Tofu for a cookout??

I second the grilled polenta! This is great on the grill!

Good food near IMAX theater on Mound rd. in Sterling Heights? [DTW]

Oh, we just ended up at our local pizza joint, since I hadn't made a decision early enough. But I had found Tivoli's on my own and if we're out that way again that will be our choice! We are always at our local Rangoli and we love it (they all know us there) so we weren't that excited by that prospect. We did try La Saj last summer on your recommendation! I guess I forgot it was in SH.

It doesn't even have to be that close. We are vegetarian. Am thinking maybe good middle eastern or Italian? OH, and it's for TONIGHT, as usual with me!

Thanks!

DTW - Cheng's, Rochester Hills

Wow!! Thanks for the review! I want to check it out, too, but I am sure they'll stereotype me as well, and as a vegetarian probably even more so. I'll think it over.

Best quick cupcake recipe?

Excellent, I will bookmark for next time! I ended up making some carrot cake cupcakes from smitten kitchen, which were great!

Best quick cupcake recipe?

Oh I have that book and I love her! thanks!

Best quick cupcake recipe?

Hi everyone, I need a really great cupcake recipe I can whip up tomorrow afternoon. I have two kinds already (German chocolate and a not-very-good coconut variety that I'm not proud of) , but I think I need something without coconut and without nuts. Also preferably not chocolate, in case someone doesn't like any of those three things!

Any thoughts? Thanks!

What are your favourite taco fillings?

I would like to hear more about the vegetarian barbacoa!

Foods you dread making because they’re time-consuming

Me too! Or the Moth!

Foods you dread making because they’re time-consuming

I love the thought of this especially on the grill!!!

Showing off really good Cardamom

oh yeah, cardamom milkshake--I made one of those over the holidays, but not this one--i got confused and thought this was it at first. The one I made was coconut cardamom:

It was truly outstanding. I added some cocoa nibs for texture and fun.

CSAs near Rochester MI ? [dtw]

Yeah, my only complaint about last year's was that there were a LOT of beets every week. I don't like beets. But, there were lots and lots of other good things too. I hope I can find one. I will look into Maple Creek.

CSAs near Rochester MI ? [dtw]

Last year, we had a great CSA at the Rochester Farmers' Market. But, they aren't going to participate this year. Anyone have any good personal experience with a local CSA? I don't want to drive too far, but am desperate, so I'll entertain all possibilities at this point!

Prepared Food at Farmers Markets [DTW & metro]

can't wait!!! Give thanks and home bakeries are both walking distance, so I wish GH would go away. But in general, I love the market.

Prepared Food at Farmers Markets [DTW & metro]

The Rochester farmers' market has few prepared foods, mostly produce and fresh eggs. They do have a great harvest bread co. stand, which shouldn't be allowed IMO since it's a chain, but it's pretty legit.

Recipe for Vegan Ice cream

Awesome! A way to use my ice cream maker this summer!

Vegans: What do you eat when you're hungover?

Oh yeah, for sure tempeh reuben. The best! Apartment therapy has a great recipe.

Vegans: What do you eat when you're hungover?

Definitely hash browns with tons of garlic and oil and cayenne! Even better made with sweet potatoes.

Emme has the right idea!

Vegan/Vegetarians: What to eat when feeling under the weather???

Stomach: a nice salty egg-drop soup, or vegetable broth and rice
Cold: very spicy soup of some kind (either african peanut soup made with veg stock, or a very spicy thai curry soup)
Agree that something like lentils is not good for a touchy stomach, but could still work for a cold.

Homemade Stock

I usually use the method outlined here:
http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Smashed-Potatoes-with-Roasted-Garlic-Gravy-350612

I just stop before the gravy step. (The gravy's amazing though!)

So, what IS the best Middle Eastern in Dearborn? [DTW]

I always thought it was La Pita, but then I read some questionable stuff on this board, I guess after a change in location.

Are there other better options? Or do people still believe in La Pita? Do tell!

Thanks!

What to bring to birthing class last night?

That sounds great!

Impromptu Meals - how do I plan for them?

Canned tomatoes also make a great salsa with canned green chiles and/or chipotles in adobo, , garlic, white onion, jalapeno (jarred or fresh), and cilantro if you have it.

Impromptu Meals - how do I plan for them?

I do this with salad fixings as well. And greens, if properly stored ,can last a week. I would also look into kale, which keeps amazingly well, far better than regular lettuces.

what to do with evaporated milk

Great thread! I can't use heavy cream in my house for various reasons, so it's good to see all the possible ways of replacing it with evaporated milk!

Cobwebs inside SEALED package???

That is disgusting!!! YUCK! I had a problem once with corn i bought to feed squirrels. I was a clueless new homeowner, and tossed this bag of corn cobs into the entry way closet. Within a week I had moths everywhere and nearly went insane trying to find the source.

I did not know they liked chocolate... I have goosebumps!

Guacamole - Why am I still alive?

(BTW, I'm aware that no one likes to have food poisoning... but I have a particular hatred worse than most people I know, and I'm very careful to use things up quickly as a result!)

Guacamole - Why am I still alive?

I hate having stomach-related illnesses and I would never have taken the chance. I am also, as others stated, amazed that it was not brown. Very strange.

Guacamole - Bitter!?

ITA. I use only lime, salt, and avocado. I don't even use onion or cilantro, although I like those things. I jsut find that they detract from the essentials.
