agree it is unlikely there is any Kobe beef on the premises. By the way, are they grinding their own beef? And with all the hoopla surrounding burgers, what is the makeup of their burgers? 80/20? What cuts? What USDA Grade? I'm just curious, is all. In NYC, burger joints tout their cuts, percentage of fat, and even supplier. Maybe it's overkill, but I'm just curious.

AG-Agree that things have gotten out of hand which is why I eschew obvious tourist traps run by people who are expert at running tourist traps. So, it is not mandatory for people who like good food to succumb to the hype, is all I was saying, perhaps inelegantly.. I would like to hear more about your Michy's fried chicken. Maybe a new thread? I also think it is weird to call this place overpriced, etc., and then promote the burger beast's post. So maybe you did like it a little bit/are part of the hype?
Anise-Mediterranean From The Ouzo's Folks...
There is not a lot of competition from 'Greek' restaurants, but that's what makes it so interesting. I can think of at least a dozen diners in South Fla. that have it on the menu, some as "specials". Greek diners. There's still tons. And I love Stoupsy's. Best Greek food downtown.
Anise-Mediterranean From The Ouzo's Folks...
Anise now has what I consider the best mousaka in Miami. Very creamy, cheesy topping over thinly sliced layers of eggplant, etc. Waterfront dining, just downriver from Red Light.

731 NE 79th St, a block or two east of Biscayne Blvd. Classic neighborhood joint (actual name is Flora's East Side) with picnic tables, cops, etc. Open til 1AM, til 3AM Fri and Sat. They have actually lowered prices recently, and also offer a daily pasta special for $4.99 that includes salad and garlic rolls and a soda. And they are all pretty good, too. Excellent meatballs.

I agree AG it is out of hand. However, no one is forcing anyone to eat at upscale places just because bloggers (myself included, perhaps) are drooling over them. My favorite burger is at Eastside Pizza-the cheeseburger and fries is $6 and it is one of the best around. Their pizza is also perfectly fine and a giant slice is just $2.50. If you are paying more for atmosphere, that is one's prerogative, I guess. Although you really can't beat Eastside for that, either.
A 10-pound burger just sounds gross and pointless to me, by the way.

Chez Rosie-pretty much everything's under $10 and they also do an under $5 lunch. I had stewed chicken with a big pile of okra (which are in season now) and a ton of rice and beans, like $7. Photos here http://dailycocaine.blogspot.com/2009/08/okra-season-at-chez-rosie.html
