Shooley's Profile
Michele Ragussis - New Chef at The Pearl (Rockland, ME)
I met her at the Rockland farmers market last week...she seems very nice--a cool cat.
Destination Restaurant in northern New Hampshire?
The Sugar Hill Inn, in Sugar Hill, just outside of Franconia. Very nice inn and excellent prix fixe dinners.
Great Lobster Roll--Unlikely Spot!
Ah, that explains it. Can't say I watch much Fox News!
Great Lobster Roll--Unlikely Spot!
Has anyone else tried the $9.95 lobster roll at the gas station on Route 1 in Thomaston...on the main drag in the center...it's the station with the signs that post a revolving selection of vocabulary words, of all things. Full of lobster, not overly mayo'd and they'll toast your classic New England-style bun!
Mid Coast Maine Musings - May 2012
Thank you, MMM. Since I'm on a diet, I can't eat hardly nothin', so I appreciate eating vicariously by lurking on foodie posts...until we eat again--Shooley
Visiting Portsmouth, NH
This board is rife with people with opinions about what they consider to be "authentic" when it comes to some sort of Thai sticky rice or whatever they had on their last trip to Singapore or the texture of the injera they had in Ethiopa. It's still their idea of authentic. I still say, if the food is tasty (well seasoned, well prepared) and not pretending to be otherwise, then that's to be celebrated. Not to mention the price was reasonable. I was just pleased to find a lunch place in Portsmouth offering ethnically flavored food that was damn good.
Bangor Maine restaurant experience
I'm with mjc and mcm--this is a tough economy and Main Street is full of closed restaurant doors. For restaurant owners to be presenting with that attitude, however "matter of fact," doesn't bode well for this restaurant.
Two couple traveling 1st week of April - want Lobster
Wow, I guess they've lowered their off-season rates considerably; I stand corrected!
Two couple traveling 1st week of April - want Lobster
I, too, love both the B&B's you mention here in Rockland, but the poster is on a budget and both of those places, particularly the Berry Manor, are pricey, even in winter. I might suggest the Granite Inn, which is much cheaper and very well situated, too.
Visiting Portsmouth, NH
I was there with my family last week and we had a great meal: we tried the empanadas, the Thai meat bowl with sticky rice (or something like that!), the big porchetta sandwich, and the noodle bowl; we even had the hotdog (my grandson). It was all delicious, flavorful, very well prepared and welll priced. Who cares if it's "authentic"...we live in New England for gawd's sake!
Mid Coast Maine Musings - March 2012
But, look at Chase's Daily--they're only open one night for dinner and offer only vegetarian and not a really huge menu...I don't get it.
Mid Coast Maine Musings - March 2012
Re. Chase's Daily in my post of a few minutes ago: I meant to reference the fact that they've gotten the nod twice!
Mid Coast Maine Musings - March 2012
A few thoughts on your thoughts...Other than the usual soups, etc., I have not really checked out the Rock City food, but I should. On the other hand, I have been a huge fan of their baked goods for years, but I've noticed lately I don't like them so much. They used to have the best scones in the world next to Kohnie's coffee in Phoenix, Az (but they're gone and I no longer live there so there). Mayber there's a new baker there?
Happy to hear that Bean's so-called perfect lobster stand is not likely to return--a favor to the community if you ask me. In addition to the upscale burger joint/sandwich bar that's in production next to Rustica, I understand that the owner of Black Parrot is putting in a tapas/pub-style/something or other restaurant where Rock City used to be. Supposedly it will have good beers on tap and a decent wine list.
We've been availing ourselves of the Maine restaurant week offerings. I, too, love Shepherd's PIe, but wish he wouldn't use so much sickly sweet sauce on his food. That sweet chili Asian soy thing is cloying.
I, too, am very pleased with the midcoast showings in the Beard nominations. However, one person who gets left out consistently, in my opinion, is Melody Wolfertz at In Good Company, particularly if you consider the fact that Chase's Daily hasn't gotten the nod twice. She has been putting out some amazing food from that tiny kitchen for years.

MCM--unfortunately, I've heard that the new chef at the Edge has not done well for place, which is sad--we loved it when Brian Dame was the chef.

I would second New Hampshire's Sugar Hill Inn--been there twice and loved it both times. Agree on Primo in Rockland, Maine, too, and I would add a new restaurant to the midcoast Maine list: The Lost Kitchen, which started out as a private supper club and is now a restaurant in downtown Belfast. And, I would add In Good Company to the downtown Rockland list, too. Getting back to Vermont, I've had a lovely meal at Downtown Grocery in Ludlow and I also love Pane e Salute in Woodstock. At the latter, the owners are growing grapes to make their own wine, and Deirdre Heekin, the wife of the duo, has been making all sorts of Eau de Vies, etc. (See her book "Libation: A Bitter Alchemy"); Pane e Salute has a wonderful simple/elegant/rustic approach to Italian cuisine, and a terrific all-Italian wine list.
New England dining in 2012
Is Bresca now open for lunch??? We were in Portland just after Xmas en route to Manchester airport and looking for lunch. We ended up at the Corner Grille which, although having the right "look" for what they're trying to do, had rather mediocre food...pizza crust tasted like dry crackers! Yuk.
so much food, so little time- your thoughts
Hi, Alyssa
Just jumping in on this thread...I will be in the Loire in a couple of weeks, and would love to know where you've decided to stay/eat....thanks for any recommendations!
Last night in Paris alone: which restaurant?
It will be a Thursday night...sorry not to have mentioned that!
Last night in Paris alone: which restaurant?
I'll be leaving France at the end of October and will be in Paris for the last night, alas, solo. But, I still need to eat: where should I go? The last time my husband and i were in the city, last year, we dined at La Regalade and L'Ami Jean and loved both. I've been there and done the foam thing, which is fine, but I'm not so into pyrotechnics and impressive displays when I eat, I just like to dine well. What say you, chowhounders? (Price not so important: I mean, what's one night? Oh, and i don't want to have to get all fancied up by myself either.) I was thinking about: L'Ebauchoir, Le Chateaubriand, Le Bistral, Les Fines Gueules, Cafe de la Nouvelle Marie.... (Good wine list important: I am in the wine business!)
Aidez-moi!
Road trip to Canada - need lunch break recos!
But, if they're traveling from QC to Bar Harbor, they'll go nowhere near Vermont. More likely traveling through Jackman, Maine, etc., no??
Rockland lunch/dinner/lobstersuggestions?
Yes, you are...that's what I was referring to in my post....
Rockland lunch/dinner/lobstersuggestions?
Sadly, they are no longer running their operation at Sharpy's. But last year Jess's fish market on Rte. 73 had good lobster rolls for around $10...not sure if they're doing them this year, though.
Maine (Portland, Wiscasset, Camden, Bar Harbor) Advice Sought
Hey, I'm from Mass. though I now live in Rockland...look out!
I love Sarah's!
I'm a big fan too...I've been touting their lobster rolls for years: homemade roll, lots of lobster, very tasty. My husband and I also love some of the pastries they do on the weekends only: like this absolutely sinful Danish pastry that's a cross between a cinnamon roll and cheesecake. When we drive by en route, we have to look away, steering clear of its siren call.
