humane raised veal in san diego?

You are looking for "Rose Veal", but sorry I can't give you a SD source. (Now ask me where to get kangaroo steaks in SD and I can help you. You might have to go mail order on the veal).

Where do you go to get your raspados (Mexican shaved ice) fix?

I love Raspados Y Churros Frutal in Canoga Park at 20849 Sherman Way (NE corner of Desoto and Sherman Way).

They have a great selection of Raspados including my favorite--WALNUT!

The phone number is (818) 710-3907.

Feast of San Gennaro this weekend

Be prepared to spend a lot of money...nothing is included for the $5.00 admission. The kid rides are a scam and very expensive for fair-style rides and of course add $$$ for parking. I hate to say it, but as an Italian-American, the Feast in LA is embarrassing---a lot pile of 'Guido' looking men with stereotypical wife beater shirts, tattoos and gold medallions. The last two years we have gone and the whole block has been sales of cheesy Chinese-made personal fans, "Parking for Italians Only" signs and so on---with a thousand Italian men sporting Italia shirts and hairy chests.

The comedy acts were okay and I got to chat with Slash (of GNR) last year.

The food has been average depending on the booth, but again, everything added up and the whole afternoon cost me a pile of cash....not going again...Hey!! Jimmy Kimmel!! Do you hear me??!! Make it a classy event with decent attractions and don't kill my wallet!

My First Gordon Ramsey Kitchen Nightmares Experience: Lido - Before and After

Funny story! My wife and I got to eat at Hell's Kitchen (upcoming season 7). It was actually a great time! Gordon was nice as hell (no pun intended) off camera and they plied us all you can drink wine (which funny enough was NOT from his wine line--even on camera). The food was very good (with minor issues we and the producer hyped to get on camera (scallops overcooked, pasta undercooked)). You can't hear a thing going on in the kitchen from the dining area. All free---soups to nuts, even valet!

As for past KN, the Secret Garden restaurant in Moorpark is a disaster! Six months post-a## reaming, the owner, an arrogant Frenchie, instituted nothing from Gordon, even remounting the original old signage. I went there for lunch...OK...NEARLY TWO HOURS to get three people food. The waiter seemed to be part of a Quantum Leap experiment (one minute I was smoking meth and the next...POW! I found myself here! What is this white thing tied around my waist?!). He actually announced that "I am sorry the bread is taking soo long (dude), but the chef burned it. He is making some fresh bread for you now". I am not kidding.

The elk chop I had (once it arrived) was good, but when you have an hour for lunch, you can't take damn near two! And there were only 6 other diners...pathetic.

Tamales in the SFV?

As much as I know I am going to have to drive to East LA for the answer to this question, can anyone recommend a good location for tamales in the SFV? I live in Northridge and I do not want to have to drive 40 miles on a Friday evening to keep my 8-year old happy! :)

Have a great weekend and thanks in advance for any assistance!

Texas/Mexican Barbeque (Cow Heads)

Thanks Penquin!

Calcots in LA? (Grown or Planting Stock)

Thank you all for the great information!

Texas/Mexican Barbeque (Cow Heads)

I am looking for an LA area barbeque location for cow head barbeque, i.e., the traditional Tex-Mex barbequed cow heads....any help?

Calcots in LA? (Grown or Planting Stock)

Having falling in love with Bourdain's recent Spain episode, I am looking for a place to purchase Calcots. Separate from the finished product, I would love to find some root stock to grow my own calcots as well.

Any information is greatly appreciated fellow Chowhounds!!

Abattoir in LA or Ventura County?

I am looking for an abattoir in LA or Ventura County. I am hunting boar in Santa Barbara next weekend and need a butcher to cut it up. Hope someone can help (Chowhound has never let me down!!).

Rasta Ital (Food) in LA?

Going out on a limb here, but does anyone know of a Rasta (that is Ital) food outlet in Los Angeles? While LA is international and certainly has an endless amount Hispanic food outlets, I am hoping someone can enlighten me as to where to find Ital food---there has to be a Jamaicaan cooking somewhere in LA County!

Anyone tried Wat Thai in NoHo?

Has anyone tried the Wat Thai (Buddist Temple) Saturday food court? I heard it is back up starting this weekend and have always wanted to go.

Upscale Cuban in LA?

Any suggestions for a little upscale Cuban in LA (as opposed to small (but good) strip mall location)?

THANKS!

Dinner Suggestions for Hollywood?

Fellow Chowhounders: I have done Off Vine and Trastevere and Cafe des Artistes....what else would you recommend for a (relatively) affordable birthday dinner in the Hollywood area? I am looking for something new.

Separately, any suggestions for a good Russian restaurant in LA?

THANKS!

FIRST Time in Seattle

My wife and I are visiting Seattle for a four-day weekend in October. While I read the similar, recent post, what other advice would my fellow Chowhounds have for our visit?

We will definitely be trying Volterra (as per the other post), but would love further recommendations for:

-A good brewpub (or some pub serving NW beers);
-Lunch;
-Dinner---for an elegant "I love my wife" Saturday night;
-GREAT sushi and raw bar (area oysters)!

Lastly, I am not very familiar with the area (hence the trip), but what type of regional food should we NOT miss (i.e, trying steamed crabs when you are in my native Maryland)? For example, Geoduck clams?

Thank you in advance for helping me make this trip memorable!!! (If you need LA or Annapolis tips let me know).

Where can I buy a (raw) cow head in LA?

I would love to try Barbacoa de Cabeza and hope someone can provide me with some direction on where I can buy a cow head in LA...I believe that there are one or two slaughterhouses still in the area, but a google search didn't help.

If I can't find a head, can someone recommend a taqueria that serves Barbacoa de Cabeza?

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

David

How do you IN-N-OUT?

They should not be any more fatty than regular fries...but don't go fries light---they don't get quite as hard as the regular fries.

Donut Hole La Puente--point me in the right direction...

I have attached a photo here, for those who don't know what I am talking about.

Donut Hole La Puente--point me in the right direction...

The Donut Hole in LP is more of an experience in itself with the coffee and donuts your standard fare. Having said that, their coffee is very good and I prefer their sugar twist. The chocolate iced ring is too sweet for my taste....have fun!

Kansas City Barbeque in LA?

Smokin' Jacks has moved from the auto repair shop to a brand-new restaurant location at 220 N. San Fernando Blvd., Burbank, CA 91502, in the heart of Downtown Burbank, between Magnolia & Olive.
They are open Monday - Thursday 11am - 11pm, Friday & Saturday 11am - Midnight, Sunday 11am - 10pm. No reservations required.

Also, I am going to try the new KC BBQ shop on Lankershim today--I will let you know what I find!

Questions about Hard Cider

I am currently fermenting a gallon at home. I missed the apple cider and hard cider I grew up with in Danbury, CT.

Thankfully, LA residents can buy top-quality unpasteurized apple cider both in Julian (east of San Diego) and east of LA in San Bernardino County in Oak Glen. I drove up to Oak Glen recently. It was a little 909, but my kids loved the drive and picking apples and the cider is excellent!

I did not sterilize it, instead adding some White Labs English cider yeast. My gallon is currently fermenting and I can't wait to try in (in a year).
