Straight dish on the food truck scene?
I thought of an even better CoolHaus combo, which was brown butter bacon ice cream (tastes like butterschotch with salty bits) and snickerdoodles or gingersnaps, can't remember
Food Trucks at Diamond Bar HS Sat 2/11
I'm going to head over to check it out and support the HS. A little food truck fun for those of us in the hinterlands.
Tix are $2, $1 for students and under 5 yo free. The website lists SweetE's, Don Chow's tacos, the NomNom truck and Jogasaki sushi burrito. The flyer says Slummin' Gourmet and Slammin' Sliders as well.

Straight dish on the food truck scene?
I havent' had a huge amount of exposure so I'm not at all jaded and burnt out on food trucks in LA. If you've never encountered them, I think you'll have a fun time. When you are visiting and having fun, you won't care as much if something is a dollar or 2 more, than if you have to face that everyday.
Once of the most fun places to encounter them is the monthly downtown LA Artwalk, which is a huge scene in itself. 2nd Thursday of every month.
I like Kogi korean tacos immensely
India Jones, esp lamb frankies
mango tango gelato is excellent
Big Mista BBQ, the sides were really good
Lomo Arigato - peruvian japanese fusion with great wok smoked fried rice
coolhause ice cream sandwiches are pure fun with crazy flavors (guiness ice cream with red velvet cookies anyone?)
frysmith and Ludo chicken were okay for me
Flying Pig - I only had a sample of the pork belly sandwich, but it was so good and I was mad at myself when I picked something else.
your favs in rowland heights
I am nearby often but just starting to explore it. BCD Tofu House is in Yes Plaza on Fullerton Rd/Colima. I tried it once and loved it. Coconut Bay is there too, I've never tried it but it is crowded, rowdy and open late. A lady told me she likes the Ramen House on the 2nd floor in the little mini mall across the street before you cross Colima.
Diamond Plaza, just off the freeway used to have a 101 Noodle Express with the most outragrous good beef rolls in the mini mall, but the mini mall is closed. Shoot have to go to Alhambra//MP.
That's it to date. I would like other recco's too, and Taiwanese is fine with me, what's the problem?
BCD for other than Soon Dofu - Rowland Heights
I have had the soon dofu soup/stew at BCD and am craving it. But my father will rather have some grilled meat. What else is good? Bulgoki? Also what is the etiquette for sharing? I suppose we can share each other's, But 2 orders are way too much food for us, sharing a combo would work better. Is it really bad to share? or take extra food to go? Last visit I stuffed myself sick because I couldn't leave it on the table. Too delicious.
Best store-bought kim chi and where to find it in LA
Oh thanks for the pic. Last time I was a H-mart they only had large jars, but again a nice customer asked me if I needed help when I was baffled looking. So nice! I really like this particular cabbage kimchi. I have had many but never tracked them or bought them jarred, just fresh. I had BCD recently in their restaurant, but didn't like it as much (still good!) There is something distinctive about each flavor and ingredient in Ocinet.
I am going to make a soup with the rest of my jar if they get the

I have recently loved this brand a lady reccomended to me by a lady in the H-Mart in Diamond Bar. She said it is a little salty. I just love the way the giner comes through. No added msg.

Is there a huge Asian market in Pomona?
Let me correct myself-- the market I'm talking about is Haman Market World. It is large with a big selection of goods and good prices on bottled condiments. I've bought premium IQF black pork belly on special this week for $2.99lb.
I ate a plate of dumplings at the little counter here this week. 6 King dumplings for $6.00. Way too many for one person. Served with chopped fresh jalapeno and a side of pickled turnip. They were nice and jucy. (I'd rather eat Chinese dumplings, now to find those near.) I'd eat with someone else and split this and another dish or get a combo. They had other items like black bean noodles, marinated meat, soups. I wish they had told me there was 'help yourself tea', it was located near the cash register. All I saw and drank was water from a cooler near me. So let's not pretend there's any service here. I'd rather go over to Spicy Kimchee and have a friendly place to eat.
There is also a soup place on the other side next to a little bakery, where you can get soon dofu and other soups.
The Super H Mart is on Diamond Bar Blvd just a couple of miles South of Grand. I just went last week. Very nice, the whole foods of Asian Grocers to me. But kind of expensive for some things. and most of the meats are prepacked in large quantity so it is not possible for me to buy ,say 2 lb of ground pork or 2 lb of pork belly ($5lb this week.) No need for that quantity at once, and no room in the freezer right now. The seafood selection is fantastic.
I did get takeout from the Kimbap Factory in the Food Court area (there was an awesome looking soup place too.) I picked the bbq beef, but they also had fish cake, cheese, tuna. It was $5.25 for 10 oz, a generous quantity and very good. What I really went crazy over, however, were the rice balls mixed iwth sesame seeds and stuffed with kim chee. The counter lady said if I was taking them home, to heat in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds and eat it with the sesame leaf they were sitting on. Delicious. Good cold too. they are a bit fragile, so don't let them get squashed if they are in the same bag as the sushi. For $3.50 these are a great treat.
best restaurant with view of downtown skyscrapes?
A thread from 2007 revived? Too bad OP didn't report back. Just to say, as BSW6490, suggests Takami Susi and Robata Restaurant on the 21st floor has a patio with a Lounge and some dinner seating too. It has plexiglass so you don't fall over the edge of the wallless side of the building. It's pretty cool and there's a view down over the pool at the Standard Hotel.
The happy hour is good with the bar menu 1/2 price M-F 4 to 7 and Sat/Sun 5 to 7.
Click on the chow link to see a pic of the lounge.Don't know why it won't come up like the others.

Seriously, when does Pann's have corned beef hash??
That sounds delicious AAQjr. Right up my alley too. If you find such a creation, be sure to make a new post about it.
Owen's Bistro in Chino - Fine Dining in Inland Empire
Yes we so enjoyed it. I just read your notes on another thread. We had a warm night and the patio was airy and comfortable. The brick and iron work are charming and the fountain outside added atmosphere. They have heat lamps if you wanted, and they have one end blocked from wind if needed. The inside looked a little small and plain/industrial in comparison. I'd say much of our enjoyment came from the feeling of a relaxing 2 hours on the patio. We made an early 5:30 reservation so we got the most from it.
Denise answered a lot of questions we had. She said that the salmon served on the hot rock is so popular that they can't take it off the menu and I can see why. It is a showpiece and 3 people of our party of 5 ordered it. One said it was rare on the parts that hung over the rock (it is intended to be rare) so she moved it up onto the rock and cooked it to her liking. I think that's kind of cool. It is served with those delicious crisp potato slices and salad greens that wilt a bit over the top AND bacon dressing. They no longer had the pork shoulder with pepperoni sauce. They had pork loin with cherry sauce. There was Halibut and I had the Duck Confit with white beans. They haven't updated the online menu yet, but you can keep an eye on the menu page:
http://www.owensbistro.com/menu.html
I started with a salad that had crisped pork belly cubes and dried cherries. It was ruined by a weird sweet vanilla yogurt dressing that I unfortunately mixed in well before tasting. I'd ask for a balsalmic viniagrette (they had one on hand) next time and it would be perfect. They are very nice about accomodating allergies (one of us had egg alergy and doesn't like pork so no bacon dressing) and changing out for taste preferences, which included cobbling up a dessert on the fly for our egg allergic.
If the Beet Soup is any indication, the chef really knows how to make wonderful soups. I saw raves elsewhere for his pureed cauliflower soup.
I had the duck confit with white bean ragout. It was nice but not really up my alley. I kind of knew that, but decided to go for it and be open minded. It was good if a little salty. The beans had complex flavors. The man at the table had the Filet Mignon (requires a $ supplement as does the New York with blue cheese sauce), which was tender but a bit over the medium rare ordered, so I might ask for rare if I got this. It came with green beans and pureed potatoes with sauce.
I had a chilled chocolate s'mores dish--I think he called it panna cotta, but it wasn't that. It was milk chocolate ganache (my guess) sprinkled with graham cracker crumbs (wish it had more of those) topped with a bruleed marshmallow. I was only going to have a bite or two but I ate it all. One person had the creme brulee and wouldn't share. Another had cheesecake with berries and it was gone in a moment so I didn't get a taste.I should mention that all of the dinnerwase and presentation was creative and handsome.
I didn't get a look at the wine list but one they have Dale Bros beers and one had a Little Yellow Pils. 3 of use had glass of wine (paring can be had for $20) selected by Denise at our request. I didn't even ask what I had, I was just relaxed about everythinag, but I enjoyed it. One had a reisling with the beet soup and another a very interesting Chard with the salmon.
Owen's is terifficly well priced for a 3 course meal of this quality. At that price you can take chances with your ordering-- we'll be back to explore more. We also plan to try the Tuesday night pasta dinner, various pastas, some homemade, with assorted sauces, soup or salad and dessert choice for $16. There are reasonably priced addon's like meatballs, chicken parm etc. They seat at 5:30, 6:00 and 6:30.
Owen's is worth a bit of a drive and I hope the surrounding communities will support it. I prefer it to several places in Clarement .
Owen's Bistro in Chino - Fine Dining in Inland Empire
I'm not sure I can do it justice now. But I had a great birthday dinner tonight at Owen's Bistro in downtown Chino. I realy appreciate that Chino Wayne has mentioned this place over a coulple of years, I can't be more regretful that I didn't try it before.
For $25 on Thursday, you are offered a 3 course meal, with several choices in each course. I think it is $30 on Fri and Sat. We had the brand new fall menu, so maybe there were kinks to work out.
The puree of beet soup was fantastic.
Roasted brussel sprouts are off the hook, if not too salty
The Camping Salmon served on a hot rock was the crowd fav
I had some chocolate flan I couldn't stop eating,
The patio was pretty , the hostess was delightfull and so accomodating. She was wonderful from her stories to her choice of wine by the glass. All of us will come back.

Killer Shrimp will return!
I liked it but the last couple of years the shrimp quality was not up to par. Sauce still good.
What are your favorite dives and cheap eats WORTH THE DRIVE?
Agree, those donuts are cramed with fine fresh strawberries from the field next door, in a light handmade glaze. They are huge and delicious and unique.
Diamond Plaza Food Court (Plaza Walk) Closed?
I stopped by today and there were no restaurants open. The doors were opened for the phone shop. The pastry shop in front was dismanteled. The signage for any food count places are gone. The only ones that looked like a possible were 101 Noodle Express and the Chinese place on the far side, but iffy. All closed today at 3PM.
I really wanted the beef rolls at 101 Noodle Express.

non-diastatic malt powder?
I ordererd mine (for Bagels) from KA. A pound isn't too much to buy if you will be making them from time to time. I'd think Rainbow Foods would have it.
Grey Corned Beef?
The only time I've had the kind without potassium nitrate was from a specialty store or butcher--a premium priced artisnal product, and not in this area. Try specialty stores and butcher's, even Whole Foods is a good bet worth checking. Or, you could make your own.

Trucks That Suck
The only real disappointment I've had was a Cuban Truck I can't remember the name of, but I tried it out at the last LA Art Walk. The guys ahead of us were salivating over ordering something--meatballs, I think. Their most famous dish. But they were sold out. We order a Cuban Sandwich and it was just tasteless and dull. I split it and still didn't want to finish my half. In the bin it went.
The trucks are very convenient at the art walk, except when there is a big line.
The lamb frankie at India Jones is very good.
The cheese grits and greens combo at Barbie Q are great.
I was happy with my little plate of sushi balls at fishlips and thought good value.
I was underwhelmed with the chicken balls at Ludo's truck. Nothing wrong with them, nice and crunchy, but after all the talk I expected to be happier with it. My companion thought they were nothing special at all, though I liked a bit more than that--the line also makes for less happy camper.
Weekend in Claremont - Ideas?
Not sure if I have anything original to add. I do like Viva Madrid, but it is small and can get very crowded--go early or late perhaps. I don't think they take reservations.
Walters is solid, large menu, a couple of Afgan things with terrific green cilantro sauce on the side, but I think of it for brunch or luch of big salads. My Aunt eats breakfast once a week at The Village Grille.
The Back Abby is a fun pub for beer drinking and a Belgian Fries with dipping sauces. I've aslo have the salumi platter. I haven't had the pricy burgers, but they sure look good. It can get crowded too. The little patio has heaters and they will give you lap blankets too.
In the same area is Le Pan Quotidian, interesting sandwiches and salads, very nice menu, but I haven't tried it.
The outdoor lounge at Casa 425 is very elegant and nice and I've heard music there too. I've been to see music at Hip Kitty, which is a fondue place. I've only had the cheese platter, though. The Press is good for drinks and live music. They have food but I only tried so so appetizers. Bottles of wine are 1/2 off on Wed.
Have some frozen yogurt at Kiwiberry if you don't have one of those or pinkberry near you.
I really love Sanamluang, on Indian Hill below the freeway at San Bernardino. It is high quality, low priced, and the pad thai noodles are so silky. I also like the fish cake appetizer. The duck noodle soup, the general's soup, salads, especially the spicy beef salad (really hot but they will tone it down for you.)

The Original Shrimp House Arcadia
I'd love to send a coupon to my Uncle, but I can't find them listed on restaruant.com --is it gone?
The Original Shrimp House Arcadia
My aunt and uncle used to go the the Original Shrimp House in Claremont for years. When it closed they didn't know about the other locations. I heard about the El Monte one and we went over one day. The thing to get are the fried Jumbo Shrimp dinner with clam chowder. I did see a cocktail of shrimp and avocado and salsa that looked great but I didn't try. It was fun in a old school way and I went once or twice with the family but that closed pretty quickly once I'd found it here on chowhound. Uncle was bummed out until he found the Arcadia one. They go regularly but I just went once. I was kina over it by the 3rd visit or maybe they weren't as good as El Monte. The shrimp seemed not as good, the sides aren't anything special.
I like Seafare Inn in Whittier much better for old school. I'm trying to get my Uncle to try it since they have fried shrimp. What I like here is the really nice selection of seafood, some specials you wouldn't expect like Monkfish, Lake Superior whitefish and halibut cheeks. And they have great sides, the coleslaw (non mayo) is really special and I'm not usually a fan. I've only been once, read about it here, but all the seafood was perfectly cooked. Including an Idaho rainbow trout, the fried seafood platter (shrimp was best part), broiled scallops, mahi mahi with mango salsa.

OH NO you didn't! TEll me you didn't tell someone from NC to get BBQ here.
Chinese or dumplings between Diamond Bar and Hacienda Heights?
Unfortunately the time got away from us after daughter was ready we didn't arrive until about 10PM to Diamond Plaza off Fullerton Road. We were going for the Beef Rolls at 101 and possibly the dumplings at Suit Ur Buds, but everything there was closing except the tea house, Beer Station and the fancy looking Chinese seafood place upstairs (Capitol something?) So daughter wanted to be dropped off and I came back to try to find some simple noodle joint or something. I saw Yes Plaza and thought I could eat something at the bar at Banana Bay, but it was so crushed with people. I could have gone to the Korean Tofu House, but I've only been to one once and wasn't sure what I'd get. Then I tried Nogales exit and only saw the busy Maxim Cafe, wasn't sure what it was so didn't go. I looked it up and it is a HK type homey cafe. Then as I was about to get on the freeway, I saw Banana Station just below the freeway and went in and had a big bowl of Tom Yum soup with shrimp, fish balls, pork, beef and liver. It was pretty good. The service was very friendly and nice. I was so tired and hungry I almost ate fast food and glad I didn't.
I'm going to give it another shot today. I have to take someone from Diamond Bar to USC very early today and drop them at 5:30AM. Then get them later that day. I could have breakfast perhaps in Alhambra or Montery Park if I can figure out a place. I only know ABC Cafe is open 24 hours. Then I may try 101 Noodle Express on my way in later. Can't find the hours.

Singapore Style Fried Rice Noodle (星洲炒米粉) ... the most bastardized dish in all of SGV?
I have eaten this dish many times in San Francisco at restaurants frequented by office workers on Kearney Street between Downtown and Chinatown. I first had it about 30 years ago. In LA I haven't ordered it except at ABC Cafe on Garfield in Montery Park, open 24 hours. Had it twice and it was the curry powder based fried 'rice noodles' that I am familiar with, with shrimp and pork and bean sprouts. It is comfort food to me.
