Lobster shack around Fairhaven/New Bedford?

Oxford Creamery lobster roll is very good. Try the Grape Nuts ice cream for dessert.

Meatballs - Hors d'Oeuvres - "Juicy"

I find that ground beef dishes (meatballs, meatloaf, whatever) always benefits from a little pinch of powdered gelatin mixed in. Maybe I stole this from America's Test Kitchen???

Dinner with friends - should they show up empty handed?

We have a couple of friends, who had to move abruptly and unhappily from a big lovely house to a two bedroom apartment. And during the necessary reduction, packing and moving we pitched in, helped, and fed them regularly. And eventually they were happily reestablished.

And now we are having the kitchen renovated, and don't have a place to cook anymore. So they are having us over every week.

We're friends, ya know. Nothing else really matters.

One pot meals for the summer

Tomorrow morning, they are coming to rip out my kitchen. I am excited about the remodel, but...

I have a downstairs half bath/work room that I will be using as a kitchen for the duration. I have a coffee maker, a two burner hot plate, a toaster, a microwave, and a dorm-sized fridge set up. And a grill outside.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions for one pot/no oven/sheltering in place and yet summery meals.

Thank you!

Where did the prawns come from?

"We should be glad Britain (unlike the United States) still has real newspapers doing real investigative journalism."

And Antislavery International. They've been at this since the 1830's.

my friends have no social sense at all

And I wouldn't mind at all ... I have celiac friends who are VERY sensitive, and it can be brutal. I would be heartsick if I accidentally poisoned someone.

my friends have no social sense at all

I have solved the mystery! (Maybe.) Turkey guy not only brought his turkey, he brought his new lady friend, whom most of us were meeting for the first time. And she's gluten allergic. So I think he was trying to make sure she had enough to eat.

Thanks. Your basic meatballs, browned and then baked in a sauce of (forgive me) jarred salsa and a can of chipotles in adobo. Scatter on some cilantro leaves for pretty.

I like you guys. Thanks to you all for the perspective.

Mostly I just needed to vent, with a side order of "am I nuts, here?".

Turkey guy fancies himself a flashy cook, and also birthday girl and husband themselves are the sort who would show up at a potluck with a bag of chips and a dozen Dunkin Donuts, so he may be practicing self-defensive food socializing here.

It still seems like a lot of poultry, so I think I'm switching over to spicy sort-of-Mexican meatballs. At least, the guy who always brings the best wine is coming, so I won't end the evening unhappy.

my friends have no social sense at all

A friend's birthday is coming up, and because of physical limitations (can't do stairs, can't walk any significant distance, can't stand very long) I volunteered my house for the party, so she could park by the back door, and only have two steps to manage.

I suggested a potluck, with me providing the space, the linens and plates and flatware, and a big pan of roasted chicken, as an entree. I'll pick up a cake from the local bakery. Her husband sent out an invitation asking for sides and salads and wine and soda, and specifically said entree only if you don't like chicken.

So I just got an email from one of the guests announcing he'll be bringing "a freshly roasted 12 pound turkey with potatoes."

I don't know whether it was the "freshly roasted" or the "turkey" that cheesed me off more, but all I can think is that's gonna be a hell of a lot of poultry.

Frozen Cherries

None of the stores around here (Roxborough) seem to have frozen cherries. Strawberries, sure. Blueberries, mixed berries. Heck, even mango. But no cherries. Any ideas where I can try further afield? I need them to make brandied cherries for Manhattans.

returning food to supermarket?

I'm confused: you normally get a piece of waxed paper between every single slice of cheese and the next?

Uses for "spicy vegetable juice" aka spicy v8

Any place a recipe calls for "vegetable broth" (which I think always tends to taste like dish water) replace it with V-8.

Thanksgiving Etiquette

You were right, and SIL (and goofball husband, who knew exactly what was going on) were wrong. That said: Thanksgiving is for lots of complicated reasons probably the most widely observed, intense, emotionally fraught, memory laden holiday we celebrate in the United States. We have a friend who will tell you that it's not "really" Thanksgiving unless she has everything on a list of about two dozen things, including three kinds of cranberries, and three different pies. And the squash pie has to be square.

My husband's list isn't that long, but he has his list, too. So those are the things I offer to bring. And if the host/ess turns me down, so be it. What your folks should have done was keep their mouths shut, and have their own itty bitty turkey feast on Friday, with the things they particularly love.

But they didn't, and now they're gone, and you can forget about them for a whole year.

What would *you* want from the food pantry?

Making things a little happier, especially for kids: Samuel Johnson had it right: What signifies, says some one, giving halfpence to beggars? they only lay it out in gin or tobacco. "And why should they be denied such sweeteners of their existence (says Johnson)?

You and your son are really good people.

Are You Snacking on Anything Right Now? *Happy Holidays Edition*

Today was the cookie exchange at the office I worked in for 36 years before retiring. I was at the Christmas luncheon last week ... they include the retired folks ... and dealt myself into the exchange. So I am really cookied up, and one batch was Earl Grey shortbreads: a recipe I introduced to them 5 years ago. Happy, Merry!

Tiki drinks party - some questions

May I hop in and ask if anyone has a recipe for a Southern Cross? I think it was originally in a Trader Vic's cookbook, back in the day?

Your household & food term neologisms?

Tuna goo: I do most of the cooking, but DH has a couple of dishes he can throw into the mix when I just can't face making dinner. Tuna goo is my favorite. No peas, no potato chips, just lots of seafood, shrimp, clams etc.

Small wedding--looking for private room or restaurant to rent

I once accidentally attended a wedding in the bar at XIX ... it's a lovely spot with a fireplace to gather in front of.

Yet another tipping question

Me again.

A fascinating discussion so far.

Yes, I am in the United States, and yes, I am talking about specifically the employees who manage the free breakfast service in a hotel, not servers in a hotel restaurant, and not the housekeeping staff who clean my room. (My great aunt Anna Centennial worked for 60 years as a hotel chambermaid, while raising her brother's children after their mother died in the flu epidemic of 1919 [yes, I am as old as dirt] and I ALWAYS tip the housekeepers.)

Yet another tipping question

I spent last night in one of those clean, respectable chain hotels that offers decent value and a complimentary breakfast. No one will ever mistake it for gourmet cuisine (oh, the sack for scrambled "eggs" going round in the microwave) but there's actual food in a pleasant surround.

There was a pleasant, hard-working young lady, bustling about, microwaving those eggs, topping up the coffee carafes, foraging for hot sauce, arranging apples and bananas in a bowl, wiping down the tables between guests. And it occurred to me that while I always leave money for the person who cleans my room, I don't tip the breakfast room lady. Nor have I ever seen anything, like a tip jar, that suggests other people do. Yet she's working hard to make my morning much more bearable.

So. Any thoughts? Does anyone tip in this circumstance? How?

Food Pranks

Penn and Teller --- the parsley game! The goal is to take all the decorative parsley and dump it onto someone else's plate, without getting caught. When we took the family out to dinner after our son's high school graduation, he bribed the waitress to put extra parsley on everyone's dessert. Really confused my aunt and cousins.
