The Japanese BBQ Specialist - Sansui-Tei (Yakiniku) [Review] w/ Pics!

EXCELLENT! Just saw my RSS feed pop up with the new review =D

And as many have mentioned, seem to be a hit-and-miss, doesn't matter you got there at 5:30 or even earlier... they could be totally sold out on the Kobe =(

Cant wait. I might be hitting Tsuruhashi up since I'm heading down for Homecoming this weekend!

Good sushi - orange county?

Unfortunately, I haven't found any in OC. All the good omakase, or just simply sit at the sushi bar in OC are at a high premium price =(

So for me, I've migrated to LA. I'll just go to Chino Hill's Rokuan from time to time, since I live in Walnut but work in Irvine =P

BBQ - Where to find the best in LA?

801 E. Manchester Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90301 is closed. lucky I posted here or else I would have driven over there already, since it's listed on their website.

937 Redondo Ave. would be the Long Beach location.

But where's the San Pedro location?

Suggestion for OC's lunch spots?

Hey EK, thx! I honestly dunno why the hype about Maki Zushi, maybe cause I just haven't gotten to know the itame or book a omakase seat at the sushi bar yet... hmmm. I'll try Shibucho instead!!! My only concern for a late nite dinner at Tsuruhashi... is that all the Kobe beef will be gone by then ='( ...

Off topic... you know... I was pretty bumped out by work last night, so I decided to treat myself something nice for dinner. I just happened to be reading your review on Google reader about Kohryu, so I went and tried the Shio soup base on the Champon, instead of my usual miso pick... I was so disappointed. Then tonight trying make it up from the bad taste left in my mouth, I went to Santouka to get a #7 (Tokusen Toroniku Ramen), but it still didn't leave me anything good on the way driving back home... arrrgh still so unsatisfied!!!

When will OC to have something quality like Asa in Gardena? Why the two Santouka (Torrence vs. Costa Mesa), both inside of a Mitsuwa can taste quite differently >_<

*ok... off topic rant done*...

Suggestion for OC's lunch spots?

You got my dilemma completely!!! I think both Tsuruhashi and SSG Yakitori isn't opened for lunch, so we will try to hit it -AFTER- the homecoming game. And I recently read elmomonster's recent review, that's why Bluefin is on my radar.

Good call on Sushi Shibucho, I completely forgot about that. I always meant to try them!

Suggestion for OC's lunch spots?

Fellow hounder, I could use some help :-)

I'm planning a bro-out-night on the UCI Homecoming day. I'm trying to nail down couple suggestions for decent Japanese food as our lunch. Our choices are wide open, from Ramen such as Gomen, to Yakiniku such as Tsuruhashi, to fusion-ish/sushi/omakase like Ikko and Bluefin.

With all your much-better-trainned palette, what other suggestions do you have in mind?

A Culinary Tour of the Ramen Shops of Torrance: Shisen Ramen, Shin Mama Ramen, CHABUYA, Men-bei, Santouka [Review] w/ Pics!

Absolutely, I luvvvvvvvvvvvv FFT's Shio ramen. One of my short-list of top-5 favorite.

Shin Mama... it's so far... :-p Living in Walnut doesn't lead me up that far west. I probably will try them, when I take my parents back to the airport heading home =)

I -luv- all you hounders! Always with the excellent suggetions, for lazy people like me just benefit from =P

Not a problem EK ;-) In one night i can't chow down 2 bowls of ramen anyway... especially because I didn't have lunch until almost 3pm and I exit on 405 got up to Gardena area around 8pm-ish.

I love Asa... I would say if it's not the best, maybe my 2nd best so far. I'm more of a tonkotsu shio guy, I don't enjoy any variety of shoyu style. But that 3 slices of fatty yummy chashu, and the soup... shocked my taste buds for sure. I was savoring the taste in my mouth... the whole hour while I Was circling at LAX waiting for my parent's flight arrival :-)

I completely agree with you EK!

The OC's Daikokuya is absolutely a disgrace! Kairaku Tei just taste too salty. I always need another bottle of drink on my way driving home, so thirsty! In OC I've yet to find a ramen-ya that have good ramen noodle like Shinsengumi, so I usually only go there for the noodle only (cause their chashu sux).

Ebisu to me is sorta like a cafe kind of store, they have everything.
If I drive to Brookhurst already, I usually will stick with Shinsengumi. As many probably will agree, Santouka will be a hit-and-miss since it's in the food court and it's a chain-store etc etc.

That leave me my current favorite Kohryu. Dunno why, I just dig their miso champion a lot.

I hope Keizo's suggestion of Gomen will be my new favorite =D

Good tips! thx for the heads up Keizo!!! Tonkotsu shio!!!! OMGOSH I'm drooling... other than the hit-and-misses at Santouka, I don't think anywhere in OC offer a bowl that's worthwhile for me to waste my tummy space on. I shall try Gomen!!! ASAP!!! =P

Sushi Wasabi vs Shibucho vs Kasen - which one?

anyone been to the oki doki Garden Grove location? as LA Times said, that particular one is more izakaya style. I'm really curious...

From the tustin location and costa mesa location, the review wasn't so tempting to me... but... a Izakaya style/theme one? now that trigger my desire to give it a try =P

EK, I saw in the section when you talking about Shisen Ramen, there was a mention of "as bad as Gardena Ramen"... so I assume Gardena Ramen is to be avoid? I think I'll pay Asa a visit tonight, because I have to pick my parents up from LAX :-9

gosh... I only tried Kohryu / Kairakutei / Santouka / Daikokuya / Ebisu Shinsengumi. Since I haven't heard of anything 'good' from Mentatsu... never really bother since Kohryu so close by it.

Maruyu and Gomen... 2 new joints to try for me =D

no wonder rameniac... it's hard to find food joint that opens AFTER 10pm... I'm always on constant lookout for those too! and hence that's why I'm more of a izakaya frequent visitor...

As a geek, I only know the three amigo nickname for the UML creator: Booch, Jacobson, and Rumbaugh.

I think I can coin the term as least in SoCal, the ramen three amigo = rameniac, keizo + EK! :-p

Yakitori in OC?

what sort of operating hour do these big 3 offer, weekday vs weekend? I assume Sun-Thur is shorter while Fri-Sat is a few hours extended?

This is what I gathered so far...
SSG, Mon-Sun 6-11:30pm
Kappo Honda Mon-Sun 5:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m
Honda Ya Mon-Sun 5:30 p.m.-1:00 a.m.

Yakitori in OC?

what would be your recommendation for izakaya in OC? the only one that's on my radar is Ikko... that I haven't had a chance to try out.

So sad... only 3 in OC. Honda Ya is just sad... I was there this past Sat... disappointed. Especially because I was at SSG on Friday night.

I wonder if I'll have better luck with Kappo Honda, kinda a median that with fair food and won't bleed my wallet... :-p
