Why a TV in every restaurant?
is UFC really any more violent than the NFL? and even if it is, is violence in the form of a sport really that terrible?
I mean, don't let your kids watch if you want but then again don't go telling someone else what to let their kids watch.
ice cubes made from stone - do these work?
for such a slight difference in outcomes, it seems a silly endeavor. That said, the dilution you speak of as it pertains to ice, is actually a desired thing! Water opens spirits up and allows you past the burn of Ethyl alcohol so you can taste all the delicious flavors you are looking for.
ice cubes made from stone - do these work?
" the ice cube always starts at 32 degrees F or 0 degrees C"
what makes you think once Ice freezes that it STOPS decreasing in temperature?
Ice continues to drop in temperature just like any other form of matter, until we get to absolute zero(or as close as possible).
Ice machines such as Kold Draft churn out large cubes that are at or about -40F and require a much different approach to cocktail making than standard ice machines(which tend to make ice at or about 0F.)
Short list of MUSTs in Portland
Your list and everyone else's additions look great.
For sure don't miss Apizza, Wafu, Bent Brick or St. Jack.
oh and, Voodoo Donuts.....*sigh*.....go if the marketing has beaten you and all, but don't say no one warned you!;-)
Er Guotou
Er Gautou is a type of Baijou, correct? I do know that there is a single Baijou available now in Oregon, but I cannot for the life of me remember the name. They had to call it Sorghum Vodka because the FDA does not recognize Baijou as a category(much like Cachaca).

Birthday Dinner for Boyfriend! Halp!
I agree with every single one of Jill-O's recommendations, but one of them jumps out for "Foodies" more than the others.....Metrovino. From the food to the wine to the cocktails, it's the whole package. Go. Thank us later! :-)
Private Dining Room Suggestion for 8
El Gaucho totally has a private room? are they telling you it's not available when you want or for the number of guests you have?

Japanese ramen noodle soup
respond to a 5+ year old post? sure, why not!?
best Ramen in PDX right now is Wafu, Shigezo and a three way tie for third between Mirakutei, Miho and Yuzu.
there, go forth and eat.

Tipping - How do you feel about tip jars?
so if your "server" goes against their employers wishes and gives you a bigger portion(there by giving away something that doesn't belong to them), that is worthy of a (bigger)tip? do you routinely reward theft?
Apizza Scholls vs sizzle pie
and Apizza is not bitterly charred. charred yes, but bitter balances the malt(bitter balances sweet, right?) and the yeast is punched up to remind you that it's actually bread....real bread!
I bring up the bread point because pizza is simply flavored flat bread. once you start piling on 384, 443, 232 toppings, you lose the intrinsic beauty of the dish.
also, like I said, if Sizzle Pie is what blows your hair back, have at it. I am only taking issue with the comparison of the two. it's much like comparing a Kia and a Bentley. yeah, sure they are both cars, but the comparisons should really stop there lest we start to sound ridiculous. If you want to compare Apizza with somewere try Ken's Artisan, Nostrana, Pyro, WyEast.

Apizza Scholls vs sizzle pie
this thread seems like something out of 1997. Please keep hating on Apizza Scholls, it just makes it easier to get into a place that is not making Papa Murphy's style pizza and charging $25/pie.
Seriously, Sizzle pie is horrendous. limp crust that has ZERO flavor, toppings that are incongruous, a clientele that is as abysmal as their juke box, prices to match even the rarest of the rare pizza joints....I am very thinly restraining my disdain for the notion of even attemping, no matter how tenuous, of equating Apizza Scholls with M.F.ing Sizzle Pie. Blasphemy.

best beer options
Apex, Horse Brass, Coalition brewing, Breakside brewing, Upright brewing, Migration, Bazi bier brasserie, Cascade barrel room, Baileys Taproom, Deschutes Brewpub, Burnside Brewing....
also, if you are staying on/near Hawthorne, you will be fairly close to a contender for the best pizza in America(yes, the entire country)! they have an excellent beer list(it_is_Portland after all) and should not be missed. Apizza Scholls is the name.....go. trust me.

Hidden Gems in Beer World
Upright Brewing, Breakside, Coalition, Grain & Gristle(for a meal+beer), Spints Alehouse, Bazi(Belgian beers, spendy and service lacks but some super obscure beers),
terrible restaurant names
uhhh, YES! it's a burger!?
that said, if it were named "DietBurger" i'd walk around it like a pestilence ridden beggar asking me to pay his childs tuition outside a KFC!
New Trend in Tipping?
you are an anomaly. That is to say, the risk/reward here is your 2% on the upside versus the 10%+ on the downside(the guy that you don't autograt that tips 10% or less). There just aren't enough people tipping 30% to make up for the truly lousy people. Trust me, If I could autograt every single person through the door, I would. It also helps I guess that our Autograt is 21%.....;-)
Bartender and Server tip income in expensive and busy venues
I am a bartender living in Portland, OR. I would say my wages are fairly average(some much less, some much more....). weekday shift I walk with about $100-120 in tips+tipout from servers, and $175-$225+tipout on fri/sat. I work at an upscale italian restaurant in the downtown core. I also make $10/hr in wage.
I used to work in nightclubs here and in Phoenix and made double or triple that fairly easily. That said, I would never step foot behind a club bar ever again. Nothing is worth the crush of stupid frat boys.....NOTHING!
Best Pizza in Portland
re:Pyro: of course. also good is WyEast. also a cart, a little more $ but a much larger pizza.
back to Apizza for a second.....if it's been a while since you have been, go back and try their new house made Canadian bacon! I highly recommend it(although not on the Pig & Pineapple pizza that is on the menu.....fruit on pizza is an abomination, and gets treated as nuclear waste.). have it added to a Margarita!
Best Pizza in Portland
good to see someone get it right re: Apizza.
no one else in town is even playing the same game!? In fact, there are only a couple other places in the entire country that are worthy of mentioning in the same sentence with Apizza Scholls....and they are Pizzeria Bianco, Uno Napalitano, Sally's.
Where to take a crowd?
Irving Street Kitchen has a back room that would/could accommodate your needs.
If places like Henry's and 50 Plates are on your radar(which, quality-wise, I wouldn't include) then I wouldn't overlook places like Red Star Tavern, Pazzo, or The Orignal even though they are attached to hotels.

Why is Foodie a nasty term?
"but more often than not people like her are the rule not the exception."
well, it kinda of would have to be more often than not to be a rule right?;-)
anyways, the thrust of what you are saying is pretty much what I think. Although I may have to downgrade how many people are like your SIL, it doesn't take very many to seem like a majority. I apply the 90/10 rule to "Foodie"......10% of people that use the term for self description make the other 90% look bad. Such is life.
Beast or Castagna?
Castagna. easy pick.
also, I'm sure you know this, but please oh please, which ever you decide, make sure you call as soon as you know and cancel the reservation at the establishment that you will not be going to.

BYOB and Liability
legally, perhaps.
morally, not so fast!....personally I ascribe to personal responsibility, so barring someone force feeding you Chianti all night, that guilt lies on you and you alone, buster!
morals: the idea that everyone else should behave a certain way.....your way.
Dinner in Portland
Metrovino, Beaker&Flask, Apizza Scholls.
all don't miss, for their own reasons.
Metro is the finest that fine dining gets in this town. doing really wonderful things, both ingredient and presentation/preparation wise.
Beaker is quintessential Portland! spectacular food with great ingredients and simple. Not boring simple but the chef knows how to let ingredients sing! the bar might be the best cocktails of any restaurant in town(places like Teardrop are better, but are pure cocktail lounges).
Apizza is the best pizza you will find. easily top 3 pizzas in the country(IMHO it's top 2). don't miss it.

Shochu?
Shochu is at liquor stores only.
that being said, I can tell you that 10th ave. liquor in downtown carries a few nice ones(thanks to my haranguing) as does Pearl Specialties.
The problem is importation. Between the OLCC perpetually dragging their feet on listing niche market items, low sales, and high import prices....Shochu is far and few between to be purchased retail.
The best selection for a restaurant is Ping.
good luck
Funniest Thing a Server Said to You
I think I would revise that to say "...best when consumed by the pair!"
Funniest Thing a Server Said to You
yep. 80/20 sprite and coke with a couple dashes of Angostura bitters. It's hard to tell the difference between that and say Seagram's Ginger Ale.
now, whether commercial Ginger Ales are any good, that's a different story.....:-)
