Olivia's - Austin Chowhound Style

Hi.
I'm originally from NYC and have been living in France for 17 yrs. I moved here a year ago and everyone has made suggestions on where to eat. and I have gone from one disappointment to the next. Luckily I am married to a chef so food at home is great but we love going out. I'm interested in your suggestions as you seem as underwhelmed as I am (no snobbism intended either). Thanks

Help for lunch today.

Hello all,

I am looking for ideas to take my friend from San francisco out to lunch today. I was thinking south congress or second street district so we could walk around a little after but I'm open. Atmosphere is a plus but food is most important. I'm at a loss, having moved here not to long ago myself, so thanks.

cooking for him for the first time..

well.. I can cook pretty much anything. He likes anything but something more hearty and homey (whatever that means)..Probably more meat than fish..I don't really have a budget.. We have known eachother forever..so it's not like I need to tone it down,,I just have never cooked for him ;)

Capital Brasserie

Again, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm very sorry to say most brasseries in France are not chowhound experiences. I wish I could keep up the myth but I can not tell a lie.

Capital Brasserie

I'm sorry I meant it was good. Not the best mussels EVER etc.. But certainly very good and very fresh. In sum, though I agree it was not very clear, I meant simple, fresh, good, therefore honest (in french when we say something is 'honnete' it means we do not feel taken advantage of and are satisfied. Again, I would recommend it.

Capital Brasserie

I went to Capitol about 2 weeks ago. I had oysters and a ceasar, my son had steak frites and charcuterie and hubby had mussels and a salad, and my mom had some sort of pasta (can't remember what). Anyhoo, the service was pleasant, the food was good. Capitol is not a 'chowhound' experience, but it is honest and fresh and I would recommend it. I live in France and only wish all our brasseries were so good.

One Star Prices on New Year's Eve?

willing to drive to normandy for one night at the chateau de miromesnil? They have rooms and the menu is fabulous (prepared by a very talented chef)wine and champagne included and talented musicians for 150 euros. They have a web site and it's the birth place of guy de maupassant (the original chowhound!)

Cannelés/canelés - tips and tricks about making them

copper tin molds are a MUST, no silicone, no holes, no need for the best rhum, a little vanilla and certainly no bitter almonds. There you go for the rest there is a little trial and error involved.

Paris on a REAL budget

Great inexpensive Alsatian is l'alsaco, rue condorcet 9th. It's out of the way, neighborhood type place. small, noisy. and the owner (Klaus) is PRESENT!!very present! but he has the finest selection of wines alcohols, cheeses and meats for small producers in Alsace all at very reasonable prices and the choucroute is huge and cheap. And for what it's worth I've seen Patricia Wells in there a few times..
