new to NYC - shopping advice pls..
complete side note: as a guy who loves his pizza (not chicago pizza) i've been testing out the local favorites. so i went to the highly rated john's recently (not a fan i must say)...and then as i was walking around my new apt i ran into a patsy's and noticed that the menus are nearly identical. Is there a reason for this?

new to NYC - shopping advice pls..
Hi all, moving to NYC from the windy city. After much consternation on neighborhoods I've taken a place in the 60s and 3rd (close to office but seemingly empty on ethnic hole in the wall eateries...diff topic). Since I'm new to the area and need to stock a kitchen - am hoping you guys can advise me on the best places for:
Fresh veg/fruit (local organic a big plus)
Fish monger
General grocer
Spice market
Cutlery/tools(in chicago we have Lake Street Cutlery in the restaurant supply district)
My bias tends toward places that are high on ingrediants/product and low on ambiance.
If you have suggestions in departments not listed above pls let me know...I gotta figure this place out somehow.
Thank you very much.
Source for Anago in Miami
Hi - looking for Unagi. Down in Miami for a cpl weeks from Chicago. Up there I have a good source for frozen prepared unagi for when I make sushi at home. Would like to find similar source here in Miami. Can anyone direct me? Many thanks.
Guys night out
Yeah live in chicago - but hoping folks can recommend a new place out there as i've been cooped up and outta the circut on baby patrol for a while....steak joints or better bars - really anything that you'd think of as a "guys" night out place - not dainty....not the club feel. thanks veyr much.
Guys night out
Hi All - Anyone have recommendations on spots for a guys night out? Three 30 sumthing guys. In an area where we can go out after - or easy cab. In the city....Bucktown/(n/s/w)Loop/LP....
Look forward to any novel/new spots. Thanks
Aigredoux
Well - frankly no. At those prices (and when they are extracting so much for the wine the rest of the dinner had such a high hurdle) it just didn't come close. The service was fine. But it should always be, so no points there. The food was a disapointment - out of the 5 dishes i tried 1 was really good and the others were "ok" or just plain off - that is a poor hit ratio. The desserts were very good, but I really don't go out to dinner for the desserts -
Aigredoux
Anyone have any recent visit experience at Aigredoux?
I went last night in a party of six and had pretty marginal reaction -
I was pretty turned off by the fact that the cheapest wine on the list was $50 and quickly got to $100 - this seemed out of context with entrees in the mid to high $20s.
The service was attentive, very knowledgeable, ready and seemed genuinely happy to be there. One obvious miss...they served my soup and delivered no spoon??
Food - I thought the menu was diverse and pretty creative. But at the end of the day the flavors of the couple dishes I had and tried of my dinner mates just seemed off (genuine exception was the roasted lobster bucatini which was on the money). The dessets stole the show in my opinion. The pastry chef is working some magic back there.
Am curious what others have thought...did i get a reasonable impression or was last night not the restarants best performance?
Great little Mexican joint in Pilsen
More in the carnitas type style - but they offer a variety of stews each day and some other specials from interesting tameles or ceviche. Simple fare done well.
Great little Mexican joint in Pilsen
After about nine months of visitng a randomly selected (or Chowhound recommended) mexican spot in the Pilsen area (i've been there every saturday morning) I have finally found a rough gem worthy of posting. Carnitas Tariacuri at 18th St. Throop Street.
Yes they do Carnitas - but this breakfast and lunch diner has so much heart and warmth in the depth of dishes i just keep going back. Give it a try and enjoy the variety they can offer...or ask them to prepare off menu. The Rocha family is clearly happy in their new spot (having recently assumed management after the previous owner deceased) and it really shows in the service and kitchen.
