Kosher Mexican Cheese?
I know Eden makes refried beans with a hechsher, and I've seen other brands as well.
New Rochelle/Westchester
Yes. New Rochelle has an Eden Wok (typical kosher Chinese restaurant + sushi), Grill Point, and I think a milchig place. Sammy's New York Bagels is probably the best breakfast option.
Does a can of Sesame Tahini have to be refrigerated after opening?
I wouldn't keep anything in an opened can, as it can start to leach into the food, but I keep plastic jars of tahin in a cabinet for months at a time after opening without noticeable ill effects.
Rosa's pizza - Empire State Bldg.
My friend posted that the partners who owned it split up, and the remaining owner decided to make it non-kosher, but I haven't heard more than that.
Rosa's pizza - Empire State Bldg.
Rosa's Pizza is no longer under the OU; it's currently the top item on their Kosher Alerts page (http://www.oukosher.org/index.php/consumer/alerts), but there's no way to link to the announcement directly. A friend posted on FB that it's become entirely non-kosher, but I haven't seen confirmation of that elsewhere.
Eating kosher in Bogota, Colombia
It's been nearly two years since the original post - for all we know, the grocery store in question once had an extensive kosher section, but no longer stocks it.
Kosher in Greenwich, CT?
The closest options is probably Kosh, in Stamford (open until 10, http://www.itskosh.com/ ). As far as I know, there are no kosher restaurants in Greenwich at all, although various places will deliver there.
Barton's chocolate matzos
I wish Chowhound had a private messaging function. It'd make these things so much easier.
Times Square
I clearly remember a date in a midtown Colbeh in around June 2005. It was around the corner from Lord and Taylor, where I killed time while the guy was running late. Their New York location is described as their 'new Manhattan restaurant,' but it can't be very far from their previous location, if it's moved at all, because it's still around the corner from Lord and Taylor.
hotel water in israel [moved from Kosher]
The water, salads, etc. are safe for consumption. That said, some people have digestive problems on their first few days of drinking water with a very different mineral balance than what they're used to, including many American tourists in Israel.
kosher restaurant jezebel to open in nyc
My guess is that something like this has happened: In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a 'Jezebel' was an evil temptress, the same way yeshivish Jews today might call someone a 'Haman,' when they mean they're a Jew-hater, not that they're a Persian grand vizier during the Babylonian Exile. Over time, 'Jezebel' evolved into something like 'slut.' With the rise of sex-positive feminism in the nineties, there's been an effort to reclaim words like 'slut,' to say that women who like sex are not bad people to be shamed, and thus that 'slut' and similar words aren't negative terms. As such, synonyms for slut, like Jezebel, have come to mean 'sexy' and 'fun' in some circles, and Jezebel has lost its really negative Biblical overtones. (Witness the Gawker website of the same name, which sells itself as a very with-it, fun site for young women.) Probably someone Biblically ignorant said, ooh, a word for 'sexy' and 'fun' that's also Jewish and Bible-y! That must be an awesome name for my restaurant!
But yes, it makes me skeptical. Still hoping for the best!
Molten chocolate cake for Shabbos evening
Mimicreme is a cream replacement. I'm a big fan, but I don't use it when recipes call for milk, as it's much higher in fat and doesn't have the same chemical properties as milk. As I mentioned, almond or soy milks are much closer in protein/fat profile.
Bonito Flakes
Here's the page for their bonito flakes: http://www.edenfoods.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=29_55&products_id=109590 Note that below the description, there's a list of attributes of the product (low sodium, fat free, wheat free, etc.) For their kosher products, there's a little OK logo in that list, like here: http://www.edenfoods.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=29_60&products_id=107210 Sadly, the bonito flakes lack the OK.
Bonito Flakes
Are you sure Eden's bonito flakes are kosher? I haven't looked at them in a while, but I remember them being one of the few Eden products without a hechsher, and their website (which indicates which products are under the OK) doesn't say that they're kosher. I wish they were - I've looked on and off for hechshered bonito flakes for years.
Molten chocolate cake for Shabbos evening
I like Earth Balance as a butter replacement in baking, but make sure that if you have the salted variety, that you reduce the salt accordingly in your recipes.
Molten chocolate cake for Shabbos evening
Coffee rich is nasty. I generally go for almond or soy milks, which are much less artificial (and do not taste like chemicals), but which have a similar-enough protein content to milk that they replace it pretty well in baking.
I have never used a warming drawer, and can't speak to that.
Molten chocolate cake for Shabbos evening
I have done the lower-class, but still very popular, hot fudge pudding cake on the blech for Friday night, and it's also worked quite well: http://www.hersheys.com/recipes/recipe-details.aspx?id=4761
Substitution for Parmesan in pestos
Ditto. I make cheese-free basil/olive oil/nut sauces all the time, and they're really good.
booking with "kosher holidays"
Unfortunately, the moderators here at Chowhound thoroughly squelch any discussion of the reliability of hechsherim. You can ask about the quality of the food, you can ask who provides a certification, you can discuss the service, etc., but no discussions of the pluses and minuses of various hechshers.
Restaurant Wedding (ceremony + reception) nyc or brookyln
Agreed.
Abigael's also has a party space, but might be more expensive than your budget.
Restaurant Wedding (ceremony + reception) nyc or brookyln
Acquaintances did something like this at Colbeh, but that was about six years ago, and I don't know what they paid. They were paying for their own wedding and were very price conscious.
Is 16 Handles (153 2nd ave.) kosher?
Is it Jewish owned? I have no idea, but if it isn't, there's no halachic reason for it to close on Shabbos. There are many, many dairy, chain-type places out there that aren't Jewish owned and are open seven days a week - think kosher Dunkin Donuts, other ice cream shops, etc.
Philly - Max & David's Closes - Food Truck still coming to 34th & Walnut
I'm sorry to hear it. I very much enjoyed my one visit there (I'm not a Philadelphian.) I suppose this answers the question of whether Citron and Rose would kill Max & David's.
Is 16 Handles (153 2nd ave.) kosher?
According to their website, yes, under the supervision of National Kosher Supervision (Rabbi Aaron Mehlman). http://16handles.com/store/ues.php
Tzimmes with Flanken recipe
Meat Tzimmes:
2 1/2 to 3 lb brisket or other stew meat, cubed (flanken are great)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus more as needed
5 large carrots (the kind they sell loose, rather than the wimpy ones sold in 1-2 pound bags)
3 medium sweet potatoes
5 medium white boiling potatoes, optional (leave out if freezing - they get mealy)
1/2 cup brown sugar
boiling water to cover
1 medium onion, x-ed on top
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons flour (for year-round; if making for Passover, I'd sub in matzah cake meal, or perhaps potato starch, although to me, this is a fall recipe, for Rosh Hashana and/or Sukkot)
Brown meat on all sides in a little oil without crowding it; you will probably need to do this in batches.
Peel and chunk the potatoes and carrots. Add to browned meat and cover with boiling water; add the onion, brown sugar, and salt. Shake during cooking, but don't stir, so as not to break down the sweet potatoes too much. Cover and cook until everything is tender, and meat is cooked through, about one hour.
Preheat the oven to 350.
For the enbrein (aka roux), heat 2 tablespoons oil on medium, then brown flour/matza cake meal. When browned, add a bit of tzimmes liquid and stir well. Add the whole thing back into the tzimmes.
Transfer to an oven-safe vessel if necessary (I do the whole thing in a Dutch oven, so no transferring necessary). Bake at 350 until the top is browned, about 30 minutes.
This is better after it's sat in the fridge for a day or two. If you want to freeze it, leave out the white potatoes as mentioned above. To add them later, peel and cube them (smaller than the big chunks you made for the main recipe), and cook them with a bit of water in a covered dish in the microwave until they're about 1/2 to 2/3 done. Stir them into the defrosted tzimmes, and heat until tzimmes is bubbly and the potatoes are cooked through.
From Eda K., the mother of a good family friend, and a true Southern Jewish lady. I always think of her when I make this - may she rest in peace.
Cumin substitute for Pesach
Many (though not all) Ashkenazim hold that cumin is kitniyos, so while you can find it for Pesach, not everybody will use it.
What are the other seasonings and flavors in your quinoa salad?
Can't find Heinz Red Wine vinegar for Pesach
I also have K-for-P Breakstone's sour cream and unsalted butter, for what it's worth.
Can't find Heinz Red Wine vinegar for Pesach
I have some K-for-P Breakstone cottage cheese sitting in my fridge right now, purchased last week in a Manhattan grocery store. Low fat large curd.
