Pann's

Panns has fallen off. They are riding the reputation by increasing prices and lowering food quality. They dont seem to care about their biscuits anymore - they used to be great. Chicken is still good, but thats it. I would much rather go to Roscoes. Standard LA diner with a couple of good items, but less each day.

ISO of dinner in south LA or north OC area

Michaels in the Naples section of Long Beach. Great Italian. Good reviews ares spot on. (cant link)

El Pollo Imperial off the 91 at Atlantic - best rotisserie chicken in town, good Peruvian food.
Some good Korean BBQ in Haw. Garden/Cerritos area. Youll have to explore
Benley's in N. Long Beach - Nice sit down VN kitchen that is very consistent.
Enriques in Long Beach - Great Mexican - see reviews.

Seared foie gras in Los Angeles?

I was just about to say that.... best i've had. Next would be Animal, next would actually be Frenchy's Bistro in Long Beach. Nice portion, perfectly cooked over Brioche and some jam..

FUN IN LONG BEACH?

Interesting, Yes, Shopping, NO.... unless you need a Money order or fishing lures. Joe Josts is a long beach legend. On Anaheim near Orange, the neighborhood could be better but it is a classic beer bar. Been there for almost 100 years, Joes serves cold beer and pretty much only 2 things.. Pickled eggs and the "special" (a polish sausage sandwich) Get both and a bag of peanuts they roast on site, with a beer and life is good.

If almost everybody in there looks like they've been there since they were kids, its because they have been coming there since they were kids. RIP PBR on draft.

Best Breakfast Burritos

Sorry, The Pines - Probably the only remaining good food option south of M - is now closed. It is now the Habanero Grill. It is a taco and burrito grill top. Food is OK, but pretty run-of-the-mill Mexican for the LA Area.

Breakfast between Long Beach Airport and San Pedro?

I love Gaffey Diner for the food, but it is not exactly the beach type environment you may want. It is downtown Pedro.

If you want more of a beach scene, I would recommend Schooner or Later in the Alamitos Marina, serving big, good portions to a big crowd. Dont let the lines get you down, they go quick. Try "the Mess"

Also good beach breakfast is Chucks Coffee Shop on Ocean near the Belmont Pool. Try "the Weasel".

Both have good access to cruise dock. Just take Ocean over the bridges.

Michael's on Naples in Long Beach?

Been there about a dozen times. Never a bad meal. Prix Fixe with wine pairings very good, but need to work on wine knowledge. Ive had a few standout dishes here (squid ink pasta, filet with crostini) that are as good as any Italian i've had. Bugs seem to be worked out and Michaels is hitting its stride. Much recommended. Possibly (along with Frenchy's) the last good fine dining in Long Beach. RIP Trachts.

Porky's in Long Beach

I have not had Muggies fried chicken, but it did replace the Golden Bird chicken they used to serve. As a fan of the IWood Porky's I am sad to say that the long beach branch is sad. I keep trying it hoping they will catch on, but every time the food has been terrible.

Last time was a rib and pulled pork combo. The forgot the pulled pork, the ribs were cold in the middle, the pot. salad was like mashed potatoes. All for 20 bucks. Total absolute rip off.

Never again

Looking in Long Beach

A classic bar, not too fancy, LB landmark. Joe Josts on Anaheim. Bar food. Dont be shocked if everybody is eating pickled eggs, try one, trust me.

Sophy's is nearby on PCH and Redondo (new location) Thai/cambodian done well. Bentlys on Wardlow is good Vietnamese.

Best Mexican...

Babita has a great Menu, a clean, nice setting and a really good family run atmosphere... La Casita is similar, both are mentioned below and are great choices.

I would also throw out Enriques in Long Beach for another low key, but a nice sit down option.. anything they do with pork is usually really good..see pork shank in tomatillo sauce.

Also for the best fish tacos around see Taco Baja Ensenada..

Long Beach..by Aquarium Of The Pacific

kings is good, with a great oyster menu and some good fresh fish... a bit better than yard house.

It is actually really nice out today... the patio at Trachts at the Renissance hotel a few blocks away would be a good hit. 555 has good steaks and is close.. for a bar/grill Smooths is passable.

other than the usual chains (CPK, Bubba Gumps,etc..) you have to go to either Pine Ave. or 2nd street in Belmont shore. If you search either on this site you will see lots of discussion.

Best restaurant in Long Beach

For higher end I like some of the above reccs...Cafe Gazelle may want you out, tiny place that needs a turnover to survive - Sophy's is not exactly high end, but very good - same with Koi.

Tract's is especially good in Fall (or whatever we call this here) the patio is fantastic. I hope their green staff have gotten some seasoning.

Im a frenchy's fan - especially if your there for awhile, the room is big and they dont seem to care. Service is fantastic and meals are always solid.

Only 1 try at Michaels so far and it was fantastic. Tasting menu with wine pairings was (at times) spectacular - see seafood and squid ink pasta or filet with crostini. Too bad service was sloppy and inexperienced. I hope they will catch on, the food deserves it. Be warned that I have seen contrary reviews here, the food may be inconsistent.

If its wine and some appetizers your after, or fondue, I like the Back Room at Morry's of Naples. Great wine, decent cheese and other fillers, and about as good a room as you can get without windows. Good place for a gathering.

I would also add Open Sesame on 2nd - very good Persian/Medi food, Cristy's on Broadway is a Christy Bono restaurant that has consistently good italian in a nice room and they won't rush you.

Long Beach area......what restaurants are the must go to?

I have to mention Joe Josts.

We don't have many "institutions" in Long Beach, but Joes is one. Beer on tap, and only beer. Pickled Eggs and a "Special" (polish sausage sand). Its an old, classic bar in a blue collar, family oriented beer pub.

Long Beach area......what restaurants are the must go to?

Agree with below rave review on Michaels. I posted a few weeks ago. Chefs menu was very well done. Wine pairings were spot-on. Will not only return but frequent. Two of the dishes - a squid ink pasta with clams, and a sirloin strip with crostini were LA standouts.

Big marks down on service, I had to explain to the waitress what a wine pairing was...she finally summoned the manager who knew the deal. Two dishes were not slow, but served almost-warm.

I hope the service improves soon. Michaels will be a great addition LB>

Agreed on Sushi of Naples, total train wreck.

2 solid additions to Naples, Long Beach

Naples is a nice area for walking, parking isn't bad and people are fairly laid back. For some reason they can't keep a good restaurant. Two editions show promise.

Morry's of Naples has been there forever. Its actually a wine shop with fair prices that recently opened a wine bar ("the Backroom") with some extra space. I have yet to try any of the food but the cheese, meat and bread selection looks like it would be fine for a dinner. Only ding is that the bar is literally the back room, seems a shame to not have a view.

Morry's wines are a standout with domestic and foreign selections at very good prices. Last time I had a couple of glasses under $4 that were superb. Wife had a mixed trio of wine samplers for $9 that was very solid. Wine menu changes but has always been consistent. Staff knew their wines and service was good.

The other mention is Michael's on Naples (the old Baccus Rooftop dining place). Only one visit, but we will be back. Made it through the 6 course chef's menu and enjoyed all of it. Just a few minor problems (service) but a couple standouts - pasta dish was a squid ink pasta with clams was perfect, beef filet with salad and crostini was also very good. Im sure it will take a few visits to go through the full menu, but just reading it showed some promise. 6 course meal with pairings $100 pp.

Huntington Beach Area Suggestions

Keeping the 15 y/o in mind:

I had some pretty good BBQ at Smokin Mo's some time ago. Good ribs and pulled pork. Close to water and Main St. walking

I have been going to Zubies Dry Dock for years. Good seafood and very casual.

Looking for a Great Dinner spot in Long Beach

I m surprised nobody has mentioned Trachts. It is in the Renaissance Hotel downtown.

Ive been 4 or 5 times and have had excellent meals. I think the ambiance part comes from the fairly cool decor or that they have a great patio facing Ocean Bl.

Above are some very good reccs. I really like Cafe Gazelle and Frenchy's

We also like Christy's on Broadway. It has a great menu and a mellow vibe.

I would say all of the above have great, consistent food with a good ambiance.

Long Beach, CA area

I'm not in College, Im old and have money - but I still do lots of shopping down Anaheim Bl. to one of the many asian markets that stretch from Redondo to the 710.

The food has some of the best prices in Los Angeles. If you can eat,and cook asian foods it is a regular staple that will save you LOTs of money. I will not make any reccomendations. Some are big markets that have everything, some specialize in Thai, Cambodian or Chinese and tailor their products to suit - you choose.

Pulled Pork in OC / Long Beach

Long Beach doesn't have the BBQ that it should... Other than those mentioned (which are all good) Dominguez is not far from Long Beach - Jaybees ribs is the real deal.

Also Porky's is opening a branch in long beach at 937 Redondo Ave, yes the same Porky's as Inglewood fame. It looks done, but im not sure if they are up and running yet. Its a small stand, they will be probably to minimal cooking there, but bring it in from Inglewood.

Celebration Dinner in Long Beach

I would look at any of the 3 Christy Bono restaurants - Christy's, Bono's and Nico's. I'm not sure of ownership currently, but I keep going to Christy's on Broadway and love the food, Bono's as well. Great seafood and usually at least i veggie option. Christy's would be my pick for a party - more low key and intimate than the others.
