Why do foodies like the McD's Filet o' Fish?

Haha. I just looked up the article. My coworker started talking about it a few minutes ago and we had a conversation. He may have indeed read it.

Why do foodies like the McD's Filet o' Fish?

I've noticed a strange amount of foodies like/love/tolerate the Filet o' Fish? I even include myself.

What's up with this? Is just the most viable McD's option?

Just curious.

Help: Melisse or Hatfields?

Dear Awesome Chowhound Hive Mind,

If it was between the two, would you opt the full tasting Menu at Hatfields (I've never been) OR the full Carte Blanche Tasting Menu at Melisse (have been a few times and liked very, very much but always had the 5 course).

So the basic question here: is it worth it to try Hatfields out or would it be more worth to go back and get the full awesome experience at Melisse?

Many Thanks

Where to buy chocolate/candy molds in Los Angeles?

hello all.

I'm looking for a store where I can buy chocolate molds (preferably the flexible kind). I've checked at "regular" places like Crate+Barrel and sur la table, but they only have larger brownie sized molds. I'm looking for something in the more traditional small chocolate size, and perferablly without a distinct shape, plain circles and square shaped is perfect.. All purpose candy molds may be just as good. If anyone would know where I could purchase some that would be fantastic.

I know there are some options online, but I'd preferably want to see them in person and time is sort of the essence. Many, many, many thanks!

Lobster Roe

I'm going to make a Coral Oil. Basically just blending it with canola oil to make a nice bright red base for a lobster dish. It's a thomas Keller move.

How is Morimoto?

I'm going there in a few weeks while in NYC. I'm not a food network worshipper, but I enjoy his fearlessness when it comes to approach. I'm probably going to do a tasting menu, but we'll see. Any thoughts are much appreciated, Thanks!

Where to buy Foie Gras?

Hey all,

I've eaten Fois Gras to some varying extent, but I'm going to make some first attempts at cooking/preparation. I was wondering where a good place in LA was to buy some fresh fois gras. My plans are simple: searing medallion sized pieces for 8 people. So any recommendations for where to buy? Should I go with duck or goose?

I live in Hollywood and willing to travel.

Thanks!

Anyone know the name of wine bar with...?

Hi all,

I have only heard about this place, but it's kind of wine bar where you pay money to put points on a card and you go around trying wines from the bin? I'm having serious amnesia about the name of the place.

If anyone's been is it good? Other similar wine bar recommendations?

Thank you!

Il Cielo or The Little Door for a romantic dinner?

Definitely the little door. Il Cielo is romantic, but the little door has better food. have you made a reservation yet though? I imagine both are already booked solid.

I need seared scallops- who has the best?

Providence always has my favorite scallops, all with different preparations. I'm not sure if they're in the rotation on the menu right now since it changes daily, but I believe they are on the tasting menu as of the menu. It may be a situation where you'd have to call to find out that day.

AOC Saturday Night

Went there for the first time last week. Everything was pretty good. They push the dates pamesan and bacon, but mostly because they're great. There's an excellent soft sheep's milk cheese and both the market fish and lamb dishes were also good. Enjoy!

Sona v. Providence

Can't speak for sona yet, but...

Providence's tasting menu is sublime. Michael reminds me of the great joel robuchon in some ways. At least in terms of aim for subtlety. It starts out lots of sharp and refreshing flavors he mixes with oysters and flavorful small fish. Then he opens up to broader, more savory flavors. My favorite dish was a seared day boat scallop with fois gras ravoli, fava bean pate, and summer truffles. It was the most amazing single dish I've ever had. His desserts are not exactly bombastic, but quite refined. The choice of fine cheeses was clearly top notch, someone knew what they were doing (sadly some "5 star" restaurants don't know thier fine cheeses). And definitely go for the wine pairings.

Best of all? It's not overpriced.

Best Tasting Menu in LA?

My mom is coming to town and I want to find a top-quality tasting menu so I can take her out.

I've done a few in the past, and my abosolute favorite is Providence. It was unbelievable and I'd take her there in a heartbeat, but I like to save the visits to that restaurant for my fiance, cause she's a what do you call it? pescatarian? I always forget the name. whatever it is, she only eats fish.

So i was thinking of branching out w/ something a little more wide ranging, but really any thing you all love is welcome suggestion.

Thanks!

Upscale Vegetarian?

Real Food Daily isn't quite as upscale as you may be looking for, but It beats Inn of the Seventh Ray in terms food quality any day. But the place is a celeb hangout and is certainly a lot a nicer than most of the good hole in the wall asian vegetarian restaurants you find. I recommend it highly.
