Mom coming to KC

I second the Le Fou Frog rec. Do you know where it is? Downtown in the Market Place. Tons of atmosphere and great French food.

NY Style pizza in KC?

I think that was my post, but I can't find it either. Still haven't found NY style pizza here in the KC yet but I haven't been to D'Bronx. Looking forward to that one.

New KC Brazillian Steakhouse

Hi!
We ate there about 2 weeks ago. I had a gift card for $40 so we went with our neighbors. Totally agree with you on your synopsis. I really liked the sides, but of course since it's all you can eat they just want to fill you up before the meat comes. I loved the polenta triangles - very tasty.

We started with the drinks from the cart (which if I remember were around $9 each but I had 3 and couldn't remember much after that). The waitress asked if we wanted sparkling water or still water. Thinking it was included in the $43.99/person we got sparkiling. Then, they added $6/person to the bill for the water. Our bill for 4 people came to $350 which included the tip. It was a nice experience (I'd been to a couple Churrascarias before) but would probably not go again because of the insane price which only includes the 'salad bar', sides and the meat.

Best Martini Bar in Kansas City

OK, this isn't really a martini bar, but they do have a martini menu (does that count?). Last night we went to the Cashew for martinis before dinner. Corner of 20th & Grand? Something like that. Right down the street from the Western Auto building. Great cherry limeade martinis and yummy appetizers (we had the corn dip - pieces of corn mixed with sour cream, onions & tomatoes with corn chips). They advertise live music but we left early to go get dinner. A+ for atmosphere - we sat out on the street but I love the building & garage doors that make it all open and pretty flower boxes. Nice touch and pretty well priced (martinis are $9 but appetizers range from $6 to $9). We need more places like that downtown.

KC's best fish & chips

Sounds good - another place to try! Where is McCoy's?

KC's best fish & chips

I've been conducting a discrete survey about town in a quest for the city's best fish & chips. Over the past 2 years I've eaten it at many locations and so far the winner is 75th Street Brewery. Although the chips are home made potato chips (and not authentic English 'chips') the fish batter is so light and flaky and the fish so moist and tasty with an incredibly yummy sauce - I haven't found anything to top it.

So, KC hounds - what is your favorite spot for F&C? I'm looking for more places to try.

Dinner by Kansas City Int'l Airport (MCI)?

Good point. They probably have better curries in SF anyway or at least more to choose from.

The Majestic in KC

We ate at the Savoy a couple years ago and sat in a booth next to the wall. I saw 2 COCKROACHES crawling from the table up to the wall and then on the floor in the hall next to the bathroom. When I got back to the table, I called the manager over. He said that it was "normal" because they had just sprayed the building which was making them all come out but that they would be dead shortly. I was so completely horrified...That took the cake for the absolute worst dining experience ever. Too bad because architecturally it's an interesting building. I'll just never eat there again.

Dinner by Kansas City Int'l Airport (MCI)?

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the suggestions. Piropos is excellent (service & food), Arthur Bryants or Jack Stack barbecue (definitely second the rec from Mushroom on what to order if you go to Jack Stack - that's my favorite to) and Stroud's chicken (hope you're not on a cholesterol restricted diet, but it is tasty). I think there is also an Indian restaurant in Zona Rosa but the name escapes me. I heard it's good - maybe someone else knows if that's right?

Big Biscuit in KC.

Where is the Pegah's in Olathe? I'll have to go check it out. Always looking for new weekend breakfast places.

KC Newbie

Every time we go to 75th Street for fish & chips I take home a growler of Root Beer for the kids (and of course I end up drinking half of it). Very yummy. 75th Street between Ward Parkway and Wornall.
Our favorite b-b-que is Fiorello's Jack Stack in Martin City. 135th & Holmes (not far from Overland Park or Olathe). Get the burnt ends or the sampler platter with plenty of sides (cheesy corn bake, beans are to die for, onion ring tower). Gosh - my mouth just watered. I think I'll need to eat there again very soon.
We always tell first-time out of towners not to miss the Country Club Plaza and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. The museum also has live jazz music and a bar in the courtyard every Friday afternoon/evening. Food was just OK last time I had lunch in there - many other great restaurants in KC but the museum is outstanding.
If you like music we have lots of great jazz & blues clubs all over the city and out in the burbs (not as many in the burbs). Recommend you pick up a paper to see who is playing where and when.
One of the more original menus is at 40 Sardines (119th & Roe) but a little more pricy.
Have fun!

Need req for KC High Tea pls

Thanks! I love going to the KC Culinary Institute. Unfortunately I'll be out of town this weekend but maybe next year!

Need req for KC High Tea pls

Great - thanks everyone. I'll give them a call and see what we can work out. I'll keep you posted if we make it to any of them.

CC City Broiler-Overland Park

I ate there about 2 years ago and also remember it being very good, cheaper than Ruth's Chris and it is very close to where I live so I have no idea why we have not been back since. Maybe because it wasn't memorable enough for me to write about what I had or the fact that we have so many choices when we decide to eat out that I want something ethnic instead of a steak that I could cook at home? No clue. I liked it though. Steaks were fresh, sides were yummy & service was good - sorry that's all I can remember.

Need req for KC High Tea pls

Hi - sorry, but I seem to remember someone else asking for this not too long ago and I couldn't find the string. My mother is coming into town next week and I need to find a 'real' place for high tea in the KC area or O.P. I'm talking scones, sandwiches, bits of yummy cakes, the works...
Thanks!
Pam

Kansas City: Brand New -or- Coming Soon

Not yet and none that I can find. I'll keep checking and let you know.

KC chowhound needs Wichita ethnic food reqs please

Wow! Some how I missed this post last month but I'm printing it out because I go back at least once/month and this is awesom. The only one I've already been to on the list is Yia Yias and it is good. We also have one here at 119th & Roe. Thanks!!!

TOP DESSERTS IN FLA

Hands down - Tres Leches with cuban coffee at Versailles, Miami and I second the vote for ice cream at Jaxson's (any flavor will do with a side car of chocolate sauce).

KC chowhound needs Wichita ethnic food reqs please

Thanks! I'll definitely check them out. I'm stuck in a hotel so will have lots of opportunities so if you have time to post the others it is much appreciated. I found an Indian place (one of two in town I'm told) so I'm going tomorrow night. I'll keep you posted. I've also heard good things about The Oasis burgers and the Uptown Bistro.

Where do the Kansas City Foodies like to shop for, what else, food?

For meat I go to Rancher's Gourmet (135th & Metcalf) because it's too far for me to get to McGonigles.

For specialty items like sauces, jams, teas, desserts, etc. I go to Dean & Deluca (119th & Roe).

Bread - Artisian Francais (119th across from Sprint)

Indian market at 119th & Metcalf in Rosewood Shopping Ctr.

Everything else (produce, etc.) I like Whole Foods (92nd & Metcalf) or Wild Oats (119th St. across from Sprint).

Do NOT go to the Dillons at 143rd & Metcalf. It is the worst with absolutely no selection and expired items on the shelf.

KC chowhound needs Wichita ethnic food reqs please

Hi!
I'll be in Wichita for the next 3 weeks and am looking for reqs for ethnic food (Indian, Thai, Mexican, South American, French, Persian, sushi, etc.). Appreciate any suggestions that will get me out of the hotel.
Thanks in advance.

BBQ in Kansas City

My favorite is Jack Stack located in Martin City which is just south of KC (135th St. and Holmes Rd.). Best burnt ends and onion rings in town. I'm always too stuffed to try dessert but those look really good to.

miami everything

Last week I had a strawberry shake (best I've ever had), cinnamon rolls and the pineapple upside-down cake. Yum!

Kansas City: Brand New -or- Coming Soon

Have you tried Fortune Wok at 145th & Metcalf? I just went there Friday night and it was great. I had salmon, but my husband tried the sushi and thought it was very good. Appetizers were also tasty and nicely presented. Staff was very pleasant. I think one of the better Chinese places in Johnson Cty (for whatever that's worth).

Kansas City: Brand New -or- Coming Soon

Where is Avenues Bistro?

Best bakery in KC?

That's hilarious. Have you been in there lately? I was wondering if you think there is a difference since the ownership changed.

Best bakery in KC?

How can anyone complain about Johnson Cty eateries when there is such bread to be had! Got the pain au chocolat and a baguette - just like I remember. It was perfect!

Best bakery in KC?

Great - thanks! I'll go check it out this weekend.

Best bakery in KC?

Hi!
Has anyone tried the new French bakery in Overland Park? I seem to remember seeing something in the paper on it and can't remember where it is or what it's called. I believe it's owned by a husband/wife duo.

I used to go to the French bakery Café Apanaire in Waldo which was built and run by a wonderful French baker about 4 years ago. I went in there some months ago to find it bought out by a Russian family (?). The menu had changed and I don't think the bread was as good. I'm looking for baquettes of the same quality you get in France and breakfast yummies like pain au chocolat.

Also - any good recs on Challah bread? I usually go to Dean & Deluca. Any others? Thanks!

Kansas City New Years 2006

I heard that 40 Sardines (corner of 119th & Roe) has a New Year's dinner that's out of this world (5 courses with wine pairings?). Will be a little more expensive - I'm thinking approx. $100/person but I can't remember from last year's flyer. I haven't done the New Year's thing there but it's one of my favorite restaurants.
