Camp 31 in Paris is a good spot for BBQ.

It couldn't be a more different dining experience from Langdon Hall which is exceptional in every way, as I'm sure you know.

Vancouver Asian Fusion in the NY Times

From today's NY Times Frugal Traveler column.

Niagara wine region

We spend quite a bit of time in the Jordan area really enjoy Fielding (2007 Pinot Gris is really wonderful), the honey from Rosewood Estates (thier Chardonnay is nice too), Angel's Gate Reislings, Flat Rock and Tawse are stunning wineries, Malivoire makes one of the nices roses in Ontario (Ladybug Rose).

If you are interested in a very small winery, Organized Crime on Mountainview Road is very good. The wine consultant is Andrzej Lipinski, one of the best in Canada. Very mice unoaked Chardonnay and a lovely Chardonnnay Musque we are quite fond of.

If you are going to NOTL, Stone Road Grille is wonderful - local ingredients throughfuly prepared, also highly recommend Olson's and for something much more casual the Pie Plate in Virgil is kinda fun.

good eats in Etobicoke

Looking forward to hearing your opinion.

etobicoke grocery/restaurant suggestions

Bonchef is strictly gardening now. Sadly, all the food products were removed late last summer.

Diners, drive-ins and dives

Thanks, everyone!

Richters Herbs - Wasabi Plants

My very first part-time job was at Richters. Now that I think about it, I was a foodie at 14!
Mr. and Mrs. Richter taught me everything I know about cooking herbs. They and their staff were so helpful with customers, and really took the time to share their knowledge. I have great memories from there. It's nice to know things haven't changed.

good eats in Etobicoke

Ok, you're going to have to take my word on this, but the best fish and chips in Etobicoke...I would argue the city...are from a greasy spoon called High Seas on Islington, about 5 blocks south of Bloor. West side, beside the Tim Horton's.
We get the halibut and chips for take-away at least once a month...a total yum.
Sadly, your Sunday cravings will not be satisfied there.
Good luck with your food search and the baby.

Diners, drive-ins and dives

My SO and I watch this show from time to time on Food TV. There must be places in Ontario like the ones the host visits in each episode.

With summer coming, a road trip to a funky, hole-in-the-wall place with unusually good food has to be any foodies' idea of fun, no?

Anyone willing to share their favourite diner, drive-in or dive destination in Ontario?

NOTL/Port Dalhousie patio as travelling with dogs

Treadwell's. We were there at the end of April and it was one of the best meals we've had in the region...and we've spent quite a bit of eating time there. We even got married in Jordan. Treadwell's for sure.

Hot Oven Bakery @ Cloverdale Mall

The Cloverdale Mall Hot Oven makes the best butter tarts in the city. Period.

Looking for good take out in Etobicoke

No offence taken, and I agree with most of your suggestions and can say the after three visits to Pho House, the pho is better than okay, but not great.

What can I say, I have some fun looking for good things in unremarkable, often seemingly impossible, places. Sometimes it lasts only for only a little while, since staff turnover at many of these kinds of places is blindlngly fast. And while I certainly opened myself up to criticism for a seemingly dubious recommendation, I do stand by it. The wings at B&E on Tuesday night were good. And before you get all uppity about places non-teens should or should not go, let's remember wings are bar food. The Anchor Bar was nothing more than a local "watering hole" in Buffalo. I'm just saying, don't knock it 'til you try it.

Scotch Eggs?

Thanks!

Looking for good take out in Etobicoke

I'm not surprised. Like I said, we are not at all interested in eating anything else on the menu.

All I can say is that the wings were very good each of the three or four times we have been there in the last year.

Scotch Eggs?

Thanks, everyone!
Never heard of the Brazen Head. Where is it?
And welsh rarebit at crush - how interesting!

Looking for good take out in Etobicoke

I agree with most of these.
BTW, The sushi "other place" has closed and re-opened as Sushi 2 Go. We usually go to Momiji - good sushi, much better service that Gojima

We did find very tasty chicken wings at Bert and Ernies on Dundas at The East Mall, of all places. Good chips, too. Haven't eaten anything else there, and I'm not sure I'd want to. But the wings were very good by west-end standards.

Scotch Eggs?

Now I have a reason to go to BMO Field...next year.
The craving persists.

ISO a good, strong hard Canadian Cheese

Balderson makes a 5 year-old white cheddar that is very crumbly and well-aged. One of my favourites.

Scotch Eggs?

I've had the craving for a while. And now I'm desperate.
Any ideas where I can find scotch eggs downtown or in the west end?

ISO beef short ribs

European Meats regularly has the flank-style. I had to show the butcher how to cut the English-style and at that, they were not happy to do so. Haven't gone back there for this cut.

New Whole Foods Location??

I have heard rumours about one coming to the Sherway Gardens area.

La Petite France

It changed ownership earlier this year. I am sorry I didn't have a chance to visit the restaurant while it was his, he sounds quite charming.

La Petite France

It's a nice little place for a casual (weeknight?) dinner. We were there a couple of months ago. It didn't knock our socks off, but we didn't leave saying we would never go back either.
While our main courses were unmemorable (I honestly can't remember what I ate!), the lemon tart I had for dessert was really lovely.

Help, our sushi place is gone

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll let you know how what we think.

Help, our sushi place is gone

The sushi place near Dundas & Kipling that we were regulars at (Ichiban) closed while we were eating our way around France last month. What, they didn't think we were coming back???

Anyway, now we’re looking for a good weeknight place close to home that doesn’t break the bank.

We're not overly fond of Gojima (Bloor & Islington), and Sushi 2 Go gives my Japanese-Canadian husband an vaguely unpleasnt feeling.

Has anyone been to Kame (a couple of doors west of Gojima)?

Other suggestions in the vacinity would be so appreciated, as we are experiencing withdrawal symptoms and it’s getting ugly.

Dining in Perth

The Hungry Planet is a must when you are in Perth. They have been in Where to Eat in Canada since they opened years ago and recently there was (another) very, very positive article/review in the Ottawa Citizen. Here is a link: http://www.finerkitchens.com/swap/forum1/55615_From_the_Ottawa_Citizen_Wed_June_20_2007____The_Perfect_Picnic_Article_&_

I have been many, many times. The hours are not suited to dinner, but lunch is great and they do great take away.

And I also second the reco on Foodsmiths and the Sunflower Bake Shop.

Perth is a lovely town, I hope you enjoy yourself as much as I do when I visit.

Wanda's Pie in the Sky -- still there?

Yes. About a block east of Kipling Avenue, south of Dundas on Six Point Road.

Meyer Lemons in Toronto

The Cheese Boutique has them.

Outrageous Brownies-Barefoot Contessa

I make these every couple of months and have varied the recipe a little.

Use 6 oz. 85% cocoa chocolate and 1 lb of Lindt semisweet chocolate for the chocolate melted with the butter part, and 6 oz of semi-sweet chocolate chips added to the batter at the end.

Put 3/4 of the walnuts into the brownie batter and sprinkle the rest on the top just before baking for a nice finish.

I line the pan with a sheet of parchment rather than the butter and flour nonsense, and just let the paper hang over the edges. With the parchment, you can lift the brownies out of the pan and onto the counter for cutting. And this way there is no pan to wash up. This step alone makes the brownies taste better, I think.

I also ignore the tester and trust that the brownies that do not look cooked after 30 minutes are, in fact, perfect and should be removed from the oven immediately.

Finally, I let the brownies cool on the counter and then put the pan in the fridge for at least 8 hours before cutting/eating.
