Restaurant suggestions near the Apollo Theater?

I had dinner at Merlo La Salumeria before seeing Million Dollar Quartet and it was fantastic. The food was great but the service was stellar. We arrived late for our reservation due to traffic and so were limited in the time we had for dinner. Our waiter was very accomodating, he gave us suggestions for ordering so we could get served more quickly. We even had time for dessert. We didn't feel overly rushed altho we had less than an hour for dinner. It's an upscale, a little pricey restaurant but for a really lovely dinner, I highly recommend it. Oh, and they make their own pasta.

trader Joe's - baking soda in a classic baking powder container

I really like being able to get baking soda in a resealable tin and was happy to see it at TJ's.
Trader Joe's has a generous return policy. I'm sure they will take it back, just tell them what happened.

Best Thai in Andersonville?

In that area, my favorites are Rosded, Spoon Thai, the place near Sticky Rice, maybe the Thai Room (on Western). There used to be a place on Broadway in Edgewater just north of Thorndale that was also good; the name escapes me.

Intelligentsia in Western Suburbs

The coffee at Buzz Cafe is Metropolis (another fantastic coffee)
At Delia's Kitchen in Oak Park (the old Maple Tree) they serve Intelligentsia but I don't know if you can just walk in a get a cup to go.

French Market

As a Metra communter in and out of Ogilvie train station, I find it a nice option once in awhile. I have picked up sandwiches from Pastoral, candy and sweets from the various "sweet" vendors, the Belgian fries are awesome. There are a couple produce-type markets and I have picked up fruits and veggies to go with dinner. There is also a place with fresh meats that could be taken home to prepare. Pastoral, with it's gourmet meats and cheeses always seems to be popular for sandwiches or meats and cheese to take home or to a picnic in Millenium Park for someone coming into the station in the evening.
You're right, it's kind of out of the way for most people except those that happen to be in that area but I think it has some nice options.

Lunch places along I-55 between Bolingbrook & Chicago

I would also suggets Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket, really tasty fried chicken.
Also at the Rt 83 exit North, there is a Patio (ribs/BBQ) in Darien, it's not the most fabulous food but pretty tasty.

Only one shot at breakfast: Ina's, Lou Mitchell's, Ann Sather ???

I would not go to Ann Sather (it is just not that good, I don't know where it got that reputation) or Lou Mitchells. Ina's is ok, pretty standard breakfast; it's not bad but wouldn't be my first choice. In the South Loop, I'd recommend Yolk, Bongo Room or Orange; M Henry is also fabulous but not close to downtown.

Choco-banana hunt

The Diana's brand is also sold at Whole Foods sometimes. I didn't like the Trader Joe's version. I ate part of one and returned the rest of the box. But Diana's Bananas are delicious!

Popcorn in Naperville & Western suburbs

I have not eaten the popcorn from Naper Nuts and Sweets; I know it always smells good when I walk past. I had a sample from Kernel Fabyan's during the Geneva art fair and it was very good. I am particular about cheese and caramel popcorn and think most of what is out there isn't very good. But the Kernel Fabyan cheese popcorn was very good. If I was back out there sometime I think it would be worth the money.

1 FREE EVENING MAGNIFICENT MILE

I'd like to recommend Scoozi; It 's in the Lettuce Entertain You group of restaurants.
http://www.leye.com/restaurants/direc...
It's a little more casual than Cafe Spiaggia, and a more bustling atmosphere. It's not right on Michigan Av but not far. A more traditional type of Italian food.

Applebees

Al,
I have to agree with you. I've been to Applebee's plenty of times with work groups and never feel that food is very good. And there are so many other, good choices I don't see the point to spend my money there.

Spicy ice cream in Chicago?

Vosges has their Red Fire Ice Cream (I think that is the name) It's chocolate ice cream with spicy chili pepper. Very tasty. I've gotten it at Whole Foods, Fox & Obel might have it.

Chicago Chef Week - March 22-28, 2010

Does anyone know why Chef Week followed on the heels of Restaurant Week? Has there been a Chef Week previously? Just wondering if they found it a good way to fill tables during the week and wanted to keep that momentum going.
I ate at two places during the week, Vie in Western Springs and Lockwood in the Palmer House. Both were good experiences and a good way to try a new restaurant, especially Vie which is normally a little out of my price range. Lockwood was good but being the restaurant just off a very noisy lobby in the Palmer House, the atmosphere wasn't all that inviting. But the food and service were good.

Urbanbelly

I have been to Urban Belly twice and both times had a great experience. The food was delicious, service was good. I'm not crazy about the tables, they are big and I felt like I was far away from my dining companions but I would definitely go back again. I'm interested to try their other restaurant Belly Shack but haven't been yet.

Block 37 Mall?

Beard Papa is delicious!! I first tried it a couple months ago when I was on a trip to Singapore. The filling is very rich and creamy, I like the vanilla best, altho in Singapore they didn't have Strawberry so I have not tried that one. The chocolate on top is good quality and sooo good. I highly recommend trying it. I believe it's a Japanese company; strange name but so so good. The store in Block 37 seems to be still evolving because on the day I was there before xmas they didn't have a number of things on the menu yet,

If you look for restaurants in the South Loop, you won't be too far from Soldier Field. There are a number of places there ranging from casual to upscale.

Special Lunch Suggestions (I've trolled the board, but can find no consensus)

While Urban Belly is delicious, it's a world away from North Pond Cafe. It's very casual (order at the counter & community seating) so maybe not what you are looking for in a special lunch restaurant. I'm not familiar with Sarajevo Cafe.

Vacation in Seattle

I am vacationing in Seattle in July. We will be in the city for a day or two at the beginning of the trip and for the last nite; and in Forks, near Olympic, in between. Can you recommend some restaurants. We're coming from Chicago, so would like some seafood. We both like all types of food; moderate pricing altho we'll probably do one big splurge dinner. Any recommendations of where you like to eat? casual and also more fine dining; breakfast and lunch/dinner. We're not really looking for hip and trendy.

What should I order at TRU?

I dined at Tru about 5 years ago and got the Prix Fixe menu. I would go with that again. It was a lot of food, with courses in between the main courses and several desserts, and it was delicious, satisfying and a fabulous experience.

O'Charley's vs. Longhorn Steakhouse?

I haven't had ribs at any of these places but for overall quality and atmosphere I'd go with Longhorn Steakhouse first and then O'Charley's. Chili's would be a distant third
