Restaurant for out of town guests?
Kokkari it is -- and they had a table. Thanks all.
Restaurant for out of town guests?
Slanted Door is booked. Thinking of One Market, Piperade, Kokkari???
Restaurant for out of town guests?
I should add that our guests are very casual -- don't like dressing up -- and aren't really "foodies." So it shouldn't be stuffy.
Restaurant for out of town guests?
I need a restaurant idea for out of town guests -- one is a vegetarian, the other only eats fish. We are omniovores. I know that most restaurants will have 1 vegetarian entree, but looking for someplace with a few more options. Maybe tapas? Bonus points if it is in SOMA or near 101.
Lunch near the deYoung?
I'm coming into the city to see the Chihuly exhibit at the deYoung and wondered if there are any good places for lunch nearby? Or is the museum cafe the only game in town?
Beet Salad in San Francisco...
My mother-in-law makes a great one! Not of the beet and goat cheese variety, but more sliced beets in a very garlicky vinaigrette. Anyway, she's in town from NY, you wanna' come by?
Tadich Grill, the best lunch ever!
I too recently had a lovely lunch at Tadich. I was alone and easily got a seat at the bar. I ordered a cioppino and a glass of chardonnay. Service was perfectly fine. Cioppino was delicious and with the garlic bread that comes with it, more than I could finish. The chardonnary was delightful. All in all, a good start to a day of shopping and spa!
Leaving SFO over a layover...how much time should I afford?
Alan -- you may be correct in your time calculations, but the thing you're missing here is that there is absolutely no room for error. What if the BART breaks down? Or is delayed? What if the In-n-Out is incredibly backed up? It *may* work, but the OP will need to decide whether In-N-Out is worth the risk of missing his flight.
Piperade Review - LONG
Interesting that you posted this. We had dinner at Piperade Friday night and I was planning to post a review!
We had an 8 pm reservation. We were taken to our table immediately upon arrival. The restaurant was busy, but no one was waiting at the bar.
Our server never rushed us, as Kaffy reports. Indeed, the chef (we thought it was the chef as he was wearing a chef's jacket) came out to talk to us about the wine list and recommended a few choices. We were ordering by the glass, but no one seemed to be off-put that we didn't have a cocktail or a bottle.
We also had the calamari (which is delicious) and a tomato tartlett with balsamic vinegar -- divine. We then had the cod (the Friday special) and the lamp chops with gigante beans. Both were good, but the lamb was especially good -- a decent sized portion for lamb chops and cooked to medium rare perfection.
After dinner, we were asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu. We did, but my husband wanted to finish his wine first and we were never rushed by the waiter. We had a chocolate and hazelnut roche which was delicious. I would definitely go back.
Leaving SFO over a layover...how much time should I afford?
It was today -- a Monday.
My first In-N-Out Burger experience - questions
So, I made my first stop at In-N-Out Burger today and I'm confused. The menu was very limited -- burger, cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, fries and shakes. That's it. But I saw some people with items that were not on the menu -- chili cheese fries.
Are there other items that are only available if you are in the know? Specifically, I had a hankering for onion rings.
Also, it seemed like there was some lingo that regulars were using. Any insight?
Leaving SFO over a layover...how much time should I afford?
I just ate at the In-n-Out Burger at Millbrae. Granted, it wasn't 10:30 am, but it was 11:45 and the line was out the door. I waited a good 10-15 minutes after ordering for my burger. If you want to do this, I'd take a taxi (it isn't far). When you get there, you can decide whether it appears quicker to do drive-thru or inside. Either way, it's going to be tight.
Saturday SF Ferry Farmer's Market - What not to miss?
I still dream of the plate of Chilaques I had at the Farmer's Market. I could have sworn the stand was called "primavera" but that makes no sense. There is a smoked salmon stand nearby with absolutely delicious looking sandwiches.
There is a coffee stand on the far end (south, I guess?) that everyone waits in line for. I thought the coffee was fine...nothing special ... and the wait is interminable.
Lunch for 1 in Union Square
I'm treating myself to a day in the city tomorrow -- including an afternoon at the Red Door salon near Union Square. Any recs for a good place for lunch for 1? I'm thinking of the counter at Tadich, but am up for Asian, Italian, mediterranean, etc.
Waterfront Dining Ffld Cty CT?
FISH in Port Chester (Fox Island Seafood House) is another choice. the seafood is good and inventive, but I don't think the place is as good as Rowayton Seafood. Pretty view.
Longford's in Old Greenwich
They have been open a couple of weeks for sure. They are in that little strip shopping center with Mackenzie's tap room, across from the Tennis Center.
Red Cat vs. Spice Market vs. ???
Trying to come up with a place for 2 couples to dine during Memorial Day weekend. It should be good food, fun, somewhat trendy (but not so trendy that we can't get in) and preferably located near other bars, etc, where we can go afterwards. They went to Pastis last time they were in town. Any other ideas??
Longford's in Old Greenwich
Opened in the space that used to be the Baskin-Robbins near the train station? Anyone tried it? I wonder how they'll do so close to that new ice cream/candy store on Sound Beach called Darlene's.
Garden Catering -- Lower Fairfield
I don't really get the Garden Catering attraction. It must be me, though, because there's always a line. Everything in there is fried and the place doesn't look that clean (OG location).
The one thing I can vouch for is the fried chicken. Got a whole tray of it for a tailgate once and it was delish.
Help! Need recs for Friday night in Greenwich/Stamford
My choices would be Elm St. Oyster House, Barcelona (tapas -- lots of fun), Polpo, Mediterraneo, Avenida
Market review -- drinks & apps
Went to Market last night in Stamford for drinks and appetizers with some friends. We enjoyed it. I didn't get a chance to peruse the wine list carefully, but they seemed to have a number of wines by the glass.
The atmosphere is very sleek and modern seeming -- more a Manhattan-style place. I like that the windows/doors open up in the summer.
We had a delicious homemade gnocci with fresh peas, watercress and pea puree. We had nonna's meatballs. A little crock of about 5 very moist meatballs (they almost fell apart) in a very tasty tomato sauce. Comes with some grilled garlic bread. We also had the fried artichokes with a delicious lemony aioli. Finally, we had the school of tuna. It is tuna 4 ways -- carpaccio over a rice ball, sashimi style with a citrus sauce, tartar on a chip of some kind and searted with guacamole and pico. Good, but hard to share.
Lake George, NY
I think the best (and most interesting) restaurant we went to in Lake George was Pumpernickel's in Bolton Landing (north of Lake George village, near the Sagamore). It is an authentic German restaurant. The food was good and they have some unique cuckoo clocks.

Stamford Mall Anyone like the New Restaurants?
I've been and I welcome the opportunity for some casual eateries in the Tresser/Atlantic area for those working in the area (like me!).
I'm not a fan of P.F. Chang's. It's fine, but a little overpriced for Chinese food that is nothing special.
Cosi is ... Cosi. An easy place for a salad or sandwich. Had lunch at CPK today (3rd time). Pizzas are fine, salads are good.
Kona Grill has an extremely cheap happy hour but is quickly becoming the 20's hangout on Thurs nights. Don't say you weren't warned. I find the menu perplexing -- not sure what they want to be.
I like Mitchell's. The bar specials at happy hour are good (they make a delicious tequila gimlet with patron) and I've had 2 good meals there. Would definitely go back.
Haven't tried Capital Grille.
Potato Salad In or Near Stamford?
I think the only decent potato salad out there is at Stew Leonard's. They make it just like my nana did -- mayo, vinegar, onions, salt, pepper. It's just like homemade.
Family reunion lunch in Greenwich...
Polpo is a great pick. What about FISH (Fox Island Seafood House) in Port Chester? The food is good and it's on a lovely river, so it's a pretty view. I don't find it to be too loud so you will be able to catch up.
Special Occasion Seafood Restaurant on Sound
Another vote for Rowayton Seafood. It isn't on the sound, but on a river. It is still a beautiful location and reliably good food.
Another choice might be FISH in Port Chester, but for a special occasion I'd choose Rowayton Seafood over FISH.
Mother's Day brunch - Sono Brewhouse or 3 Bears?
Looks like Silvermine Tavern isn't serving brunch on Mother's Day. I won't go back to the Greenwich Hyatt on Mother's Day -- too much of a zoo. Would prefer a buffet. Needs to be somewhere I can take well-behaved preschoolers who are picky eaters (i.e., they need a children's menu like chicken fingers or grilled cheese). I was wondering which is better -- Sono Brewhouse or 3 Bears?
Upper East/Midtown East Pastry?
Well, there's William J. Greenburg -- pricey, but good.
Or there's Two Little Red Hens.
Looking for good dinner, but have small children
None of these places are *fabulous*, food-wise, but I think all are perfectly acceptable and would be fine for a child. All are in Greenwich:
Bella Nonna - red sauce Italian and pizza
Pomodoro - ditto
Boxcar Cantina - mexican; arrive early or you won't get a table
Thataway Cafe - salads, sandwiches, etc
City Limits Diner (Stamford) - upscale diner
