Sunday night dinner in Chapel Hill
I'd second Kitchen in Chapel Hill. Good food and service, interesting small plates. Great atmosphere. We always find lots of things we'd like to order. Plus plenty of parking. Lots of special in addition to regular menu. You can check it out here: http://kitchenchapelhill.com/kitchen/?page_id=8
Our current favorite restaurant is L'uva in Durham but unfortunately they close on Sunday.
One week near RDU - where to eat?
Best pizza in town is Bella Mia - coal fired, crispy thin crust, homemade cheese. It was named Restaurant of the Year last year shortly after they opened and it's still excellent. Good local beers on tap. Meatballs and roasted vegetables make nice starters. You're lucky you'll be so close. We have to drive a long way to get there and we happily do although when we walk in, we're ready to eat and service is sometimes a little slow.
We're leaving for Phoenix in 2 weeks. If you'd like to name a couple of those good Mexican restaurants, we'll give them a try. I'll check back soon..
Emile Henry pie pan --will I be sorry?
No, you will never be sorry. You will be delighted as long as you follow some of Emile Henry's suggestions for using the pan. They say to preheat the pastry 5 minutes before filling and bake 10 minutes longer than recipe that uses a pyrex or tin pan. Pies come out beautiful and do not stick. In fact, I find it easier to get pie out of Emile Henry plate than anything else I've used. And cutting with a sharp knife doesn't make lines or dents in the pan. It's wonderful.
L'Uva in Durham Now Open
We were there again the other day and again, it was wonderful. Starting with the bread which supposedly comes from New Jersey and is the best bread I know. Olive oil and pesto is great for dipping. We ordered linguine bolognaise with a salad and another delicious salmon dish, the menu said it was poached in olive oil but it wasn't oily just moist and almost creamy in texture served with salad. I saw Jim Anile there and was told the regular chef is back in Italy right now so Jim is in the kitchen for both lunch and dinner. If you're looking to give L'uva a second chance, Durhamois, this is a good time.
Triangle New Restaurant of the Year
My suggestion for you is L'uva at American Tobacco in Durham. Every dish we've had there has been excellent. Fish is extraordinary. Menu changes weekly. Service is first class. Place is quite small but high style and has lots of good energy. Everyone there seems to be enjoying themselves. Greg Cox gave it good review just a week or two ago.
Southern Season's New Ownership (Chapel Hill)
I often shop at A Southern Season for things I have a hard time finding elsewhere. I have noticed some unsettling results of the change in ownership. Food counter has stopped carrying Neutske's smoked ham. They used to sell it by the slice which meant we didn't have to buy a whole ham to have a couple of slices with eggs. In bakery, I usually picked up a couple of sandwich breads from Guglhupf. Price used to be the same or just a little bit more at SS. Last one I got was $5.75 for bread Guglhupf charges $3.75 for. Not a good sign. I'll take the time to go to Durham next time. I used to think Southern Season was a local treasure. Now it's starting to become less relevant.
Lunch in Greensboro, NC
Thanks for your post, Hungry Man. We were in Greensboro the other day and headed over to Sticks and Stones for Pizza after it was also recommended by the counter person at Giacomo's when we stopped for Italian sausage. Pizza was terrific. Maybe the best crust around. Now that Bella Mia in Cary is closed for lunch, we're always on the lookout for good pizza. This was so good, we should have gotten a large.

Bread & Butter Bakery Chapel Hill
I got a baguette there that was everything a baguette should be. They told me they make cinnamon raisin bread on Tuesdays. I use cinnamon raisin bread for French Toast so I'll give it a try soon. And their berry muffins are wonderful but quite pricy to my way of thinking. It's a nice space with plenty of parking. I hope they do well.
Worst Bagels in Town would be more appropriate name.[Greensboro,NC]
I'm sorry. Worst Bagels in Town is in Greensboro, NC. I think it was on Battleground Rd. And for your information, we went to Manhattan Bagels in Cary the next day and stocked up. Their bagels are terrific. I will be a regular visitor.

Worst Bagels in Town would be more appropriate name.[Greensboro,NC]
It's called Best Bagels in Town. I guess if they called it Worst Bagels in Town, nobody would go. But that's what it is. I bought a dozen. We threw out 10 and 2 partially eaten ones. In my lifetime I have truly not found a bagel this dry and tasteless.
How's the rest of the food? I'll never know.
Lunch spots in Downtown Durham?
I can't believe nobody mentioned L'uva right there at ATC. Small, but oh, my. Daily lunch gives you choice of two from soup/salad/sandwich/pasta. Fish dishes are always outstanding and the salmon with lobster sauce, garlic potatoes and asparagus was not only outstanding, it was a huge portion for lunch. For a carb lover, their bread is outstanding even though it costs additional $2 at lunch - it comes with large helping of really good, fresh, garlicky pesto.
Although we usually wind up spending more than we planned because the bread and desserts are hard to resist, every meal we've had had been outstanding and memorable. Restaurant is quite small inside but there is outside seating with heat lamps that should come in handy.
If you haven't tried L'uva, website says small plates are half price from 4-6 on Thursdays. Seems like it would be a great way to get to know L'uva.
Giacomo Italian in Greensboro
Thanks bbqme. I've seen sampler packs of different sliced salamis. I'm looking for hot and/or sweet Italian sausage. I usually shop at Southern Village but I'll go into Carrboro and take a look.
Giacomo Italian in Greensboro
It's probably been 2 years since High Point Rd. closed. Pastrami is still wonderful as are his Italian sausages. I can get pastrami at Weaver Street, but need to make the trip for sausages.
L'Uva in Durham Now Open
You're right, foodie. Jim isn't the chef although he was there at lunchtime when we were there and I am easily confused. Sorry about that.
L'Uva in Durham Now Open
We made it down to Durham today for lunch at L'Uva and I am glad to report it was wonderful. I think Jim Anile is a genius when it comes to fish and the roasted grouper was as good as any fish dish we've had anywhere. Plating looked as good as the fish tasted. Pasta with sausage was almost as good. And nutella gelato surrounded by finely chopped hazelnuts is a tasty dessert. My only complaint with lunch has to do with bread. They charge for bread and it looks impressive, with roasted garlic and olive oil and pesto. Had our waiter told us about it, we certainly would have ordered it. But we didn't know until one of the tables near us got it. It seems pretty special and worth the extra couple of bucks. Scallop salad looked grand as it passed our table and I'm sorry I didn't order it. Next time. And there definitely will be a next time. I'm definitely whelmed.
Wedding in Littleton...where to eat?!
We're from LA originally and found a hotel chain we love called Element by Westin. Nicely designed rooms, modern, spotless. They have one not far from Littleton in Lone Tree. Also, for food, try Bang on 32nd St., Denver. Best we found. It will make you happy.

Cafe Poca Cosa still worth it?
We were there today for lunch and were totally blown away. We got into Tucson on Sunday night and by Monday we were ready for some good Mexican food. Unfortunately Cafe Poca Cosa is closed on Monday so we went to the most highly recommended Mexican restaurant we could find. El Charro, the one downtown, the original and supposedly the best. What a disappointment. The famous beef was just ok. Fried fish tacos pretty good, grilled fish tacos made my husband ask me what he was supposed to be eating. Dull rice and gluey beans completed our first taste of Tucson. But there was hope. By Tuesdaya, Cafe Poca Cosa was open and there we were. Salsa and chips to the table. I could have eaten a gallon of the salsa. Complex and simply perfect. The best salsa we've ever had and we did 20 years in L.A. when L.A. was good. Flush with excitement, we ordered from the daily menu. Chef's choice for me, Flounder Vera Cruz for my husband. All thrilling, perfectly cooked and everything we were hoping for find in Tucson. Plates are gigantic at lunch, supposedly bigger at dinner and I can't imagine how anyone can finish although it would be a delight to try. We've got another 5 days in Tucson and my guess is we'll spend at least 2 or 3 more at Cafe Poca Cosa, giving Suzanna Davila a chance to delight us over and over again. Service was first rate. Everyone was pleasant and professional. I don't think we'll find a better meal in Tucson. If we do, I'll let you all know.
Roadtrip along I-40. Please help.
We are leaving soon on long road trip and need suggestions for memorable lunches and dinners along the route. We're not in any rush and prefer nice places and fair prices. Not looking for BBQ, hot dogs or fried chicken. Suggestions, please. We'll post what we tried, what we loved and what we didn't. Thanks.
What restaurants in Albuquerque are truly good and not just good for Albuquerque?
We were in Aluquerque a year or two ago and had a most memorable dinner at the Standard Diner. I had one of the specials which may have been duck tacos and it was right up there among the best things I ever ate. We'll be back next week so please tell me if Standard Diner is still good. I didn't see it on anyone's list.

Shiitake Mushrooms in Western Wake/Chatham?
I don't know if they're log grown, but I get fresh shitakes by the bagfull at the Asian market next to Guglhupf and most recently at the new big box market just South of Target where Circuit City used to be. They usually have fresh shitakes at the Harris Teeter on 15/501 North of Fearrington Village. They are more delicate than the ones I get at Asian groceries so maybe they're log grown. I'm more an eater than a botanist.

Anniversary Dinner in Wilmington
We were in Wilmington a couple of weeks ago and were surprised to find it was restaurant week. So we decided to try some new restaurants and see if any could be added to our list of favorites. To start, our favorites are DeLuxe by a landslide, before the new chef took over, and Catch. We really like Keith Rhodes approach to cooking seafood with an oriental leaning.
Restaurants we tried were Caprice where the food was quite good, not great, and the noise level was intolerable. We had full dinners including soup, salad, main course was fish for both of us, and we split a dessert. Service was best part of the dinner. Next day was lunch at The Basics which was very, very good. Order of fried oysters was best I can remember. Husband had meatloaf and finished every bite. It was the best meal we had during our 2 day trip. Dinner that night was at Cameo 1900 which got some good reviews and we love the flexibility of a tapas menu but we later both agreed we should have walked out. Out near Landfall, the place looks like a movie set in a hookers apartment, all red walls and modern furniture from DWR. Menu had some choices that sounded interesting so we stayed and ordered. Shrimp dish was ok, macaroni and cheese was huge size, rich and heavy, two other dishes not good enough to remember. I think there was something light with cucumber. My impression was these were the only dishes the cook knew how to make, all thrown together and called tapas. Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong (and often am.) Next on our list to try was Fish Bites out toward Carolina Beach. Oysters were nowhere near as good as The Basics. Fish was greasy. It's a dive but we had high hopes since they said their menu that week was highlighting all the best dishes on the menu. A waste of time, except for the fact that we stopped at the seafood market up the street and got a couple of dozen oysters to take home that were fresh, briny and delicious.
In order to regain our love of Wilmington restaurants, we'll have to come back and try our old favorites again. I'm sure they won't disappiont.
In fact,
Cooking classes in Raleigh durham?
Revolution in Durham has cooking class once or twice a month on Sunday. Hands on followed by lunch. Sounds like a productive way to spend a day. I have not been but got a gift certificate that I will be using soon.
Help Us Choose a Lunch Spot in Cary / Raleigh
How about Bella Mia? Best pizza in the state, easily. Roasted vegetable platter is a salad eater's delight. And if they'd rather have a more traditional salad, they offer 2 or 3 different ones at lunch. Place is warm, wonderful and welcoming. Near SAS campus in Cary. Convenient for you all. I don't think you'll find a better lunch anywhere.

FYI If you're talking about Hong Kong on Guess Rd. in Durham, it is definitely not a buffet place. They have carts on weekends and menu ordering during the week.
Emeril Lagasse coming to Charlotte
I was delighted to read this bit of news. Emeril's restaurant in Atlanta was such a home to us, we haven't been to Atlanta since it closed. We'll make the trip to Charlotte when it opens. Besides serving outstanding food, every aspect of a visit to Emeril's restaurants usually is a delight. If the food, service and hospitality are anywhere close to Atlanta, we'll be frequent visitors.
Raleigh NC - Lunch in Area of Northgate/Crabtree Area?
Good choice. Coquette is great. And if you decide you want sushi, I'd pick Waraji (N. of Glenwood) over Mura (North Hills) any day.
What happened to La Russa's?
I know someday, you'll decide to go to Bella Mia for some of their fantastic pizza. Well, BJs is on the way. There's a Earthfare across the street from BJs where I go for fresh seafood after being spoiled when there was an Earthfare in Chapel Hill. Yes, we drive a long way to get there. But methinks it's totally worth it.

Top Restaurants in Chapel Hill?
Right now, I think Kitchen is the place. Casual, open for lunch and dinner, well executed, imaginative dishes, good service, fair prices. It's a new restaurant that knows what it's doing. On Airport Rd (Martin Luther King Blvd) in the strip center where Fosters is.
What happened to La Russa's?
Don't feel bad. BJs is a warehouse membership club, much like Sams or Costco. There are two around here, one in Briar Creek near the airport and one in Cary near Crossroads Plaza. If you don't have a membership, they'll give you a trial membership. It's a surprising place to find Mario Batali products but according to the soup package, BJs is the only place to find his line of products. Package of ravioli was $8.99 and I think there are 32 per package. 4 makes a good serving for me, 5 or 6 for husband. I think soup was same price and has 2 containers or 4 servings. Good stuff, good price, especially for the ravioli.
