Suggestion for an Obsessive?
Hey all-
Eric of CHOW video, thanks for the kind words. We're very proud of our Obsessives series, and happy to see that our viewers share the same pleasure in viewing it as we do in getting to meet these people and make films about them.
We were on a short hiatus but will be releasing the next in our series at the beginning of February.
Mike Wellik sounds great, though we don't get out to Delaware that often. But we'll add him to the list. Please keep the suggestions coming!
Eric

What kind of mint to grow?
Thanks MakingSense, I'll look for one of the 'for the pot' types of mint - Hortica, is a great place for anyone in SF, they have a great selection of mints.
mudaba-I'm going to be growing it outside, I think it does grow ok indoors, but it probably wouldn't yield what I'd want it to. Plus I've read that it take a lot of sun - and a lot of water, so it might be better outside.
I'll report back when I get my mint in the pot.

What kind of mint to grow?
thanks for the advise. I was definitely going to put it in a pot, but wasn't sure if I could plant two different types successfully in the same pot? Or if they'd duke it out like beta fish...
What kind of mint to grow?
I'm going to start growing mint in a pot on my back deck as I've grown tired of never using all the mint I get at the store in time.
But I want to use my mint for a few different purposes:
-morrocan dishes
-vietnamese
-mint juleps
I looked into getting the Kentucky Colonel (spearmint), which is supposedly the quintessential mint for cocktails, but I just worry it will be overpowering in the other dishes I want to make.
is there a versatile mint to grow for all these foods, or do you think the colonel will be good? I'd like to use some type of spearmint.
thanks!
Three Twins Ice Cream opens
The bittersweet chocolate was creamy and rich, but not too sweet.
I took a bite of my friend's cardamon, which was potent and full flavored, but I don't think I could handle a whole cone of it.
And they do have what I would consider the best cookies and cream I've ever had-the cookie chunks came in all shapes in sizes, some bites would be a welcomed addition to the vanilla ice cream, others were mostly cookie, which were crunchy on the outside and still soft on the inside. yum!
So happy lower haight got Three Twins, we really needed them.
Printing a recipe
Hey TheJeff and Arthurk
This is Eric of CHOW. Just wanted to let you know that we have finished the new layout for the print function (which is easy on the ink and eyes) and are just awaiting the engineers to make changes.
You should see the change in the next few weeks.
best,
Eric

Annoying Drum Beat in Videos
Hey junquelady-
This is Eric from CHOW video. I think you are referring to the beat that goes with the You're Doing it All Wrong videos, correct? The beat is part of the video file, so there is no way to eliminate it.
Though the beat is only used in that franchise, so you won't hear it in Chow Tips, Obsessives, The Perfect, Cooking with Grandma, or any other CHOW video.
When we looked back at some of these, we realized that the beat levels are a little high, so we'll bring them lower for future videos.
thanks for your note,
Eric

New CHOW video player
Thanks for sending your browser info. This is the first release of this new player and we expect it to get speedier (less jerky) as well as have multiple stream sizes (for slower connections or ones that can't process the video as well) in the following months.
Best,
Eric of CHOW video
New CHOW video player
@small h - Thanks for letting us know about the frames. As the people that shoot and edit the videos as well, you can understand that we definitely care about dropped frames. We'll investigate this issue. What browser are you using by the way?
@John E O - We are right now serving one file, a 700k FLV. Though we are actively working on implementing dynamic streaming (300k + 500k) based one a viewer's connection, as well as adding HD videos (these are MPEG-4) for people that want an even better viewing experience. These changes should be implemented in the months to come.
Thanks,
Eric

I think it's a totally rad feature with greatly improved design and functionality...but I am only one man.
groceries and cheap (meaning *cheap*) eats in hayes valley/lower haight?
honestly btr, I don't think good pizza exists in lower haight. I agree with you about Patxi's in hayes valley, and have enjoyed Cybelle's Pizza on 14th (across from the bar Amber). And getting further away in a few directions, Litte Star on Divisadero and Pauline's on Valencia are both great (Pauline's especially because they have crayons and paper table covers on every table, and their own table wine)--but in terms of good pizza in the immediate lower haight area, I believe we're in the stone ages.

I agree that mythic is cheap---and at the end of the night it doesn't always matter how good the food is, but a bunch of people I know-myself included-have had bad experiences with the food (on non-drinking nights). The other pizza place down the block past fillmore, Volare, sells a 10" pie for $4.99--but its typically a ghost town in there for good reason--I was lured in once on my way home from work--big mistake...[sigh] if lower haight only had Arinell's.

Relaxed Restaurants on Polk Street or Filmore?
Tajine is definitely high on the list (though they did implement a pretty decent price hike from their last location)--but another really great and laid back place is Cordon Bleu, which is a tiny Vietnamese counter joint--simple but awesome menu with big portions and great imperial rolls.

Love and Haight is a good recommendation, but I'm pretty sure they don't carry meat--they do have a bunch of vegan options (most of which are the specialty fake meat sandwiches you're referring to) though.

As a resident of lower haight, I would have to agree on pretty much everything said--with the inclusion of Ali Baba's Cave-which if you don't mind a little grime makes a great, cheap shawarma as well as some of the best hummus in the city. Beyond Estela's sandwiches, they also make a pretty mean smoothie (spoiler: closed on Sundays)
Kate's Kitchen is worth mentioning-but I don't care how good someone's home-style potatoes are, I'm not waiting 40 minutes for breakfast. I typically defer to J's Pot of Soul, which what lacks in fresh ingredients makes up for in....well, hush puppies. (To the right of the framed picture of Whoopi Goldberg is a really neat photo of what the place looked like in the 50's.)
And thank God for a decent butcher in the area, all it took was a stroll past Lo-Cost Meat in the afternoon-and the stink was enough to keep me away forever! (though they do stock some offal).
And I'm still waiting for the Iraqi restaurant down the street to open up (the sign says something ambiguous like 'first Iraqi restaurant here").

Debate: tea at your workstation?
Here at CHOW some drink tea at our desks (replete with an assortment of loose leaf teas and infusers)-but others are skeptical about whether this is a common practice. Please weigh in. Do others drink tea at work, and have tea gear sprawling over expense reports and notepads? or if they drink tea is it just with the break room tea bags?
Is the food any good at cinema eateries like Studio Movie Grill?
Interesting. thanks a lot guys!
Is the food any good at cinema eateries like Studio Movie Grill?
I'm doing research for a story to run on Chow.com, and was wondering if anyone's been to these places popping up like Movie Tavern, Studio Movie Grill, etc.
Is the food good? Are the ingredients fresh, the choices somewhat interesting? Have you gotten alcohol there, and if so how are the drinks?
Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

BBQ near Point Arena? (mendocino)
So we're taking a day trip up the coast to see a show at the Arena Theatre in Point Arena, and frankly, BBQ makes any sunday afternoon better. Does anyone know of any good BBQ in or around this area?
if not, anyone know of any funkier places, not really looking for upscale, but somewhere with character?
any help would be appreciated-thanks!
Podcasts?
Hey markmen-
It is actually possible to download the podcasts. all you need to do is scroll over to the down facing arrows in the podcast box--when scrolled over it will turn red. Click it, and it will download the zipped .mp3 for you. If its a mac, it should automatically bring up Stuffit to uncompress it, and on PC just use any unzipping software. You'll then have an .mp3 that you can drag into your Ipod. hope this helps.
