Boston hound in SD, looking for fish tacos and sit-down Mexican
Are you going to the NAPO Conference by any chance? This NYC hound posted a similar request! May we can connect?
Need BIG country-style breakfast in NYC (other than Clinton St Bakery)
Go to the uptown branch of Clinton St - Community Food & Juice. Much shorter lines - get there at 10 or so - or go on a weekday - and you won't have to wait long.

Lunch deals
Jean-Georges Nougatine. Lovely food, light airy space. Fanatastic deal (tho if you are a big eater you may find the portions on the small side - were perfect for me). Would have been worth the $$ just for the perfect warm shrimp salad.

One day - 2 meals - in San Diego
Hi SD Hounds,
I'll be in town for a conference (the National Association of Professional Organizers) and have a half-day freee before it begins.
Would love recommendations for lunch and dinner - and some sight-seeing ideas (I think I'll skip the Zoo - is that heretical?)
I'm staying at the Town & County Resort - don't have a car but they say they are on the trolley line.
No particular requirements - just looking for great food that's convenient to sites. Not looking to spend top dollar.
Thanks!
Lisa
Dinner near 30th St Station for 2 New Yorkers
Forgot to mention - we also asked for a side of onion rings - saw them with the ribeye and couldn't resist. Perfection! Service was also really great - helpful, nice, professional. A correction - we had the bourbon beignets, not the maple dessert. I could have that bourbon butterscotch sauce every day!

Thanks Philly friends!
We had a great deal at JG Domestic. The popcorn was a disappointment - soggy, nothing special, but everything else was wonderful - loved the rolls in cast iron skillet; flatbread was perfect; pumkin croquettes were yummy; got comped the crosnes which were a huge hit - one of our favorites, lamb chops were good but I wouldn't recommend them; had the special fish - forget what it was, but it was great. And the chocolate and maple desserts were a fabulous ending to a great meal.

We can cab it. Would like to keep it under $50/person without drinks. Will check out JG - thanks!!

Hi Philly Hounds!
A friend and I are coming down to see the Barnes collection before it is uprooted.
Would love some recommendations for dinner Sat. night near the 30th St. Station - something not too pricey but great food.
Thanks for your help!

Shelter Island - Two Eds? Commander Cody's?
Hoping for a quick Chowhound response on these 2 places for dinner tonight! People here have been mentioning Two Eds, but we peeked in the window, and the drab carpeting and cafeteria chairs are a downer. Is this more of an eat-outside-in-the-summer place? I don't mind casual, but this seemed like an American Legion hall rec room, which doesn't bring to mind good food!
Stopped by Commander Cody's to sample the baked goods (after meeting the daughter who bakes them last night) - amazing red velvet whoopie pie with marshmallow cream cheese filling. Was wondering what the dinner is like. Is the fried chicken really all that, as a review posted there said? How about the fish and the ribs?
Thanks!
Lisa

Gus's Pecans/Davis Mountain Nut Company - Fort Davis
Hmm, sorry to hear it. All the varieties I had were a mix of sweet and spicy - sort of layered flavors. And you could definitely tell it was a fresh pecan in there.
Gus's Pecans/Davis Mountain Nut Company - Fort Davis
The guy at the handmade broom place on route 17 just south of the fort recommended that I check out the candied pecans across the street at the Davis Mountain Nut Company. Glad he did!
I'd seen a huge pecan grove on my drive from El Paso to Marfa, and had read that the pecan was Texas's state tree, so I already had pecans on my mind when I saw the place.
Gus makes 7 yummy flavors of pecans - a great treat if you're in the area. Orange Twang and Sweet & Spicy were 2 of my favorites. Am looking at the brochure now - wish I'd noticed the fudge!
Everything was homey and authentic-seeming. I even got a recommendation on a seldom-open local restaurant - Poco Mexico, on 17, north of the "Y" in the road north of the fort, on the left side of the road, open 11:30 - 3:30 Thurs - Sun. I'll plan my next visit around those times.
This is the kind of place Chowhounders should support!
Not in the area? He's online - www.allpecans.com
DINNER NEAR THE JOYCE THEATER???? CASUAL???
Their branzino is really good - a frequent special. I was searching this board to find an alternative to Le Zie when I go to the Joyce tomorrow, but I will probably just go back to this old favorite. I usually get the spaghetti and meatballs - nothing special, but perfect! 1" meatballs - much better than the softballs so many places serve.

Hot Date Suggestion - Downtown
While I think the Red Cat is nice, I wouldn't say anything about the ambiance gives a "hot date" vibe.

The Meatball Shop - recommendations?
Heading there tomorrow - picks and pans appreciated.
Birthday dinner for 10 year old boy
Serendipity. Just go early and be prepared to wait. Channel your inner kid and get the foot-long hot dog. Forget dinner and just have sundaes and frozen hot chocolate. I think Mars and Chinese food if he likes that are good ideas too My advice would be to think of it as a kid's bday party - think fun ambiance and experience, don't try for food the adults will really enjoy. I will never forget childhood bday meals at places like Ma Bell's (I seem to recall sitting in a 1920's car and talking on an old fashioned telephone), Jahn's ice cream shop on Long Island with the giant kitchen sink sundae, and Serendipity. Or, if you really want a nice meal, do that, but take him to the ferris wheel at Toys R Us afterwards and give him $25 to spend at the Hershey's store.
Driving from Manhattan to Beacon - where to eat?
Thanks for the suggestions! A burger and Jane's ice cream sounds like it will hit the spot!
First Time at Norma's
Try Clinton St's uptown branch with a dumb name - Community Food & Juice. On Broadway near Columbia. Same food, bigger place, shorter lines. Even with the hike uptown, you'll probably save time. They're known for the pancakes, but try the french toast too. Excellent bacon. Their oatmeal is really good too!
Great Coffee Near Columbia
I like Oren's up there.
It's outside of your range, but I'm a big fan of the $1.50 cafe con leche at El Malecon on Amsterdam between 97th and 98th.
Driving from Manhattan to Beacon - where to eat?
Would love suggestions on where to eat in Beacon - or along the way.
Any cuisine, from casual to "fancy", but not super expensive.
Thanks!
Hosting a small dinner the night before the wedding on UWS
I second Ouest, Dovetail and Telepan, tho Dovetail and Telepan might feel a little too sedate. Compass is nice too - underrated in my book. You might also check out Landmarc in the Time Warner building.
If you can get a round booth at Oeust, that is great for conversation.
Someone recommended Kefi - I don't think that will be special enough. Calle Ocho is very noisy.

Angelina Pizzabar on Bway - anyone?
Has anyone tried this place? This is the UWS, so I'm not expecting much, but is it worth a shot?
Thanks!
Early Evening 40th Bday with 2 little ones- UWS Chinese- is it all awful?
Agree to all - how about Saigon Grill for Vietnamese instead? Amsterdam & 90th.

Hungry male seeks to eat the face off Manhattan for less than $10-15/meal
Don't miss the potato pizza at Grandaisy Bakery! http://www.grandaisybakery.com/ A great between-meal snack!
Cafe at Country for Sunday Brunch?
Sorry if this has been asked - searching for these terms wasn't helpful.
Would love thoughts on going here for a birthday brunch with a group of 7. Looking for pleasant atmosphere as well as good food (it's brunch - food doesn't have to be spectacular. Sticking to American or French). Couldn't get a rez at Cookshop.
Thanks for any feedback!
P.S. Kathryn's brunch bible is an awesome reference!
Clam shack in Point Lookout?
Thanks - you comments were all right on. We did end up at Point Lookout - there was no line, which helped. Most stuff was just okay, but I thought the Manhattan Clam Chowder was really great and worth going for. Next time, Jordans or Bigelows.
Clam shack in Point Lookout?
Hi,
Does anyone have the address - and opinions - on a crab/clam/etc -type shack in Point Lookout?
Any opinions on The Crab Shack in Freeport?
Or a better place to eat on the way back to the City from Jones Beach?
Thanks!

AZ Foodies in Vancouver
Thanks for this post and the replies - 2 New Yorkers will be in Vancouver the 4-6 and thanks to this board we've made a reservation at Gastropod for Friday and plan to hit the izakayas on Saturday.
West was another choice for Friday dinner. Any last-minute contrary votes on Gastropod?
Any lunch recommendations? Or breakfast in our neighborhood? We're staying at the Inn at False Creek, opposite Granville Island.
Thanks!
Lisa
